Over the past few days, we’ve mentioned the four interviews that Minnesota Vikings’ offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur has lined up for head coaching vacancies around the National Football League. Now, one of the teams that will be interviewing Shurmur has asked permission to interview his counterpart on the other side of the ball.
Per Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the Chicago Bears have asked for permission to interview Vikings’ Defensive Coordinator George Edwards.
Edwards has been the Vikings’ defensive coordinator since Mike Zimmer became the head coach in 2014. While the defense is generally considered around the league to be Zimmer’s “baby,” Edwards has played a big role in game planning on that side of the ball, and after four years would pretty much have to know the scheme like the back of his hand.
While Edwards hasn’t gotten nearly the head coach steam that Shurmur has, he apparently impressed a lot of folks when he served as one of the head coaches for the East-West game after last season. He was also on a list of recommended candidates for head coaching vacancies that was released by the National Football League a few weeks ago.
There haven’t been any other teams that have reached out to the Vikings for permission to talk to Edwards yet, but if there are we will pass that news along to you here.
