While much of our discussion of free agency for the Minnesota Vikings has centered around quarterbacks, one of our division rivals has made a move to upgrade themselves significantly at the wide receiver position.
Numerous sources on social media are reporting that wide receiver Allen Robinson intends to sign with the Chicago Bears when free agency starts on Wednesday.
Robinson was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft, and had a big breakout season in his second year in the league, catching 80 passes for 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns. His numbers tailed off a bit in 2016, and this past season he had just one reception before suffering a torn ACL in the Jaguars’ first game of the year and missing the remainder of the season.
The wide receiving corps for the Bears last year was. . .well, let’s call it “lacking.” Their leading receiver was Kendall Wright, who had 59 receptions for 614 yards. The 6’3”, 210-pound Robinson should provide a significant upgrade and a reliable target for Mitchell Trubisky, provided that he’s truly all the way back from his knee injury. Robinson will also provide a significant test for Xavier Rhodes twice a year, to be certain.
The move won’t become official until the new league year begins on Wednesday at 3:00 PM Central time, but one NFC North squad has apparently started their upgrades already.
