We mentioned yesterday that the Minnesota Vikings were looking at potentially bringing back a familiar face to serve as the backup to Kirk Cousins at quarterback, and today the Vikings did just that.
The team has brought back Sean Mannion, who spent this year’s Training Camp with the Seattle Seahawks and served as Cousins’ backup for the past two seasons. The team signed him to fill the final open spot on their practice squad.
It will be interesting to see how the Vikings handle the quarterback situation, as the team has Cousins and rookie Kellen Mond on the active roster with Mannion on the practice squad. Per NFL rules, the team can “call up” Mannion from the practice squad twice before they need to add him permanently to the roster or let him go. Should Cousins get injured during a game, it would appear that Mond would end up finishing whatever game that was and the team would have to examine whether or not Mannion would have to take a more permanent place on the roster.
With that, here is the complete Vikings’ practice squad as things stand right now:
- RB Ameer Abdullah
- OL Zack Bailey
- FB Jake Bargas
- LB Tuf Borland
- TE Zach Davidson
- S Myles Dorn
- G Dakota Dozier
- G Kyle Hinton
- WR Trishton Jackson
- QB Sean Mannion
- WR Myron Mitchell
- CB Parry Nickerson
- WR Whop Philyor
- RB A.J. Rose Jr.
- CB Tye Smith
- DE Kenny Willekes
Gotta tell you. . .there are a lot of “old guys” on that practice squad, that’s for sure. Plenty of guys with some NFL experience that the team can potentially turn to if anything happens. I’ll leave it up to you to interpret whether or not that’s a good thing or a bad thing.
