Vikings announce uniform numbers for 2021 Draft Class

And there are a couple of surprises

NFL: Preseason-Minnesota Vikings at Buffalo Bills Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

The Minnesota Vikings drafted 11 new players over the three days of the 2021 NFL Draft. Today, they announced the uniform numbers that those 11 players would be wearing when they take the field in purple for the first time.

Here’s the full listing, per the team’s website.

  • Christian Darrisaw - #71
  • Kellen Mond - #11
  • Chazz Surratt - #41
  • Wyatt Davis - #51
  • Patrick Jones II - #93
  • Kene Nwangwu - #26
  • Camryn Bynum - #43
  • Janarius Robinson - #95
  • Ihmir Smith-Marsette - #15
  • Zach Davidson - #40
  • Jaylen Twyman - #76

None of the new draftees appear to have taken advantage of the NFL’s new number rules. That’s a bit surprising, given that a couple of players on that list. . .Kene Nwangwu and Ihmir Smith-Marsette. . .wore single-digit numbers in college and could have adopted those numbers without taking the sort of financial hit that more veteran players might have to take.

Jaylen Twyman had to opt for the #76 because after Jones and Robinson took 93 and 95, there were no numbers in the 90s that weren’t already spoken for, so he wound up with a number that is not traditionally associated with defensive linemen.

As for Darrisaw, he took the number of the player that he has been brought in to replace in Riley Reiff. He could not go back to his college number, #77, because the Vikings retired that number years ago in honor of the late Korey Stringer.

So, those are your numbers for the newest members of the Vikings, folks. Any of them in particular stand out?
