On this last day of June, we’re going to talk a bit about some futures betting odds concerning the Minnesota Vikings, specifically whether or not anyone on the roster is among the early favorites to end the 2019 NFL season as the league’s Most Valuable Player.
The short answer is. . .no.
Westgate Sportsbook in Las Vegas has put together their early odds on who will be named the 2019 NFL MVP, and you’ll find the expected names at the top of the list. The current favorite, unsurprisingly, is the current MVP, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He’s currently a 4/1 favorite. The top five is rounded out by more familiar names: Aaron Rodgers (8/1), Andrew Luck (8/1), Drew Brees (10/1), and. . .LOL. . .Carson Wentz (10/1).
In order to find any members of the Vikings, you’ve got to go down the list. Waaaaaaaaaaay down the list.
The first member of our favorite team that you’ll find is, not surprisingly, quarterback Kirk Cousins. The reason I say it’s not surprising is because quarterbacks are more often than not the favorites for this sort of thing. Cousins is listed at 80/1, the same odds as such players as Matthew Stafford, Jimmy Garoppolo, Alvin Kamara, and Saquon Barkley.
Three of Cousins’ primary weapons are listed as well, and they’re even longer shots than Cousins is. Running back Dalvin Cook and wide receiver Adam Thielen are both listed as 200/1 shots, while receiver Stefon Diggs is even further down the list at 300/1. The last non-quarterback to be named MVP by the Associated Press was Adrian Peterson back in 2012, and the AP has never named a wide receiver as their MVP, so those three guys would all have quite the uphill climb in order to grab the award.
There are several defensive players on Westgate’s list as well, but none of them are members of the Vikings.
Do you think anyone on the Vikings has a shot at being the NFL MVP in 2019?
