Report: Vikings reach out to Drew Brees

Well, the Saints STILL haven’t signed him.

NFL: NFC Divisional Playoff-New Orleans Saints at Minnesota Vikings Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

That’s crazy! That’s preposterous! That’s insane!

Granted, it probably still is. . .but at least the Minnesota Vikings are giving it a shot.

Numerous sources across these vast interwebs of ours are reporting that, with the “legal tampering” period well underway in the National Football League, our favorite football team has touched base with the agent for New Orleans Saints’ quarterback Drew Brees.

Brees will now, barring a deal with the Saints in the next couple of days, hit unrestricted free agency at 3:00 PM Central time when the new league year begins. Brees has been the Saints’ quarterback since 2006, when he left the San Diego Chargers in free agency.

I have no idea why the Saints haven’t worked anything out with Brees already. Perhaps they thought it was an open-and-shut deal. Perhaps they’ve lowballed him a bit with their offers and he’s a bit insulted. Maybe, as Adam Patrick of The Viking Age suggests, the Saints are waiting for Kirk Cousins to sign with somebody so they can ensure that Brees gets more.

All we know right now is that Brees, like every other impending free agent, is free to have his agent field calls from any of the other 31 teams in the National Football League. It appears that, in an effort to at least do their due diligence, Rick Spielman and company have taken advantage of that opportunity.

I still think the odds of Brees coming to Minnesota are incredibly remote, but at least the purple are making an inquiry.
