Tidbits from today’s Minnesota Vikings Mini Camp session

There were a couple of newsworthy items in there

Today in Eagan, the Minnesota Vikings started their three-day mandatory Mini Camp, the last time the team will be together before the start of Training Camp in late July. There hasn’t been anything earth-shattering thus far where news is concerned, but there have been a couple of newsworthy nuggets that we can pass along.

Jalyn Holmes, the Vikings’ fourth round pick in April’s NFL Draft, is sitting out of this week’s Mini Camp, as you can see from Andrew Krammer’s tweet above. Holmes, who played defensive end for THE. . .dramatic pause. . .Ohio State University, will apparently be attempting to crack the Vikings’ defensive line rotation at defensive tackle.

Numerous sources are reporting that Terence Newman saw some time at safety in today’s session. We’ve seen Newman play safety for the Vikings before, as he even got a start at that spot in 2015 in a game that Harrison Smith missed due to injury. I’m not sure how many snaps Newman is going to see in the Vikings’ secondary this season, but the Vikings obviously have confidence that he can play pretty much anywhere they ask him to when they call upon him.

Head coach Mike Zimmer appears to think pretty highly of second-year guard Danny Isidora. With Pat Elflein still on the sideline and Nick Easton playing center in his place, Isidora is getting the reps at left guard this week, or at least he did today. Depending on which stories you believe to this point in the offseason, the Vikings have at least one spot on the offensive line that’s undecided, and they may have more. If Isidora can acquit himself well this preseason, he could certainly be a challenger for a starting spot. At the very least, he should be able to provide some quality depth.

Those are some of the quick hits from the first day of the Vikings’ mandatory Mini Camp for this week. As more news trickles out of the sessions over the next couple of days, we’ll have it for you here.
