With the start of the season approaching and both the head coach and general manager going into the final year of their contracts, the Minnesota Vikings had a decision to make about whether to let the men that run their football team on and off the field endure a “lame duck” season. On Friday, at least half of that issue has been taken care of.
Following up on what Warren told you about a few days ago, on Friday the Vikings and head coach Mike Zimmer finalized a contract extension that will keep Zimmer on the Minnesota sideline through the 2023 season.
Zimmer became the head coach of the Vikings before the 2014 season, and in his six years in Minnesota has compiled the third-best winning percentage in team history. His .599 mark trails only Bud Grant (.621) and Dennis Green (.610).
With Zimmer’s contract officially taken care of, the attention now turns to General Manager Rick Spielman. Spielman and Zimmer have had their contracts pretty much joined together since Zimmer got to town, and while Spielman has had his misses here and there, he’s also managed to build and sustain a pretty talented roster over the course of the past few years. There hasn’t been any word about whether or not a contract extension is in the works for the master of Rickspeak, but I would be shocked if it wasn’t.
In any event, congratulations to Mike Zimmer on his contract extension to remain the head coach of your Minnesota Vikings!
