Friday Open Thread

Good Morning!

I saw mentions of a possible new collective bargaining agreement on the Twitters today. I’d like to see it approved because lockouts and replacement players suck yo, but one thing I’d like to see the players union push for is more money for the current and retired or past players. Today is everyone’s Friday expect me, it Monday yet again and I’m writing this after midnight. If I have time in the morning before work I’ll drop another 1st round mock with a player for consideration, if I don’t have time I’ll save it for the weekend thread. Meanwhile we’ll carry on with our news and links full of crockpot recipes, nap strategies and beer recommendations; drop by for some fan wisdom, snark and leave work early today, you worked hard all week and it’s almost time to put a brisket on the smoker.

Around the DN since our last open thread:

Report: NFL owners, players on the verge of a new labor agreement. It’s still not completely ratified, though notes Ted.

Ted ponders: Should I Stay or Should I Go? Looking at upcoming roster decisions on some key personnel: Linval Joseph in this edition.

Report: NFL Playoff field to expand to seven teams in 2020 via Chris.

Vikings news from other sources:

From Former Viking Ben Leber recently talked with NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero about the state of the Vikings heading into next week’s NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Topics including the addition of Dom Capers, the team’s salary cap situation, possible contract extensions for Kirk Cousins and Dalvin Cook, and much more.

Dom Capers, Vikings Senior Defensive Assistant, recently talked with Paul Allen about his respect for both Mike Zimmer and Gary Kubiak and their relationships, his role with the team’s defense and how he can make an impact, his time with Green Bay and scheming against Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs, Brett Favre’s return to Lambeau Field in 2009, and more.

The Minnesota Vikings have added Roy Anderson to the coaching staff as assistant defensive backs coach and Imarjaye Albury as assistant defensive line coach.

Courtney Cronin at the ESPN NFC North Blog notes tThe Vikings’ defense could look very different in 2020.

Mock Draft Time:

I’m going continue doing something different on the articles I post, we’re going to take a look at potential draftees. I’ll present the potential future Vikings and we’ll vote. I’ll be using simulator. Here’s what I was looking at with the most recent mock draft: link.

I selected Xavier McKinney, S, Alabama: Link to Draft Profile.

Obviously the selection of a Safety in the first round is going to depend on what the Vikings do or don’t do with free agency. Ant Harris has played himself into a position to get paid with his next contract (deservedly so) and considering the current cap position and other team needs the selection of McKinney might go a long way in maintaining a very good defense for the Vikings. Also, I’ve been calling for drafting Harrison Smith’s replacement for the last couple of years.

League News:

Detroit Lions release DT Damon ‘Snacks’ Harrison.

Tua Tagovailoa reveals ideal scenario, updates rehab.

Redskins part ways with veteran TE Jordan Reed.

We come to today’s media selection: ACDC - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap

Again, we all know the rules, but in case someone is new:
-No discussion of politics or religion
-No feeding of the trolls
-Leave the gender hatred at the door
-Keep the bad language to a minimum (using the spoiler tags, if you must)
-Speaking of which, if discussing a newer show or movie, please use spoiler tags
-No pictures that could get someone fired or in serious trouble with their employer
-If you can’t disagree in a civil manner, feel free to go away
-While navigating the open thread, just assume it’s sarcasm.
With that, the beer light is on and the bar is open. Belly up & tie one on. Don’t forget to tip your waiter, and Welcome Aboard!

Xavier McKinney, Safety, Alabama. Is he worth this year’s first round draft pick?
