Minnesota Vikings at Detroit Lions: Third quarter recap and fourth quarter discussion

The final quarter of the year is here

NFL: Minnesota Vikings at Detroit Lions Lon Horwedel-USA TODAY Sports

Here we are, folks. . .the final Open Thread of the final game of the season. Get those four fingers up above your heads one more time, because we’re heading to the fourth quarter in Detroit with your Minnesota Vikings trailing the Detroit Lions by a score of 20-13.

Minnesota’s first drive of the second half showed plenty of promise, with the Vikings marching down to the Detroit 31-yard line. From there, they faced a 4th-and-3 and Kevin O’Connell elected to go for it. . .and Nick Mullens’ pass to Brandon Powell was half a yard short of the line to gain for a turnover on downs.

Detroit took advantage of the turnover on downs to go down and score again, this time on a 1-yard run from David Montgomery to make the score 20-6 in favor of the home team halfway through the third quarter.

Minnesota finally got into the end zone late in the third quarter, as the Vikings went for it on a 4th-and-1 in Detroit territory, and Mullens found Jefferson for a 38-yard touchdown that cut the lead to seven, 20-13.

As we move to the fourth quarter of play, the Lions have a 2nd-and-5 from their own 30-yard line.

It’s time for the final quarter of the 2023 NFL regular season, ladies and gentlemen. Come on in and join us as the season comes to a close, won’t you?
