Only five more days, ladies and gentlemen. That’s when all of the mock drafts and the rumors and innuendo associated with the 2018 NFL Draft will come to an end and we’ll finally get to meet some new members of the Minnesota Vikings. For now, however, we’re taking a look back at some past drafts and determining who the greatest pick that the Vikings have made in each round of the selection process.
Once again, using our database of every draft choice the Minnesota Vikings have ever made, we’ve found a few names that qualify as solid fifth round selections, and we’ll leave it up to you folks to determine the best one. We’ve gone over the sixth round and the seventh round already, so let’s launch into Round 5.
Stefon Diggs, WR, Maryland - It might seem a little. . .or a lot. . .early to put Diggs on this list, but he’s quickly developed into a top-notch receiver for the Vikings after being selected in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Plus he was part of the Minneapolis Miracle, so that’s got to be good for something, right?
Hassan Jones, WR, Florida State - Jones was selected by the Vikings in the fifth round of the 1986 NFL Draft, and was a very solid receiving option for the team for a number of years. He was never really considered the Vikings #1 receiver, as he was more often than not overshadowed by Anthony Carter, but he did do enough to put himself into eighth place on the Vikings’ all-time receiving yardage list with 3,733 yards.
Ed McDaniel, LB, Clemson - McDaniel was the Vikings’ fifth-round selection in 1992, and went on to be one of the more underrated linebackers in team history. He spent his entire nine-year NFL career with the Vikings, and from 1994 to 2001 started 108 of 112 games for the team at middle linebacker. He earned a Pro Bowl berth in 1998 as well.
Ed Sharockman, CB, Pittsburgh - Sharockman was the first fifth-round pick the Minnesota Vikings ever made, as he was a part of the team’s inaugural draft class in 1961. Sharockman started 125 out of 142 career games for the Vikings, and during his time as a member of the Vikings racked up 40 interceptions. That number is third in team history in that category behind Paul Krause (53) and Bobby Bryant (51).
Tomorrow, we’ll be on to the fourth round of historical Vikings’ draft choices.
