In the second quarter of the Minnesota Vikings’ Week 2 contest against the Pittsburgh Steelers, punt returner Marcus Sherels etched his name into the purple record book once again.
With a 12-yard return, Sherels passes Leo Lewis to become the Vikings’ all-time leader in punt return yardage. Sherels entered today’s game trailing Lewis by just two yards, and now has the mark with 1,822 career yards.
Sherels already has the team record for most punt return touchdowns in team history with five, and now has the yardage record as well. Sherels set the record while returning 21 fewer punts than Lewis did. He could very well be the best punt returner the franchise has ever had. Not bad for a local guy that fought his way up from the practice squad to become a significant contributor.
Congratulations to Marcus Sherels for setting the Vikings’ all-time record for punt return yardage with 1,822 yards.
