Vikings Roster Cuts: Minnesota Vikings release Trevon Mathis

Not a surprise cut from a loaded defensive backfield

NFL: Seattle Seahawks at Minnesota Vikings Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports

The most talented group of players on the Minnesota Vikings roster might be their defensive backfield. One of the players that was part of the first wave of cuts for the purple felt the squeeze at that position today.

Trevon Mathis, a cornerback who signed with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent out of Toledo, was part of the team’s first round of cuts on Friday afternoon.

The expectations for Mathis, as for just about any other cornerback that the Vikings brought in, weren’t terribly high. He got beaten on a few passes and just generally didn’t do enough to make the squad. There’s a chance he could be brought back to be on the practice squad, but I would be surprised if it were to happen.

Stay with us at The Daily Norseman so that you can keep track of all of the players that the Vikings are releasing between now and Saturday’s 3:00 PM Central roster deadline.
