Looking back at the five most important plays from the Vikings’ win over the Packers.

The theme of my weekly preview for Sunday’s game between the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers was “Bummer.” Basically the gist was I thought it was going to be a closely contested game between two evenly matched teams. But in the end I thought Aaron Rodgers was going to be the difference, which was a bummer to me as a Vikings fan.

Well, I was partially right. The game was a bummer and Aaron Rodgers did end up being the difference. Just not in the way I imagined.

Let’s go through our weekly look into the five biggest plays from Sunday’s game, starting with the one that’s being talked about the most today.

Play 1: Packers ball, 2nd & 9 at the Green Bay 39. First quarter, 7:04 remaining. (Shotgun) A.Rodgers pass incomplete short right to M.Bennett [A.Barr]. GB-A.Rodgers was injured during the play.

The exact moment Anthony Barr became persona non grata throughout the entire state of Wisconsin.

Nobody should want to see star NFL players get hurt, regardless of team affiliation. Rodgers is one of the best quarterbacks in the league, and the NFL is worse off now that he’s going to miss a significant amount of time with a broken collarbone. (If you are one of those fans that cheered when Rodgers went down, knock it off. Don’t use the excuse of “well they did it when Teddy Bridgewater went down” either.) That said, I can’t agree with the Packer backers that consider this a dirty or late hit. Barr hit him with a clean form tackle just as the ball was being released.

Green Bay fans can be furious with the result, as they should be. But getting upset with the hit itself is just misguided rage. If Packers fans really want to get upset with Barr, get mad about his stupid headbutt on Davante Adams. That was a dirty hit.

Either way, Rodgers’ injury changed the outlook of the game and possibly the landscape of the NFC playoff picture. Its repercussions will be felt for weeks to come.

Play 2: Vikings ball, 1st & 10 at the Green Bay 22. Second quarter, 12:19 remaining. (Shotgun) J.McKinnon up the middle to GB 20 for 2 yards (K.Clark). FUMBLES (K.Clark), RECOVERED by GB-C.Matthews at GB 19. C.Matthews to MIN 18 for 63 yards (L.Treadwell). FUMBLES (L.Treadwell), ball out of bounds at MIN 18.

With Rodgers out, the Vikings took the lead early in the second quarter after Xavier Rhodes picked off Brett Hundley and Jerick McKinnon cashed in with a 27-yard touchdown reception. The defense forced a quick three-and-out, Justin Vogel shanked a punt, and the Vikings were in great shape to go up by two scores on the reeling Packers.

Not so fast.

McKinnon fumbled and Clay Matthews took it all the way back from one red zone to the other. Three plays later, the game was tied. The Vikings were letting a wounded team hang around, which is always a dangerous proposition.

Play 3: Vikings ball, 3rd & 7 at the Green Bay 49. Third quarter, 11:36 remaining. (Shotgun) C.Keenum pass short left to J.McKinnon to GB 41 for 8 yards (J.Jones).

This play shouldn’t have counted.

McKinnon made a great effort to convert on third down and set up what would become the first of three Kai Forbath second half field goals. But after looking at the broadcast replay, it was pretty obvious that the ball hit the turf while McKinnon caught the low pass.

Of course, the Packers couldn’t challenge the play. They had already challenged twice and won only one of them. This play illustrated two sad truths about yesterday’s game:

The NFL challenge system is asinine. It basically assumes that it’s impossible for referees to get more than two calls incorrect against a team.

The FOX team of Thom Brennaman, Troy Aikman, and Mike Pereira were decidedly not at the top of their game during the broadcast Sunday. It took them three real-time minutes, which included an inexplicable Vikings timeout and two plays after this one, to figure out that Green Bay couldn’t challenge McKinnon’s catch. It also took them a full 13 seconds before realizing Jordy Nelson was under center on Green Bay’s fake-fake punt later in the third quarter. With Joe Buck gone for baseball, most fans assumed they would be yelling at their TV less on Sunday. That definitely wasn’t the case.

Anyway, the play stood when it shouldn’t have, and the Vikings got three points out of it. Thanks, ridiculous NFL challenge rules!

Play 4: Vikings ball, 2nd & 5 at the Minnesota 22. Third quarter, 4:38 remaining. C.Keenum pass deep left to L.Treadwell pushed ob at MIN 47 for 25 yards (H.Clinton-Dix) [C.Matthews].

Laquon Treadwell sighting!

Treadwell nearly doubled his career yardage on Sunday, setting career highs with three catches for 51 yards. Calling this his best game ever is one of the lowest bars ever to clear, but let’s just appreciate what an amazing grab it was.

With Stefon Diggs sidelined and the Packers secondary in shambles, Treadwell needed to show at least something to give Vikings fans hope going forward. This did the trick, and it helped set up a field goal that finally made it a two-score game.

Play 5: Packers ball, 3rd & 2 at the Green Bay 45. Fourth quarter, 12:27 remaining. B.Hundley pass short left intended for J.Nelson INTERCEPTED by H.Smith at MIN 46. H.Smith pushed ob at GB 35 for 19 yards (J.Nelson).

Treadwell wasn’t the only Viking with a ridiculous catch on Sunday.

Harrison Smith is a superhero. That’s the only way to explain how great he has been at safety over the past few years. Smith had five tackles, 1.5 sacks, and this amazing interception that set up the game’s final points and sealed the victory. Even after the one mistake he did make—a pass interference penalty that negated a Green Bay holding penalty on third down—he came back and got the sack on the very next play.

There might not be a better do-everything safety in the NFL than Harrison Smith, and I am so incredibly glad that he plays on my favorite team.

Where we remember that a win is a win, no matter how it comes

Hey there, everyone! Ted is tending to some family issues this week, so it’s one of those rare occasions where yours truly gets the opportunity to write the Stock Market Report. When it comes to the SMR, I’m pretty much the Case Keenum to Ted’s Sam Bradford/Teddy Bridgewater. . .I’m just trying not to screw things up too badly. But, as the Vikings have done on numerous occasions, when the starter goes down we’ll all steel our resolve and get through this together. So, join me, won’t you?

On Sunday, the Minnesota Vikings completed their early NFC North mini-run with a matchup against their most hated rivals, the Green Bay Packers. The Vikings were looking up at the Packers in the NFC North standings, as the Packers had a one game lead and could have truly taken control of the division with a victory in Minnesota. They came in on a roll after their big victory over the Dallas Cowboys last week, and the fears of every purple and gold bleeding fan everywhere that the Packers could come into U.S. Bank Stadium and lift the Lombardi Trophy this February were very, very real.

However, as we’ve seen on more than one occasion in the National Football League, everything can change in the blink of an eye. Isn’t that right, Mr. Bowie?

Your “The NFC North is officially wide open and so is the entire NFC” version of the Stock Market Report follows.

Blue Chip Stocks

Harrison Smith, S: After making the biggest play of the Vikings’ Monday night victory over Chicago last week, Smith decided he needed to one-up himself against the Packers. Smith was all over the field on Sunday, collecting one and a half sacks and an incredible diving interception to snuff out a Packers drive at midfield and set up a Kai Forbath field goal. There might be safeties in this league that get more attention than Harrison Smith, but as I’ve maintained for the past few years, there isn’t a better one. Make the case for whoever you want, but I’ll take the Hitman every single time.

Everson Griffen, DE: It took Griffen a while, but he registered a sack in his sixth consecutive game, and spent a lot of time in the Green Bay backfield on Sunday. It didn’t matter who was lined up across from him, he was beating them constantly. Danielle Hunter got a little bit of steam as a potential Defensive Player of the Year candidate in the preseason, but if Griffen isn’t on the short list for it as things stand right now, then whatever list you’re looking at is terrible. And wrong.

Mike Zimmer or George Edwards or whoever is calling the Vikings defensive plays: Yes, Aaron Rodgers has done his share of slapping the Vikings around over the course of his career. But how many times have we seen a backup quarterback shred a Minnesota defense over the years? More times than I care to remember, to be honest. But not today. The Zim Reapers had Brett Hundley questioning his life choices from the first snap he took, forced him into three interceptions, and generally just made his life miserable. The Vikings’ defense did to Brett Hundley what good defenses are supposed do to backup quarterbacks. . .pound the crap out of them all afternoon.

Kai Forbath, K: Once again, Forbath was solid, hitting both of his extra points and accounting for all the scoring in the second half, including a 53-yard bomb in a situation where I honestly thought the Vikings were going to punt. He’s been perfect since missing a field goal against Detroit back in Week 4.

Solid Investments

Adam Thielen, WR: Say, did you know that Adam Thielen is from Detroit Lakes and played his college ball at the same place the Vikings have their Training Camp every year? Yeah, you know, but nobody is going to get tired of hearing the Adam Thielen story. With Stefon Diggs out of this one with a groin injury, Thielen needed to step up, and he did. He brought in nine grabs for 97 yards and, as usual, caught everything thrown in his direction.

Xavier Rhodes, CB: The Vikings knew going into this one that Jordy Nelson, who usually kills the Vikings, wasn’t 100%, so they made the move to have Rhodes shadow Davante Adams instead. Adams wound up with five catches for 54 yards and a touchdown that I’m relatively certain can’t be placed at Rhodes’ feet. I’m not totally sure how Adams fared against Rhodes specifically, but I’m going to assume that it wasn’t much better than anyone else that Rhodes has matched up with this year. Rhodes also had his first interception of the year, courtesy of a nice tip by the much-maligned Mackensie Alexander.

The offensive line: While it seemed that Case Keenum was under duress a few times in this one, the score sheet shows that Keenum was not sacked at all in this one. In a game that was largely dictated by the Minnesota defense, the offense did what they had to do in this one. A big part of that was on the offensive line.

Jerick McKinnon, RB: If not for the big fumble that shifted things from the Vikings being in the Green Bay red zone to the Packers getting their only touchdown of the afternoon, McKinnon potentially could have been a blue chip. However, he had a solid game overall, scoring both of Minnesota’s touchdown and having over 100 yards from scrimmage. The fumble, though. . .woof.

Laquon Treadwell, WR: I’m putting him here for this catch alone.

Junk Bonds

Latavius Murray, RB: While McKinnon has stepped up in the absence of Dalvin Cook, Murray has. . .well, not. He only had one carry less than McKinnon on Sunday (16 for McKinnon, 15 for Murray), but Murray’s 15 carries went for all of 28 yards. He had several plays where he took a handoff and appeared to just sort of stop in the backfield while getting dragged down for a loss. Murray signed a three-year deal with the Vikings this offseason, but he can be cut with no cap hit after one. If he wants to be back in 2018, he’s going to need to start stepping up.

Michael Floyd, WR: Floyd got the start in the absence of Stefon Diggs, and it may seem a bit harsh to put him here. But, if you’re going to start against a secondary that’s undermanned to start with, you’ve got to find a way to do better than one catch for five yards. He left during the game with an injury. Hopefully he and Diggs (or, you know, both) will be ready to go for next week against Baltimore.

Buy/Sell

Buy: Aaron Rodgers’ injury changed the game - Yes, any time a team loses one of the best quarterbacks of all time and arguably the best quarterback in the game right now, it changes things. Of course the game is different if Rodgers plays all four quarters but, well, he didn’t. And as a result, the NFC North and the NFC as a whole have both gotten a lot more interesting.

Sell: Rodgers’ injury is the only reason the Vikings won - Obviously, you’d rather face Brett Hundley than Aaron Rodgers. But, regardless of who was playing quarterback for the Packers, the Vikings’ defense is still really, really good, the Packers’ offensive line is still really, really not good, and the Packers’ defense was still short-handed. I thought Minnesota could win this one before the Rodgers injury, but we’ll never know. Oh, and if nobody noticed, the Vikings were missing a few guys, too (like their #1 quarterback and their #2 quarterback and their #1 running back and their #1 wide receiver and one of their starting safeties). But, you should be prepared to hear all about how the Vikings only beat the Packers because of the Rodgers injury for at least the next few days.

Buy: Mike Zimmer is a better football coach than Mike McCarthy - I mean. . .duh.

Sell: Mike Zimmer has all the nuances of coaching down - However, there are still things that Zimmer needs to work on as far as awareness. Specifically, I’m thinking of the play where Case Keenum hit Jerick McKinnon on a pass that, after watching the replay, hit the ground before McKinnon caught it, but the officials ruled a completion that went for a first down. Zimmer told the offense to rush to the line before the play could be reviewed. . .however, Mike McCarthy had already burned both of his challenges, meaning the play couldn’t be reviewed (fortunately for the Vikings). The Vikings wound up burning a timeout in that situation, and while it didn’t come back to bite them, it’s something that Zimmer (or someone on his staff) needs to be aware of.

Buy: The NFC North just got interesting - The Vikings and the Packers are now both 4-2, with the Detroit Lions at 3-3 after getting 52 points dropped on them by New Orleans today. Heck, even the Chicago Bears have decided to join the party, beating the Vikings’ opponent next week (the Baltimore Ravens) in overtime. With Rodgers likely not being back this season, this could come down to the Vikings and the Lions to battle this out. Yes, I know that when Rodgers got injured in 2013 the Packers won the NFC North, but that was largely because the Lions and Bears thought they would be generous and hand it to them. . .the Packers went 2-5-1 in the eight games that Rodgers missed.

Sell: Printing playoff tickets already - On paper, the Vikings should be considered the favorites in the NFC North. However, games aren’t played on paper. . .after all, the Detroit defense that got 52 points dropped on them by an offense that scored just 19 against Minnesota gave up all of seven to Minnesota a few weeks ago. The only thing that anybody knows about the National Football League is that nobody really knows anything about the National Football League. However, the Vikings should. . .should. . .be able to get to the bye week at 6-2 and then we get to see where things take us from there.

That’s my version of the Stock Market Report for this week, folks. Ted will be back in this space where he should be for the Ravens game. We’ll have some more on this one over the next day or two.

The Vikings got a much easier win than expected against a divisional foe

The Minnesota Vikings went into their game against the Green Bay Packers knowing that it was a huge contest for their season going forward. On a day when the division opened up considerably, they went out and did what they needed to do.

Fueled by their defense and the opportunity to take advantage of an inexperienced backup quarterback, the Vikings took down their division rivals from Wisconsin by a final score of 23-10 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

The two teams were scoreless after the first quarter, but the big news came on Green Bay’s second offensive possession, Aaron Rodgers rolled to his right and was taken down by Anthony Barr, slamming his throwing shoulder into the U.S. Bank Stadium turf. Rodgers went to the medical tent, and was ultimately carted back to the locker room. The Packers were forced to go with Brett Hundley at the quarterback position after that play.

On the first play of the second quarter, the Vikings dented the scoreboard as they beat a Green Bay blitz with a beautiful screen from Case Keenum to Jerick McKinnon. McKinnon did the rest, as he weaved through the Green Bay defense for a 27-yard touchdown. Kai Forbath connected on the extra point, giving the Vikings a 7-0 lead just seconds into the second quarter of play.

Green Bay got on the board by taking advantage of a big Minnesota mistake, as Jerick McKinnon put the ball on the ground deep in Green Bay territory and Clay Matthews scooped up the fumble. Matthews returned the ball all the way to the Minnesota 17-yard line, and three plays later Hundley took advantage, finding Davante Adams for a 14-yard touchdown pass. Mason Crosby connected on the extra point, and the score was suddenly tied, 7-7.

Minnesota answered on the next drive, as McKinnon got into the end zone once again, courtesy of a three-yard touchdown run. The drive was set up by a big pass interference penalty on the first play of the drive as Adam Thielen was held, giving Minnesota the ball in Green Bay territory. That gave the Vikings a 14-7 lead midway through the second quarter.

Mason Crosby connected on a 26-yard field goal just after the two-minute warning, cutting the Minnesota lead to 14-10. To start the second half, Kai Forbath connected from 36 to once again make the Minnesota lead seven points at 17-10. Forbath then also got the first points of the fourth quarter, connecting from 34 yards out to make it a two-possession game at 20-10.

Following an interception by Harrison Smith, Forbath did his job once again, bombing one home from 53 yards out to give the Vikings an even larger lead, 23-10. Forbath was responsible for all the scoring in the second half, as that’s how this one ended as Brett Hundley’s last minute pass towards the end zone was intercepted by Trae Waynes to ice the game for the home team.

Offensively, it wasn’t a great statistical game for the Vikings. Case Keenum had an average day behind center, as he completed 24-of-38 passes for 239 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Adam Thielen came up just short of another 100-yard receiving performance, reeling in nine catches for 97 yards to pace the Vikings in that category. Laquon Treadwell had three catches for 51 yards for Minnesota, and Kyle Rudolph had 47 yards on five catches.

Jerick McKinnon had a very solid game for the second week in a row, scoring both of Minnesota’s touchdowns. He had 16 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown to lead the Vikings in rushing, and also chipped in with 30 yards on five receptions and another touchdown. Latavius Murray got 15 carries, but managed just 28 yards.

The big story of this one, however, was the Minnesota defense. After Rodgers went out with the injury, the defense made things miserable for Hundley all afternoon. Green Bay picked up just 14 first downs on the afternoon, many coming late in the contest. They had three interceptions of Hundley, as Xavier Rhodes, Trae Waynes, and Harrison Smith each collected one, and sacked Hundley three times.

With the victory, the Vikings climb to 4-2 and, if the Lions’ score against the New Orleans Saints holds up, will technically lead the NFC North via the head-to-head tiebreaker over Green Bay. They’ll host the Baltimore Ravens at U.S. Bank Stadium next weekend. Green Bay falls to 4-2 and will host the New Orleans Saints next weekend at Lambeau Field.

The Vikings defeat their rivals from Green Bay in the Border Battle by a final score of 23-10. Thanks to everyone that got their coverage of this week’s game right here at The Daily Norseman!

It’s still a one-score game, but the Vikings are threatening

Coming out of the locker room at halftime, the Minnesota Vikings held a 14-10 lead over the Green Bay Packers, and received the second half kickoff. Stacy Coley, now handling kickoff returns, mishandled the kick in the end zone, but it only resulted in a touchback, giving Case Keenum and company the ball at their own 25. The Vikings got an initial first down after a carry by Latavius Murray and a pass to Adam Thielen. A pass from Keenum to Kyle Rudolph pushed the Vikings to near midfield and picked up another first down.

Keenum then found Adam Thielen for a big 23-yard gain into the Packers’ red zone at the 18, but the drive stalled out as Kyle Rudolph dropped a pass that could have set up first-and-goal. Minnesota brought on Kai Forbath for a 36-yard field goal attempt, and he connected to extend the Minnesota lead to 17-10.

Trevor Davis took the Kai Forbath kickoff back to the Minnesota 25-yard line for the Packers’ first possession of the second half. Green Bay converted a third down on a pass from Brett Hundley to Randall Cobb. However, that was all their offense could do, and Justin Vogel came in to punt the football away. Marcus Sherels called for a fair catch at the Minnesota 17 for their next possession.

The Vikings got to near midfield rapidly as Keenum found Laquon Treadwell for an incredible, one-handed catch that gained 25 yards, and Jerick McKinnon carried it twice for another first down for Minnesota. Keenum then converted another third down, finding Kyle Rudolph and putting the Vikings on the edge of the red zone. The Vikings then faced another third down, but Adam Thielen came up just short. As we move to the fourth quarter of play, the Vikings are looking at 4th-and-short from the Green Bay 16-yard line.

We’ve got fifteen minutes of football remaining at U.S. Bank Stadium, ladies and gentlemen, and the Minnesota Vikings lead the Green Bay Packers by a score of 17-10. Can the purple hold on in this one?

Minnesota has a four-point lead at halftime, and will get the ball first to start the second half

After a scoreless first quarter, the Minnesota Vikings were knocking on the door in Green Bay Packers territory to start the second quarter of play. Case Keenum saw the blitz coming and hit Jerick McKinnon on a brilliantly executed screen pass, and McKinnon did the rest, weaving 27 yards for the game’s first touchdown. Kai Forbath added the extra point, and the Vikings took a 7-0 lead.

Jeff Janis took the ensuing kickoff for the Packers and returned the kick to the Green Bay 15. The Packers couldn’t do much, as they went three-and-out with Brian Robison and Harrison Smith splitting a sack on third down to end the drive. Justin Vogel came in to punt once again, and he shanked one that went out of bounds in Green Bay territory at the 42-yard line.

McKinnon picked up right where he left off, taking a handoff from Keenum on first down and dashing 20 yards down to the Green Bay 22. However, on the next play, McKinnon put the ball on the turf and it bounced right into the hands of Clay Matthews. Matthews brought it all the way down to the Minnesota 18-yard line.

Green Bay took advantage of the miscue, as Brett Hundley (in at quarterback for the injured Aaron Rodgers) had his first NFL touchdown pass, as he found a wide open Davante Adams for a 14-yard touchdown. Mason Crosby hit the extra point, and just like that the game was tied at 7.

Stacy Coley fielded the ensuing kickoff for the Vikings and returned it to the 16-yard line to set the Vikings up for their next drive. On the first play, Keenum was looking deep for Adam Thielen, and the Packers were called for pass interference to put the ball into Green Bay territory at the 42. Keenum then found Thielen again for another first down, and then hit Kyle Rudolph for another one down to the Green Bay 17.

After a run from Latavius Murray, Rudolph took a shovel pass down to the 2, and three plays later, McKinnon found himself in the end zone again, this time on a 3-yard run. Forbath was good on the extra point again, and the Vikings were back on top 14-7 midway through the quarter.

Green Bay went three-and-out on their next drive, as Harrison Smith came in on another safety blitz and took Hundley down for a big loss. Justin Vogel punted the ball away, and Marcus Sherels had an uncharacteristically bad return that saw him lose a few yards back to the Minnesota 18-yard line.

Keenum got the offense moving on the possession with a nice pass to Adam Thielen on third down to pick up 20 yards to the 38. Unfortunately, on the next play, Case Keenum threw the first interception by a Minnesota quarterback this season, as a pass intended for Michael Floyd was tipped and picked off by Damarious Randall and returned into Minnesota territory at the 38.

Green Bay appeared to potentially have a touchdown following the interception, but Ty Montgomery did not control the ball prior to getting into the end zone, so the ruling on the field was changed to an incomplete pass. As a result, the Packers were forced to call on Mason Crosby for a 26-yard field goal attempt. Crosby connected, cutting the Minnesota lead to 14-10 just after the two-minute warning.

Minnesota started their next drive at their own 25-yard line following a touchback on the kickoff. McKinnon started the drive with a nice 12-yard gain on a draw play. Keenum then found Laquon Treadwell for a big gain into Green Bay territory at the 43, and then found Thielen for nine more. McKinnon then carried the ball for a first down to the Green Bay 30. However, back-to-back 15-yard penalties, one on Mike Remmers for a face mask and one on Treadwell for a blindside block, made it 1st-and-40. Yes, first and forty. Since there aren’t a lot of plays in the playbook for 1st-and-40, the Vikings ran a few plays to put themselves into a 4th down situation at midfield. Keenum launched a Hail Mary, and it looked like Thielen had a shot at it, but it fell incomplete and that’s how we went into halftime.

The stats haven’t been great for the home team thus far. Keenum has completed 13-of-22 passes for 137 yards, one touchdown, and one interception through one half of play. On the rushing front, Jerick McKinnon has 11 carries for 54 yards and a score, but did have the costly fumble that led directly to a Green Bay touchdown. Latavius Murray has 20 yards on six carries, and Keenum has a 16-yard scramble to his credit.

In the receiving column, Thielen is leading the way with five catches for 55 yards. McKinnon has two grabs for 27 yards and a score, and Kyle Rudolph has three catches for 23 yards. Treadwell has one 18-yard reception, Murray has one catch for nine yards, and Michael Floyd (who started for the injured Stefon Diggs) has one catch for five yards.

As we go into halftime at U.S. Bank Stadium, the Minnesota Vikings hold a 14-10 lead over the Green Bay Packers, and will get the ball first coming out of the locker room at halftime. Can they hold on and win this big Border Battle and take over first place in the NFC North?

We’re scoreless after a quarter, folks.

To kick off their NFC North matchup against the Green Bay Packers, the Minnesota Vikings won the coin toss and chose to defer to the second half, putting the purple defense on the field first. Kai Forbath’s kickoff went into the end zone for a touchback, giving Aaron Rodgers and company the ball at their own 25 to start things off. Rodgers and the Packers’ offense couldn’t get anything going, and wound up going three and out. Justin Vogel came in to punt the ball away, and Marcus Sherels called for a fair catch at his own 22-yard line.

Case Keenum led the Minnesota offense out onto the field, and picked up a first down with a nice scramble of 16 yards to the 41. Latavius Murray then had a nice 10-yard run for another first down, this one into Green Bay territory. However, the drive stalled out at that spot, and Ryan Quigley came in to punt the ball away. The punt was fair caught by Trevor Davis at the Green Bay 17.

The Packers got a first down on their first play of the drive on a pass from Rodgers to Jordy Nelson for 10 yards. The Packers then got another first down when Tom Johnson jumped offside on a 3rd-and-4 to give Green Bay another fresh set of downs. On a second down play, Aaron Rodgers took a big shot from Anthony Barr and went down hard, and he came off the field for Brett Hundley. Hundley handed off to Aaron Jones, and the Packers came up short. Vogel punted it away, and Sherels called for a fair catch at the 15-yard line.

Minnesota got a first down to start their drive thanks to a defensive holding penalty on Blake Martinez while covering Adam Thielen. Another penalty for illegal contact gave the Vikings another first down to the 33-yard line. Keenum then found Adam Thielen for another first down to near midfield. Keenum then completed a huge pass to Jerick McKinnon, but the Vikings were called for being illegally downfield, resulting in a 5-yard penalty. The Vikings got some of it back, but the team couldn’t get another first down. Ryan Quigley came in to punt once again, and Trevor Davis called for the fair catch at the 18.

Hundley led the Packers offense out onto the field for their next drive, with Rodgers having been carted back to the locker room. (He’s questionable to return with a shoulder injury.) The Packers then had a 3rd-and-2, and Mackensie Alexander tipped a pass right into the hands of Xavier Rhodes for an interception! It’s Rhodes’ first pick of the year.

On the final play of the first quarter, Jerick McKinnon was dragged down by a horse collar tackle by Jake Ryan, so as we move to the second quarter, the Vikings are looking at 1st-and-10 from the Green Bay 27.

We are scoreless after the first quarter of play at U.S. Bank Stadium, ladies and gentlemen. Come join us for the second quarter of play!

Here are the ground rules for the Game Threads:

-Thou shalt not link illegal feeds of today's game, or I shall kick thy arse to the curb until the game is over. Do not promote then, do not mention them, do not even hint at them. Thou hast been warned.

-Thou shalt make an attempt to keep the swearing to a minimum. Understandable that it will slip occasionally, but do try to limit it. If you really feel the need to curse, use the spoiler tags to keep it covered up. We'll get the sentiment.

-Thou shalt not feed the trolls. Rather, thou shall simply point them out, and they shall be banished to the fires of Mordor. Or Wisconsin. Whichever we feel is more harsh at the time.

-Thou shalt not engage in racist, sexist, or other such insulting rhetoric. Somebody disagreeing with you does not make them racist or sexist. It means they disagree with you. Talk it out like adults.

-Thou shalt not bait the fans of other teams into trolling.

-Basically, thou shalt not be a jackwagon in the game thread.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it is game day at U.S. Bank Stadium, as the Minnesota Vikings are set to face off against their NFC North rivals, the Green Bay Packers. Minnesota can get themselves into first place in the NFC North (or at least a tie for it) with a victory this afternoon at home.

So, how can the Vikings go about making that happen?

1) Attack the Green Bay secondary - Even without Stefon Diggs this afternoon, the Vikings should be able to find some chunks of yardage against a Packers' back seven that is pretty banged up. If the Vikings can keep Case Keenum upright in this one, there should be chances to take shots down the field and get some points on the board.

2) Hit Aaron Rodgers frequently - As great a quarterback as Rodgers is, he can't do anything if he's looking at the U.S. Bank Stadium roof. Players like Everson Griffen and Danielle Hunter need to get their hands on Aaron Rodgers early and often to get the Green Bay offense off the field and give this team a chance to win.

3) No major mistakes - Against this Packers team, you can't afford to take stupid penalties and turn the ball over. In their three victories this season, the Vikings have zero turnovers, and that's the sort of performance that they need to put together today if they want to emerge victorious.

We're less than an hour away from kickoff in this one, ladies and gentlemen! We hope that you enjoy today's contest, and be sure to keep an eye out for a new thread at the start of each quarter.
