Stafford/Goff 0.5 Cousins to Carolina, Would you?

This is a rebuilding scenario. It assumes we are shedding salary by trading or cutting veterans and getting younger, especially through the draft.

Trade proposal #1

Panthers get:

  • Kirk Cousins
  • 1st round #12 overall

Vikings get:

  • Sam Darnold
  • 1st round #6 overall
  • 2022 4th round pick from Panthers
  • CJ Henderson

Matt Rhule is getting desperate. He needs a better QB to survive the 2022 season. The Panthers have requested an interview with Klint Kubiak, possibly setting up Cousins to hit the ground running, being familiar with the OC and his scheme.

Vikings are going to be in year 1 with a new regime. There is no desperation here except to turn the page on the Zimmer/Spielman/Cousins era. The new coaching staff will have a crack at solving Darnold and the payoff could be big. However, if the young (25 in June) QB falters, the team will be in prime position to draft a QB in next year's draft, which should be a much better QB class than this upcoming draft.

Both teams help each other out relative to their circumstances; Panthers, possibly nearing the end of the HC's tenure, improve at the most important position, Vikings starting anew gain over $15 million in cap space and avoid a crippling 3rd deal with Cousins while improving their first round pick.

Vikings taking on Darnold's substantial 5th year option, about $19 million, helps ease the burden of Cousins $35 million salary. Both teams can part with their QB cleanly after the season with zero lingering effects.

Darnold will be surrounded with talent like he has never seen in his professional career. Cousins is going to be backed up by a better defense than he had last season.

Trade proposal #2

Panthers get:

  • Kirk Cousins
  • Danielle Hunter
  • Eric Kendricks
  • Adam Thielen
  • Wyatt Davis
  • 2022 2nd round pick from Vikings
  • 2022 3rd round pick from Vikings

Vikings get:

  • 2022 1st round #6 overall
  • Sam Darnold
  • Yetur Gross-Matos
  • CJ Henderson
  • 2022 4th round pick from Panthers

Megadeal!! Panthers, possibly having hired Kubiak, get a ready made combo of Cousins and Thielen, along with potential help with their OL problems in Davis. Their defense now has premium pass rushers at the ends and fill a big hole with a veteran linebacker who can cover and has versatility fitting any linebacker position and scheme.

Vikings get that 6th overall pick while holding on to their own first rounder and have far and away the most exciting first round draft capital they have had since who knows when, picking 6th and 12th overall!

Would you take either proposal? Would you tweak anything? Add or subtract megadeal list items and/or swap in your own items to customize to your taste.
