After the Minnesota Vikings’ surprise claiming of former Detroit Lions’ running back Ameer Abdullah on Wednesday, they had to make a corresponding roster move to get him on the 53-man roster. To do so, they bid adieu to another running back.

The announcement came down a little bit ago that the Vikings have waived running back Roc Thomas to make room for Abdullah.

Thomas was one of the big stars of the preseason for the Vikings, as he had a huge performance in the preseason opener against the Denver Broncos. Even though it was thought that he was in a battle for the #3 running back spot with fellow undrafted rookie Mike Boone, both of them made the team out of Training Camp. During the season, however, Boone appeared to be the choice over Thomas with Dalvin Cook on the sideline, and that became more apparent today with Thomas’ release.

On the season, Thomas had eight carries for 30 yards, and caught two passes for 21 yards. He suffered a hamstring injury in the Week 8 loss to the New Orleans Saints and was inactive for the Week 9 victory over the Detroit Lions. Despite that, Thomas was not waived with any sort of injury designation, so if no team claims him in the next 24 hours, he will become a free agent rather than reverting to the Vikings’ injured reserve list.

Roc Thomas out, Ameer Abdullah in. What are your thoughts, ladies and gentlemen?
