The drum beating is over! Justin Jefferson got the bag! Congratulations to JJ for earning his new deal!
I know there have been a few fine folks who were not big fans of paying a wide receiver this much money. I posted this in the 06/01 open thread for your consideration ...
I wanted to take a cursory look at how wide receivers performed after receiving a large extension.
Tyrell Hill signed a 4 yr 120M contract on March 23, 2022.
In 2022, he played 800 snaps, caught 119 passes for 1,710 yards with 7 TDs.
In 2023, he played 655 snaps, caught 119 passes for 1,799 yards with 13 TDs.
...
Davante Adams signed a 5 yr 140M contract on March 17, 2022.
In 2022, he played 1044 snaps, caught 103 passes for 1,144 yards with 8 TDs.
In 2023, he played 901 snaps, caught 100 passes for 1,516 yards with 14 TDs.
...
Amari Cooper signed a 5 yr 100M contract on March 16, 2020.
In 2020, he played 943 snaps, caught 92 passes for 1,114 yards with 5 TDs.
In 2021, he played 835 snaps, caught 68 passes for 865 yards with 8 TDs.
In 2022, he played 978 snaps, caught 78 passes for 1,160 yards with 9 TDs.
In 2023, he played 883 snaps, caught 72 passes for 1,250 yards with 5 TDs.
...
Cooper Kupp signed a 3 yr 80.1M contract on June 8, 2022.
In 2022, he played 530 snaps, caught 75 passes for 812 yards with 6 TDs.
In 2023, he played 710 snaps, caught 59 passes for 737 yards with 5 TDs.
...
DK Metcalf signed a 3 yr 72M contract on July 28, 2022.
In 2022, he played 893 snaps, caught 90 passes for 1,048 yards with 6 TDs.
In 2023, he played 785 snaps, caught 66 passes for 1,114 yards with 8 TDs.
...
Deebo Samuel signed a 3 yr 71.55M contract on July 31, 2022.
In 2022, he played 659 snaps, caught 56 passes for 632 yards with 2 TDs.
In 2023, he played 688 snaps, caught 60 passes for 892 yards with 7 TDs.
There is no real reason to believe that Justin Jefferson cannot continue to produce and play like he has in the past besides ineffective QB play. Most of us are hoping that the QB play will be good enough but realize there could be some struggles. Some of us cannot let go of the past and want to bemoan the fact that their favorite player is no longer on the team. No need to name names as these people will reveal themselves.
The structure of his deal is interesting. I did many offseason plans and one had a 4 yr 140M deal with one void year here.
I am not taking any credit just like I do not for mock drafts. I do way too many versions so the odds of me guessing right are high.
I think the structure is very interesting.
They are giving him a 36.938M signing bonus and a 30M option bonus in 2025. He will get the minimum salary the next two years.
His salaries are 1.125M, 1.170M, 24.99M, 29.25M, & 33.24M.
His cap hits are 8.512M, 15.317M, 39.1M, 43.397M, 47.387M, and 6M for the void year in 2029 at age 30.
The team has $26,275,857 in cap space according to overthecap and still has to sign McCarthy and Turner which should cost about 5M. They also need money for the practice squad players which should be around 3M ish. That will leave about 18M in cap space.
I am wondering what their plans are for the cap space? Are they considering some kind of trade? I do not think there are any good free agents that they could sign but you never know.
I do not believe they will extend Darrisaw just like they did not with JJ. They could extend Bynum and Phillips though.

Vikings great Jared Allen downplays importance of OTAs: ‘It’s a glorified workout’
Allen, who appeared on OutKick’s “Don’t @ Me with Dan Dakich” didn’t think fans should concern themselves with who shows and who no-shows for organized team activities with the season three months from kickoff.
“Absolutely not. I had some of my best seasons not doing OTAs,” he told Dakich. “OTAs are good for getting rust off. You’re out there in helmets, you’re not doing much. It’s a glorified workout, basically. I wouldn’t stress too much about it if I was a fan.”

Minnesota Vikings: What is the priority under center?
So when Kevin O’Connell and Co. weigh Sam Darnold versus first-round pick J.J. McCarthy at quarterback, will they prefer patient long-term development or instant results? Maybe they can have both. McCarthy is the future, but with a skill group featuring Aaron Jones, Justin Jefferson and other elite talent, the time to make another playoff push could be now.
