Funny, all that “we need to lose so we get a better draft pick” talk has disappeared (thankfully)

Merry hump day, everyone!

Hey, how ‘bout that defense? I hear lots of talk about how poorly the Bears offense played on Monday, but I think many are overlooking how well this Vikings defense has been playing. Although several of the presumed starters are out for the season, Coach Zimmer has figured something out, and he’s getting the most out of the personnel that he has. He has the defense disguising blitzes and coverage assignments, and in these past three games, opponents’ quarterbacks have been confused and uncomfortable when they drop back. After an abysmal start to the season, this defense is starting to play like the defenses we’ve become accustomed to seeing since Zimmer arrived. Say all you want about the Bears offense, but Monday wasn’t the first time that the Vikings defense shut an offense down this season, and with a relatively soft schedule for most of the remainder of the season, I won’t be surprised if they get even better.

I also have to give a big ‘attaboy’ to Kirk Cousins. He played a very good game on Monday against one of the better defenses in the league. He made no major mistakes (that interception was on Thielen, not Kirk), he sustained drives, and kept the offense on the field. He finished the game 25 of 36 for 292 yards and 2 touchdowns, but the biggest stat that jumps out to me is the time of possession. 35:50 for the good guys, and 24:10 for Chicago, and THAT helps the defense do what they did (here are the game stats, courtesy of ESPN). I wish the offense could have done a better job of putting the ball in the end zone, but they did enough, and the Vikings put another notch in the W column. After a 1-5 start, BOOM!, the Vikings are almost to .500. This is why you don’t give up after the first quarter of the season. SKOL!

At, Brian Baldinger looks at the film to show how the rookies helped make Monday happen, see a highlight reel of Cousins best throws and another with all of Jefferson’s catches on Monday, and there’s plenty more to look through in the media vault.

We come to today’s media selection:

Since technical difficulties kept me from posting yesterday, here’s our open thread tradition, only a day late. STRIKE UP THE BAND!!!!!!!

Again, we all know the rules, but in case someone is new:

With that, the beer light is on and the bar is open. Belly up & tie one on, don’t forget to tip your waitress (from a minimum of six feet away, of course), and try the head cheese.
