The Going For it Offseason

I'm not advocating for this, but Mark's plan got me thinking if I were in charge what would my pushing my chips in, trying ot win a SB this year offseason look like? My goals for this plan are:

1. Field the best possible team in 2024.

2. Field the best possible team in 2025.

3. Prepare for a reset year in 2026 (essentially, limit my future borrowing to 2026 and don't kill my cap past then).

Like my Financially Conservative plan, I used overthecap, all credit goes to them for the hard bits. I'll update the cap picture as I go along.

To begin:

Season Total Liabilities Team Salary Cap Cap Space
2024 $223,518,037 $248,176,169 $24,658,132
2025 $120,510,470 $260,000,000 $139,489,530
2026 $57,089,891 $284,000,000 $226,910,109
2027 $21,600,000 $314,000,000 $292,400,000

Initial moves/Housekeeping:

I'm less concerned about all of the young/cheap players on the fringe of the roster. I extend a ERFA tender to Nick Muse, Theo Jackson and TJ Smith. Tonga can go.

I cut H Smith post June 1 for maximum cap savings this year, Lowry also post June 1, P Jones II, Nwangwu and Gaskin (those last 3 all pre June 1). Lowry might be injury guaranteed and still hurt at the start of the new league year, but OTC lets me do it so for now I'm doing it.

I let Osborn, Risner, Wonnum, Bullard, Davenport and most of the other FA's walk. If the FA markets for some of those guys aren't too robust, or I can bring back Wonnum on a 2 year cheap deal I would do so. I attempt to resign Cousins, Hunter, Hicks and Powell. I'd be OK with bringing back Mundt, Reed, Bullard, Schlottmann, Ellefson, and Dye. Anybody else who wants to stay takes the minimum, for now we'll figure just Mundt and Reed.

I'm not messing around with Hicks nor Powell so I probably overpay. Powell 2 years, $3 mil signing bonus, minimum salary this year, $2 mil next year. 1 void year in 206. Hicks is basically a one year deal for $5 mil but I use two void years to bring the cap hit down to $3 mil. Davenport I'd like to bring back because his cost is probably minimal now and I could spread his dead cap hit further out... but in the going all in plan I can't count on him to be on the field. If I have extra money at the end maybe I'd bring him back for depth basically.

Extensions:

I extend Hunter to a deal with a total of $82 million, which is functionally guaranteed for the first two years with just under half of the 3rd year guaranteed.

33 mil signing bonus, salaries of 5, 17 and 27 million

Cap hits of $23.4, 35.4 and 38 million

It ends up being $12 million guaranteed in 2026, which totals $67 million guaranteed for the deal, which I think is fairly rich. I'm intentionally trying to overpay and have fairly high guarantees to A) bring him back for sure because there just is no cheap way to get multiple starting caliber edges in the same year and B) keep the contract length limited to 3 years which I'm guessing he would like longer.

I do the same thing with JJ as in the last plan, which was a rip off of Mark's estimated JJ extension from a while back. I just dropped a void year for future flexibility, I'll keep it that way so I don't need to do any more math. Really JJ is plan proof, and I have no problem with him having money that goes past 2026 unlike some other guys.

35 mil signing bonus, salaries of 12.743, 23, 29 and 33 mil

Cap hits of 21.493, 31.750, 37.750 and 41.750 million (his cap hit this year goes up by less than $2 million)

Kirko Chains is my best bet to win this year probably, so that's what I'm doing. I figure he will want 3 years but we're going to stick to just 2 and overpay for those two essentially (at least I think it's an overpay, who knows really). $44 mil signing bonus, $10 mil salary in 2024 and $26 mil salary in 2025.

Cap hits of $31.25, $47.25 and a dead cap hit of $30 mil in 2026. Basically I kicked his entire dead cap from this year two years down the road (and made it worse) to keep his cap hits more manageable. I'm NOT in favor of this in real life, but in this plan, it's what makes sense. You could essentially fail to kick the can with Kirk's contract at all, but you end up using up every available cap dollar this year, still having a huge cap hit next year and still having a $13 million dead cap hit in 2026. It really doesn't make sense if you're going all in to win now.

Current status of the cap:

Season Total Liabilities Team Salary Cap Cap Space
2024 $218,318,246 $248,176,169 $29,857,923
2025 $220,863,804 $260,000,000 $39,136,196
2026 $149,839,891 $284,000,000 $134,160,109

Glaring holes exist at LG, IDL, Edge. Also some fairly big holes at RB and CB. Arguably Safety.

My FA crush this year is Andrew Van Ginkel. I give him a similar deal to last time but without the void year because I'm trying not to mess with 2027 that much. PFF says 2 years $13 mil, I do 3 years with an $9 million signing bonus, salaries of $1.5, $2.5 and $4 mil. Cap hits are $4.5, $5.5, $7 mil.

Now for LG, which is going to be expensive. I want one of the top two guys, and I can't get either of them without spending into 2027. So be it. I don't care if Hunt plays RG and not left guard, I'll stick him there and move Ingram, who is getting competition from a rookie this year anyway. I give Hunt a signing bonus of $28 mil, with salaries of $5, 10, 12, and 15 mil.

Cap hits are $12, 17, 19 and 22 mil.

I probably need one more Edge either via FA or via the draft, I'd like at least one CB to shore up that room a bit and if I could find a RB that would be nice.

For my second edge I target Dorance Armstrong, but I fail to pony up enough and I lose him, so I instead go after AJ Epenesa. Can't get him either. I settle for Anfernee Jennings for a 2 year deal totaling $11 million, $6 mil signing bonus, one void year $1.5, $2.5 mil in base salaries and cap hits of $3.5 mil and $4.5 mil plus $2 mil dead in year 3,

I still want a DT and a CB, but I can't really afford both unless I cheap out on the DT. I decide I can figure out CB with Flores magic and hope the young guys step up a bit. I sign Grover Stewart to a 3 year deal with a $15 mil signing bonus, salaries of $1.5, 4.5 and 8 mil and cap hits of 6.5, 9.5 and 13 mil.

That's it for FA, I've borrowed a little too much from next year and not enough from 2026, but we can figure that out in 2025, for now I'm good with enough cap space to sign my draft picks.

Draft Targets:

Running back depth (mid/late rounds?)

Guard (early- competition for Ingram)

DT (mid rounds?)

Developmental Edge (early rounds?)

ILB (mid rounds?)

CB (early?)

I'm already regretting signing the second edge, I would have preferred to grab a CB with that money and draft an edge high. Now, I kind of want to take both positions high. I suppose let's see how the draft falls to me.

I did a mock draft simulator on proffootballnetwork.com. On the clock at 11, I got offered three trades, #29, 61, 73, 2025 Det 2nd and 2025 Phi 4th for #11, #13 and a 2025 2nd for #11 and 178, and #18 and 49 for #11. The first two seem super unrealistic, so I opt for the Bengals trading back. I would really like some future picks because next year's draft is going to be my QB draft probably, so I counter with #11 and #164 for #18, #80 and their 2025 2nd. They say yes.

Offers again at #18, weirdly the Rams are willing to give up their 2nd next year for my 3rd next year just to move a spot up. That's an instant yes in real life I think but for now I'll consider it unrealistic. I stick and I take BPA which is Laiatu Latu Edge.

As the 2nd round starts I get nervous I won't get the IOL help that I want so i trade up from #42 to #35, giving up #129 and 155 to get there. I grab Jackson Powers-Johnson. I don't know who is going to play C and who is going to play G, but I want a heir apparent to Bradbury and maybe he can play G? Figure that out later.

In the 3rd I'm not in love with anyone there, so I grab LB Cedric Gray hopefully to take over next year from Hicks.

At 108 I grab Austic Estime

With the balance I pick depth.

Here is the roster. Are they a contender?

QB: Kirk Cousins, Nick Mullens, Jaren Hall

RB: Ty Chandler, Alexander Mattison, Estime, DeWayne McBride

FB: CJ Ham

WR: Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, Brandon Powell, Jalen Nailor, Lucky Jackson, N’Keal Harry, Trishton Jackson, Mailk Knowles, Thayer Thomas, Daylen Baldwin
