On Sunday, the man that might be the most well-known fan of the Minnesota Vikings as things stand right now finally reached the pinnacle of achievement in his sport.
Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, or “Thor,” as he’s more commonly known, took home first place in the 2018 World’s Strongest Man competition that was held in the Philippines.
Prior to today’s competition, much like the Vikings, Björnsson had come close to the title on numerous occasions. In the six competitions prior to this one, he had finished in second place three times (including each of the past two years) and in third place three times.
Björnsson is best-known for his role as “The Mountain” in the hit HBO television series Game of Thrones, but has made his fan allegiance to the Vikings known on several occasions, including sounding the Gjallarhorn at U.S. Bank Stadium this past October before the Vikings’ victory over the Green Bay Packers.
It’s good to see the big man bring home the championship. Who knows? Perhaps in 2018 the Vikings. . .who know a thing or two about being the runner-up. . .will follow his lead and finally get to the top of the mountain themselves.
Once again, congratulations to Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson on winning the 2018 World’s Strongest Man competition!
