Merry Tuesday, everyone!
It’s another fine summer day, and there is some actual football news to share. This time of year is exciting, because football is getting closer, but that also means that summer is nearly over, so the emotions can be conflicting. In the end, regardless of your feelings on summer’s exit, football will arrive, and it will be here before we know it. Get ready, it’s gonna be a fun year.
Around the DN since our last open thread:
Johnny Stanton is no stranger to dealing with change, per Eric. The Vikings fullback was once a quarterback. I wonder if he’s actually Christian Ponder in disguise?
Coach Sparano’s passing was tragic, but not the first tragedy to strike Vikings training camp, per Ted.
Zim Tzu is out of hibernation! So is Ted!
Chris asks “Where were you during the Minneapolis Miracle?”.
Breaking T has some custom t-shirts to commemorate Randy Moss’ induction into the Pro Football Hall Of Fame.
Vikings news from other sources and news from around the league:
At the Star Tribune, Jerome Felton is back with the team, but as a scouting intern instead of as a player. I always liked Felton, and I think he contributed more than many think to the success of our running game while he was here. It’s just a little blurb on the page where that link takes you, so I’ll just quote the paragraph.
Former Vikings Pro Bowl fullback Jerome Felton — or what is left of him — was spotted on the sideline Sunday. It was his first day as a scouting intern with the Vikings. Felton played nine seasons with five teams from 2008 to 2016. He was with the Vikings from 2012 to 2014. In 2012, he was the lead blocker for Adrian Peterson, who rushed for 2,097 yards while winning league MVP that season. No longer fullback-sized, Felton looks great and is much trimmer than his listed playing weight of 246.
At Vikings.com, see Cousins and the offense humming during 7-on-7s. watch Dalvin Cook address the media, catch Coach Zimmer’s press conference, and there’s lots more to look through in the media vault.
From CBS Sports, Richard Sherman got torched at 49ers training camp. I wonder if they’re supposed to fire Rick now?
Sam Darnold finally signed his rookie deal with the Jets, per NFL.com.
NFL.com has their early winners and losers (way too early, IMO) from training camps across the league.
We come to today’s media selection:
Pondering the end of summer made me think of this song. I’m not a huge fan of Don Henley (I’m more of a Joe Walsh guy), but this is a pretty good one.
Again, we all know the rules, but in case someone is new:
- No discussion of politics or religion
- No feeding of the trolls
- This isn’t a male version of The View, so leave the gender hatred at the door
- Keep the bad language to a minimum (using the spoiler tags, if you must
- Speaking of which, if discussing a newer show or movie, please use spoiler tags

- While navigating the open thread, just assume anything you read is sarcasm
With that, the beer light is on and the bar is open. Belly up & tie one on. Don’t forget to tip your waitress, & try the pickled northern
