Hey, more quarterbacks!

Hey, kids! Do you like quarterbacks? Well, then the Minnesota Vikings have got some good news for you.

After signing former Giants and Broncos quarterback Case Cookus earlier in the day, the Vikings have also claimed quarterback Danny Etling off of waivers.

Etling was a seventh-round pick of the New England Patriots in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Louisiana State. He spent the 2018 season with the Patriots as a part of their practice squad. He was briefly moved to wide receiver by the Patriots and later waived, getting claimed by the Atlanta Falcons.

The Falcons had no designs on moving Etling to wide receiver, keeping him at quarterback instead. He got a brief promotion to the active roster as Matt Ryan’s backup and was brought back to the practice squad after being released.

Atlanta waived Etling in 2020 and he signed on with the Seattle Seahawks. He spent all of 2020 on the Seattle practice squad and did not see any action. He was waived by the Seahawks yesterday after they, strangely enough, signed former Vikings’ backup Sean Mannion to serve as a backup to Russell Wilson.

With the claiming of Etling, the Vikings are now up to three quarterbacks that have not been made to isolate because of COVID protocols with Jake Browning, Cookus, and now Etling. How long will either of the latter two last on the roster? We’ll have to wait and see.
