Free Agency 2021

With a projected cap of $175m for next season it will not surprise anyone to discover that the Vikings are over, and will need to work the numbers once again.

It could be worse - the Saints, Eagles, Packers, Falcons, Rams, Steelers, Texans and Chiefs are all worse off. I stll cannot quite see how the Saints got to be so far over but they are going to be cutting quite a few quality players which may include Ryan Ramcyck, Mashon Lattismore etc. Any team trading for them is looking at 1 year rental.

The Vikings will still make to cut players to sign draft picks and now we get to the usually suspects

*the figures are from Over the Cap

Cut Anytime

Riley Reiff Dead cap $2.2m, Savings $11.75m - on its own will almost get us back to level

Shamar Stephen Dead cap $1.334m, Savings $3.75m

Harrison Smith Dead cap $0, Savings $10.25m - I'm against this as we have very little at this position

Tyler Conklin Dead cap $70k Savings $920K

After 1st June

Kyle Rudolph Dead cap $1.45m, Savings $8m

Dan Bailey Dead cap $1.05m, Savings $2.75m

Dru Samia Dead cap $1.85m, Savings $850k

Adam Thielen Dead cap $1.8m, Savings $11.7m

and to put it out there, if we traded Michael Pierce to a 3-4 team needing a NT after 1st June, we'd take a hit of $2m but save $3m

All of these cuts before considering Pierce would get us $49.97m savings but we are $9.12m over the projected cap.

Realistically if we move on from Reiff, Stephen, Bailey and Samia basically we have enough for our cap signings and to get under the cap. Cutting Rudy won't happen until after 1st June, so we can then see what we might be able to pick up as a replacement and how expensive that replacement might be.

For those of you interested, Cousins traded after 1st June would result in $10m dead cap but $21m in Savings. The question is whether Spielman is brave enough to make the decision

If he's sat there on 29th April and has at No14 the chance for Lance or Wilson or Fields? The 49ers if they cut Garoppolo will be saving $24-$25m and already have $22m in cap space. They could a) sign a player that Shanahan likes and who is less injury prone b) use No13 on another skill position player. Shanahan could well be in the hot seat and may not wish to roll with a rookie in a critical year for him. Free Agency is also limited for the 49ers at QB.
