Good afternoon Everyone is Norse land and hope you all had a good weekend despite the obvious. Well to say the least it was a ugly game by the amount of yellow we saw on the field and whether it was a fumble or not it never should've come to that point. Going back to my post in July on this game how did I turn out
Week 1 At Cincinnati
This is one of those games that on paper the Vikings should win but these are also the same games that we cringe at because of Zimmer's pour planning for teams we should beat. Tee Higgins showed enough at the end of the season to let AJ Green go and then the Bengals go out and add Jamar Chase to give Joe Burrow a lethal duo of weapons out wide. Returning also to the RB position is Joe Mixon who looks the part as a franchise RB. If The Bengals can protect Joe Burrow which was something they couldn't do last year with a revamped OL in Rookie Jackson Carman, Jonah Williams and our own Riley Reiff up front this could be a sleeper team in 2021. I do think Chase is going to break out in this game and do this best to show up his former LSU teammate in JJ. With so much uncertainty up front and our ablity to stop the run I think Burrow throws a late INT and going to go out on a limb here though and say we beat the Bengals to start the season on a late 4th QTR FG
Damn, I got the score right just flip flopped, I did in fact call it back in July that both Hendrickson and Jamar Chase would be key additions and they were with both having their presence known early in the game. I just hate it when I'm right but please explain to me again why we signed Breeland? I mean with the news that SF has inquired about Cam Dantzler and with how good Mike Hughes is playing now in KC maybe it's not that these guys are so bad its that maybe the coaching is subpar? Either way if Minnesota trades Dantzler that should be a sign that the end is near for coach Zimmer. This is exactly what I was worried about earlier this summer in that our secondary is still a joke. Peterson was ok at best but watching Breeland in the SB and now with the Vikings its obvious the guy shouldn't be starting. We did generate pressure as we get get 5 Sacks including 2 from Micheal Pierce who looked fantastic in this game. The run defense was as stout as I would expect as we still allowed Joe Mixon to rush for 127 yards and a TD all and all it was not a good outing for the vaunted Mike Zimmer defense that everyone this year was picking to have a bounce back year. I know it's early but was not a good showing by what was suppose to be strength of this team.
Ok, what can you take away from this game the obvious was all of the O line penalties whether it was false starts or holding penalties, illegal formations it was all there. The interior of the line still looks to be a revolving door as Bradbury, Udoh and Cleveland all looked to be struggle against the pass rush, and Hill looked to struggle all day. Thielen still looks to be doing Thielen things as he's still the best route runner on the team getting separation at will and catching 2 TD's when KC wasn't holding the ball or jogging for his life. It was interesting to hear Zimmer call out KC at halftime as I think the honey moon stage of the Zimmer and Cousins marriage is over. Its very obvious that Zimmer feels his QB needs to play better and I'm afraid that we have seen what KC is going to give us and that is a good stat line but can he win when the pressure is on? This team will win and lose on the shoulders of Cook, Thielen and Jefferson those 3 need to step up and be the leaders of this team that clearly KC can't handle.
The next 4 weeks don't shape up any better as we play the following
I know some of you are thinking you threw Detroit in there ? Yes I did the way they played a talented SF defense and put up 33 on them what does that say for our Defense? If we can't fix the Oline issues and this secondary quick I don't think its a stretch to say we start the season 0-6 before our bye week. This team has major holes on both sides of the defense and if we do in fact go 0-6 to start the year Zimmer needs to be gone as HC and Mond needs to start to see what we might have in him. The idea that we keep bringing back players familiar with the system is a joke and its not acceptable. I know DN will throw all the blame at Cousins and rightfully so he should shoulder it but this also goes on the coaching staff. This team has good pieces in place and its time to win now or get off the pot and Zimmer and company along with Rick Spielman need to be put on notice.
I'm sticking with my pick I made back in July and say Arizona blows us out as I just don't see our defense slowing down those WR's.
My 1st Mock of the Season
I will be including one of these in each week of my report as I love CFB and the draft as many of you over the years have read my mocks. Its been a crazy year to start the year off so far so without further ado lets start with the unveiling of my top 25 prospects to start the year
1. Kavon Thibodeaux, Edge Oregon
2. Derek Stingley, CB, LSU
3. Kyle Hamilton, S, Notre Dame
4. Tyler Linderbaum, OL, Iowa
5. Christain Harris, LB, Alabama
6. Demarvin Leal, DT, Texas A&M
7. Aidan Hutchinson, Edge, Michigan
8. Garret Wilson, WR, Ohio St
9. Evan Neal, OL, Alabama
10. Nakobe Dean, LB, Georgia
11. Adam Anderson, Edge Georgia
12. Jordan Davis, DT, Georgia
13. Chris Olave, WR, Ohio St
14. Sam Howell, QB, North Carolina
15. George Karlaftis, Purdue, Edge
16. Kenyon Green, OL, Texas A&M
17. Kaiir Elam, CB, Florida
18. Ahmad Gardner, CB, Cincinnati
19. Desmond Ridder, QB, Cincinnati
20. Treylon Burks, WR, Arkansas
21. Spencer Rattler, QB, Oklahoma
22. David Bell, WR, Purdue
23. Breece Hall, RB, Iowa State
24. Kedon Slovis, QB, USC
25. Drake Jackson, USC
Pretty straight forward top 25 as most major publications out there have alot of the same players with some twists especially at the QB position. I don't believe this QB class is as deep or as talent as last years as Sam Howell my #1 rated QB fell all the way down to 14 in my ranks. Now does this mean that he will be picked 14th or lower no because QB's are drove up the boards as we all know and dare overvalued by GM's Lets get to the draft as this is just a weekly deal I won't go into too much detail but you will get my rationale for the pick.
Rd 1- Derek Stingley, CB, LSU- Our Current starting CB's consist of Peterson, Breeland, Dantzler, Alexander, Boyd, and Hand. If in fact Zimmer is shown the door at the end of the year I hope at some point this season we see what we have in Kellen Mond and it doesn't force us to take a QB early. We need a true Lockdown CB and Stingley has the potential to be that guy.
Rd 2- Justyn Ross, WR, Clemson- Ross missed all of 2020 with a neck injury and has started the year slow with a new QB at Clemson in DJ U. I love Theilen and Adam is still playing well but I have no faith in guys like Osborn or ISM to make a true impact next to JJ in the coming years. we need that big bodied WR that can win the 50/50 balls and give a new young QB a big target.
Rd-3- Cade Mays, G, Tennessee- I was hoping RS would've drafted Trey Smith last year as I thought he would make a great G on our team and even though yes we Wyatt Davis in the 3rd he is yet to make a impact on the roster. Mays brings a 6'6 320 frame with nimble feet inside to play G. I think by the end of the year the Ezra Cleveland Expertiment will have run its course and the musical chairs which has been our IOL will continue. I would move Davis to LG and draft Mays to be the starting RG it's all about size in the NFL and Mays brings that
Rd 5- Mike Rose, LB, Iowa State- A smart and steady LB Rose lead the Cyclones in Tackles last year. He won't set blazing #'s at the combine but the guy is always around the ball and that is what we need
Rd 6- Jack Jones, CB- Arizona State- I stay with defense in the later rounds and bring in another CB. Jones was a former 5 star recruit at USC and fell out of favor at the school for academic and off the field issues. He's seemed to find a home in Tempe as he has been the starter there now for 2 years. only 5'11 he could slide into nickel situations early and maybe develop into a capable starter
Rd 7- Trevor Penning, T, Northern Iowa- A solid swing T late in the draft that will likely start on the PS. Rashod Hill is pretty terrible atm so we will need some depth on the OL next year.
Hope you enjoyed reading, enjoy the game tomorrow and hopefully this posts get better as the year goes on.
