A couple of days ago, we talked briefly about how it sounds like the Minnesota Vikings were going to say goodbye to both of their starting cornerbacks this offseason. Reports are now beginning to surface that they’re not expecting their most important pending free agent back, either.
Behind the great E$PN paywall, there are some rumors that surfaced during and after this week’s Scouting Combine. One of those rumors concerns safety Anthony Harris, and it probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise.
Vikings safety Anthony Harris is expected to earn more than $10 million per year after a breakout season, one source expects. Minnesota is bracing for life without him.
With the salary cap situation that the Vikings currently find themselves in and the fact that they’re already paying one safety a whole lot of money to be awesome in Harrison Smith, it’s not surprising to hear that their other awesome safety is probably going to be departing.
Harris signed with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent following the 2015 NFL Draft. He’s spent all five of his NFL seasons with the Vikings, taking over as the full-time starter next to Harrison Smith this past season. He started 14 games for the Vikings this past season, missing two games due to injury, and tied for the NFL lead in interceptions with six. He also added an interception in the Vikings’ postseason victory over New Orleans.
It doesn’t sound like the Vikings are going to have Anthony Harris back for the long term, and that’s a damn shame.
