A Great Disturbance in the Norse

Earlier today, I felt a great disturbance in the Norse, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in shock, and then suddenly took to the blogs in masses to break the silence. Much debate ensued to determine whether something terrible has happened.

Then Rick Spielman came along and told us that we can forget our troubles with those free agent thugs, he outbid them. And then he noticed the confusion and bewilderment among the Vikings faithful, and felt floods of disdain in his direction.

Yes, I'm talking about the move to re-sign Anthony Barr. After we were all certain that he had his pen hovering over the dotted line to sign with the Jets the second that free agency "officially" started, he cleared his mind and chose to return to the purple side of the Norse for another 5-years. Terms of the decision are not yet finalized, but have been reported to be in the range of $65 million over 5-years, with undisclosed incentives that could push the final number to $75 million.

And now, Vikings fans can return to the grind of complaining about or praising the implications of the signing. Many of us might be inclined to be careful with our criticism, while others will howl in disgust at even hearing a differing opinion. We all need a gentle reminder every now and then that it was a fair move.

So now the debates must move on to the draft. Yes, the team is still short a number of starters, especially on the offensive line. But as tight as they are against the cap right now, it will require some serious Norse power to even be able to afford Barr at the moment. After all, free agents will pull the cash out of the team's pockets when they are owed their dues; rookies aren't known to do that. In that regard, the best strategy for the remainder of our starters just may be to let the rookies win.

So get those mock drafts ready, and update your needs accordingly. Remember that a Vikings mocker can feel the Norse flowing through him. It partially controls your actions, but it also obeys your commands. The results of your mocks may catch you off guard, but don't let that discourage you from learning to mock better. There are those who may ridicule the Norse, telling us that hokey mock drafts and ancient big boards are foolish when the real draft is months away.

But who cares if these are just simple mocks and nonsense? Let's just keep trying again and again, letting go of our conscious selves and acting on instinct. My latest mock started out with my eyes deceiving me, showing the most valuable player, Devin White, staring me down. Having just re-signed Barr though, I chose not to trust my eyes and selected DL Christian Wilkins instead.

My second pick came and I saw Lindstrom, still valued far below this selection, but I stretched out with my feelings and knew that he was great value here, so I made the OG my pick in the 2nd. Round 3 came around, and C Elgton Jenkins was the highest listed player, and I accepted what the Norse had brought to me, taking another lineman to solidify the group.

Pick 4 came around and the Browns made an offer I couldn't refuse.

Whoops! Sorry, wrong franchise. Anyways, the 30th pick in round 4 and the 6th pick in round 5 for the 18th pick in round 4 seemed like a no brainer. I took it and never looked back. With pick 4.30, Murray headed to Louisiana and Roc showing off his plant collection to the feds, RB Elijah Holyfield looked too good to pass up.

I then started out the 5th round with WR Miles Boykin, who compares well to Josh Doctson, and could be the deep threat #3 WR we have been waiting for.

The rest of my picks, I mostly shot for BPA.
6:17 LB David Long
6: 36 OT Oli Udoh
7:33 S Marquise Blair
7:36 TE Matt Sokol

Not the greatest mock, but at least it's a first step into a larger world.
