By the Numbers: Offensive Coordinator

With the official start of the 2017 NFL season upon us (finally), we're also met with the end of the Daily Norseman series "By the Numbers." Front page writer Christopher Gates started this voyage 100 days ago and led us through the finer (and not so fine) moments in Vikings history by chronicling the players who have worn each jersey number for the team (1-99). It was an informative and entertaining trip down memory lane. The entertaining part often came through participation in a fan poll in which we the fans, got to decide 'who wore the number best' in Vikings history.

That was 3 months of Vikings history that I think we all enjoyed; and now that it's over I got to thinking: perhaps there are a few more "numbers" that are worth discussing. With that, I decided to do a little digging and find out just who have been some of the most number producing coaches in Vikings history. The obvious number associated with coaches is number of wins. But I thought why not expand this exercise to include coordinators. So here is my attempt to keep the "By the Numbers" series alive for just a few more days. Here are some of the more impressive offensive numbers, and the coordinator who orchestrated said numbers, in Vikings team history:

Most points scored in a season: 556 points, OC-Brian Billick, 1998 (was a league record until 2007).

Most pass attempts per game: 44.31, OC-Jerry Burns, 1981 (was a league record until 2012).

Most TDs receiving by a duo: 29 (R. Moss, C. Carter), OC-Brian Billick, 1998.

Most receiving TDs in a season, individual: 17 (Moss 1998, 2003/C. Carter 1995), OCs-Billick (95, 98), Linehan (2003).

Most rushing yards in a season , individual: 2,097 (A. Peterson), OC- Bill Musgrave, 2012.

Most rushing TDs in a season, individual: 18 (A. Peterson), OC-Darrell Bevell, 2009.

Most rushing yards in a single game: 296 (A. Peterson) OC-Darrell Bevell. NFL record.

Fewest Penalties, 14-Game Season: 36 Minnesota Vikings, 1961

Well there you have it. Some of the greatest offensive achievements in Minnesota Vikings history. Some of the team statistics were a little difficult to come by, therefore I had to substitute them for individual records.

Hat tip to Vikingsmania.com for several of the records. I also used wikipedia and Pro Football Reference as sources for the information.
