As the Minnesota Vikings make moves to get their roster down to 53 players by the 3:00 PM Central roster deadline, they’ve made a cut in the defensive backfield.
The team has waived safety Luther Kirk as a part of their final cuts. He has been waived with an injury designation, meaning that if he clears waivers the Vikings will put him on injured reserve.
Kirk was signed to the Vikings’ practice squad last year, having come over from the Dallas Cowboys. He was elevated to the main roster for one game, the Vikings’ 28-22 victory over the Green Bay Packers. He spent the rest of the year on the practice squad after that elevation.
While the Vikings need backups at safety behind Harrison Smith and Xavier Woods, Kirk just didn’t do enough to distinguish himself in the race for those spots. He might be a candidate for the Vikings to bring back to the practice squad once they are able to start constructing it on Wednesday.
We are tracking all of the Vikings’ roster cuts on our Roster Cut Tracker, which you can find right here.
