NFL Roster Cuts: Minnesota Vikings waive Kenny Willekes

A mild surprise

Today, the Minnesota Vikings are making the necessary moves to get their roster down to 53 players, and one of the players they’re waiving to get there is one that had a very solid preseason.

The team is waiving defensive lineman Kenny Willekes.

Willekes was drafted by the Vikings in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft, but wound up missing the entire season after suffering a knee injury in practice and going on injured reserve. He saw work at both defensive tackle and defensive end this preseason, and his versatility appeared to be his ticket to making the roster. However, the Vikings have decided to go in a different direction, at least for now.

It would not be surprising to see the team bring Willekes back to the practice squad, provided he survives the waiver process.
