Report: Vikings finalizing contract extension with Rick Spielman

Hashtag as expected

NFL: Detroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

A little more than a week ago, the Minnesota Vikings extended the contract of head coach Mike Zimmer, keeping him on the Minnesota sideline through the 2023 season. Now, as many of us expected, the team is finalizing a deal with the man that runs the front office.

Close, Personal Friend of The Daily Norseman Tom Pelissero™ is reporting that the Vikings are finalizing a multi-year contract extension with General Manager Rick Spielman.

Spielman has been with the Vikings since 2006 and started out as part of the ill-fated “Triangle of Authority” that made personnel decisions for the Vikings. He was given the full run of the team as the General Manager in 2012, and since then has helped to build the Vikings into one of the NFL’s most talented teams.

The terms of Spielman’s deal have not yet been announced, but if I had to venture a guess, I would think he’s being extended through the 2023 season as well. Zimmer and Spielman’s contracts have been tied together since Zimmer got to Minnesota in 2014, and I would have to wager that trend is going to continue.

Once we get more information on the new contract extension for Rick Spielman, we will share the details with you here. For now, however, it appears that the head guy in the Minnesota front office will be running things for at least a few more years.
