But it could have been worse

In one of the question and answer sessions he held with the Twin Cities media this week, Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said that wide receiver Stefon Diggs had already been punished for missing a practice this week. This morning, we got wind of what that punishment was.

According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, the Vikings fined Diggs “in excess of $200,000” for missing practices on both Monday (which wasn’t widely reported) and Wednesday (which was), as well as all mandatory meetings. Mortenson also says that the team has reiterated that Diggs is not going to be traded.

Diggs’ actions could have given the Vikings a window to cancel the $40 million in guarantees in his contract, similar to what the Oakland Raiders did in their tiff with Antonio Brown, but the team chose not to go down that path.
This was the Vikings’ last trip to New York. Hopefully Sunday will be better.

With a focus on the games in New Yo. . .er, New Jersey

It is once again time for us to take a look back at the history between the Minnesota Vikings and their upcoming opponent. This week, it’s the New York Giants, who the Vikings will take on at MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The history between these two teams goes back a significant amount of time, as they first matched up against each other back in 1964. They were also involved in trading Hall of Fame quarterback Fran Tarkenton. . .twice. . .with the Vikings even getting what wound up being a #1 overall pick from the Giants in exchange. (They turned that pick into another Hall of Famer, offensive tackle Ron Yary.) The Vikings have the head-to-head edge in the regular season matchups between these two teams, and that’s going to be our focus here.

As always, the numbers in this post are brought to you by the good folks from Pro Football Reference.

Total regular season games between the Vikings and Giants: 25

Current streak: Vikings, 2 wins

The last time these two teams got together, it was in prime time at U.S. Bank Stadium for Monday Night Football in 2016. The Vikings were in the midst of their season-starting five-game winning streak, and got off to an early lead against the Giants with a first quarter touchdown from Matt Asiata and a scoring pass from Sam Bradford to Kyle Rudolph in the second quarter. The Giants eventually got as close as 17-10, but a 4-yard touchdown by Jerick McKinnon provided the final margin as the Vikings took the contest by a final score of 24-10.

The last time the Vikings and Giants got together in New York was also for Monday Night Football. It was memorable. . .for the wrong reasons.

Yes, that was the infamous Josh Freeman game. Freeman, who had been with the team for a couple of weeks, was given the start by Leslie Frazier and, for some reason, allowed to throw the football 53 times. He completed 20 of them. That’s bad. The Vikings actually had a lead after the first quarter, thanks to an 86-yard punt return by Marcus Sherels, but those would be the Vikings’ only points of the night. The Giants steadily pulled away, and took a 23-7 victory.

Yes, it’s been 12 years since the Vikings last won in New York. Of course, the only time they’ve played in New York in that 12-year stretch was the Monday Night game we just talked about. Their last trip prior to that came on 25 November 2007, and the Vikings thumped the Giants in a big way. The Vikings’ defense harassed Eli Manning into four interceptions, three of which were returned for touchdowns. . .one by some guy that’s in prison right now, one by Dwight Smith, and one by Chad Greenway en route to a huge 41-17 victory at the Meadowlands.

That’s a quick look back at the history between the Giants and the Vikings, folks. Hopefully the Vikings can extend their historical advantage just a little further on Sunday afternoon.

If there was a surprise move for me so far, this would be it. I felt the back end of the offensive line depth came down to either Collins or Oli Udoh, and generally, the Vikings favor veterans over rookies.

That said, Collins has had a hard time staying healthy in Minnesota, even if he did flash some talent at both the guard and tackle spot. With Udoh performing well, and the general consensus being that he wouldn’t make it through waivers if he was released, if my theory is right they decided to keep Udoh and let Collins go.

Now, let’s see if they keep Udoh.

The kicking competition appears to be over.

The kicking situation for the Minnesota Vikings has been as sticky as ‘The Bonnie Situation’ potentially was for Winston Wolf in Pulp Fiction. But just as Mr. Wolf worked under a tight deadline to avoid disaster and save the day for everyone (well, except for Marvin, who got shot in the face), it appears the Vikings are cleaning up their kicking mess just as their own deadline looms.

Last night, in their 27-23 loss to the Buffalo Bills in the preseason finale, Dan Bailey seemed to have secured the kicking job with a solid night. Or did Kaare Vedvik lose it with another shaky performance? I don’t know, you tell me, as I can go either way on this one. However you view it, though, Bailey has really come on strong since Vedvik arrived, and has the inside track to be the Vikings kicker for 2019.

In the game, Bailey went 2/2 on field goal attempts, hitting from 54 and 43 yards. Vedvik went 1/2, missing from 37. He was good from 27 yards...from the left hash, ironically enough.

Because the Football Gods have a wicked sense of humor, that’s why.

Either way, after a shaky start to training camp for Bailey, the Vikings traded a fifth round pick to Baltimore for Vedvik, who only missed one field goal attempt with the Ravens in last year’s preseason. That’s when the switch seemed to flip for Bailey, and he’s been solid ever since. Vedvik, on the other hand, has struggled since putting on the new purple, missing his first three attempts in a Vikings uniform.

In the preseason Bailey has gone 3/3 on field goals, with his 54 yarder last night the longest, and 6/6 on extra point attempts. Vedvik, on the other hand, has struggled. He ended up hitting only one of four field goal attempts, but he was a perfect 4/4 on extra point attempts.

I don’t see the Vikings cutting Vedvik, though, not after giving up another fifth round pick for a special teams guy. I think what will happen is that the Vikes keep Vedvik as the maybe kickoff specialist and definitely as the punter, and they’ll release Matt Wile. Even though Vedvik had a punt of his returned for a touchdown during the Bills ridiculous comeback, after the game Mike Zimmer said that was a coverage issue, and not Vedvik’s fault.

So with Bailey and Vedvik on the roster, Vedvik becomes their Kicker Of The Future once Bailey’s contract expires at the end of 2019. Kicker Of The Future is very similar to Quarterback Of The Future, except he kicks, is a lot cheaper, but he will cause just as much consternation as a struggling young quarterback would.

I hope we don’t end up getting shot in the face, like poor Marvin.

The Vikings really gave it up in the fourth quarter

The Minnesota Vikings appeared to be on the verge of an undefeated preseason, but the Buffalo Bills weren’t having it.

Thanks to three fourth-quarter touchdowns, the Bills claimed their own undefeated mark in the preseason, defeating the Vikings by a final score of 27-23 at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

The Vikings, who sat 36 of their players on the evening, got on the board first behind starting quarterback Kyle Sloter. Sloter had a 23-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Dillon taken off the board by a holding penalty, but he persisted and found Ameer Abdullah for 15-yard score, with Kaare Vedvik connecting on the extra point to make the score 7-0 early in the first quarter.

From there, we got lots of field goals. First, former Vikings kicker Steven Hauschka connected on a 54-yarder to cut the score to 7-3. After missing a 37-yard attempt in the second quarter, Vedvik got another crack at things with less than a minute remaining in the half, connecting from 27 yards out to make the score 10-3 going into the locker room.

The Bills started the second half with a second 54-yard field goal, this one coming off of the foot of Chase McLaughlin to cut the Minnesota lead to four at 10-6. Not to be outdone, the Vikings attempted a 54-yard field goal. . .this one by incumbent Dan Bailey. . .and he split the uprights to push the margin back to seven at 13-6.

Late in the third quarter, rookie Jake Browning took over at quarterback, and he helped the Vikings tack on some more points, leading a scoring drive early in the fourth quarter. The drive ended with De’Angelo Henderson going over from three yards out, and the extra point from Bailey increased the lead to 20-6 with just over ten minutes left in regulation.

On the next drive, the Vikings got a big defensive highlight, as Karter Schult got to Bills’ quarterback Tyree Jackson and stripped the ball away from him, with Anree Saint-Amour recovering at the Buffalo 17.

The Vikings turned that into another field goal, as Bailey connected from 43 yards out, making the score 23-6.

On the ensuing drive, the Vikings’ defense gave up their first touchdown since the fourth quarter of the New Orleans game back in Week 1. It came on a bit of a freak play, as Reshard Cliett stripped Jackson of the ball. It went forward, into the end zone, where it was recovered by Victor Bolden for a Buffalo touchdown. McLaughlin connected on the extra point, and with just under four minutes left the score went to 23-13.

The Vikings continued to make it interesting, as they went three-and-out on their next drive, and decided to give Vedvik a try at punting the ball. He booted the ball away, and it went to the Bills’ Marcus Murphy. Murphy then proceeded to take the punt back 79 yards for a touchdown. With the extra point, the Bills were back to within a field goal at 23-20.

Tyree Jackson pushed his team down the field, and capped the drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass to rookie David Sills with just eight seconds remaining. The extra point gave the Bills the final margin of victory at 27-23.

For the Vikings, Kyle Sloter played well into the third quarter, finishing his night completing 16-of-24 passes for 163 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Jake Browning came in to play the final quarter-plus, and completed 8-of-10 passes, but for just 46 yards and an interception on the game’s final play.

De’Angelo Henderson wound up leading the Vikings in rushing, picking up 59 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. The leading receiver was tight end Brandon Dillon, who had 48 yards on five catches.

The Vikings fall to 3-1 in the preseason with the loss, and will open the 2019 regular season on Sunday, 9 September, when they host the Atlanta Falcons at U.S. Bank Stadium. The Bills cap their preseason with a perfect 4-0 mark, and will open their season by traveling to take on the New York Jets in Week 1.

One half of football that doesn’t count remains

We’re at halftime at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, New York, and the Minnesota Vikings lead the Buffalo Bills by a score of 10-3.

The Vikings got the football first, and got a nice 17-yard run by Mike Boone and a 14-yard pass from Kyle Sloter to Laquon Treadwell to move into Buffalo territory, but the drive stalled out. Matt Wile came on for the first punt of the evening, dropping it at the Bills’ 8-yard line. The Vikings’ defense got a three-and-out to start the game, and a bad punt from the Bills gave the purple a start in Buffalo territory for their second drive.

Minnesota had a 23-yard touchdown pass from Sloter to Brandon Dillon taken off the board by a holding penalty on Storm Norton, but the Vikings got into the end zone anyway, courtesy of a 15-yard pass from Sloter to Ameer Abdullah! Kaare Vedvik handled the first extra point of the evening, and he split the uprights to give the Vikings a 7-0 lead.

On their next drive, the Vikings got deep into Buffalo territory once again, but had to settle for a field goal attempt from Vedvik. His 37-yard attempt was wide right. . .way wide right.

After the Vikings’ defense forced their second three-and-out, Sloter threw his first ever NFL interception, as he was picked off by Lafayette Pitts near midfield. The Bills went three-and-out again, however, and the Vikings pushed down the field again. Once again their drive stalled, and the Vikings brought on Vedvik for another field goal attempt, this one another 27 yarder.

And he made it. HE MADE IT, Y’ALL!

That gave the Vikings a 10-3 lead, and that’s how we go into the locker room at halftime.

Sloter had a solid first half of football, completing 15-of-22 attempts for 157 yards, one touchdown, and an interception. Mike Boone’s night appears to be over, as he carried the ball six times for 19 yards before giving way to De’Angelo Henderson.

The Vikings’ defense has been solid as well, limiting the Bills to just 105 total yards, and 45 yards passing. They have not yet sacked rookie quarterback Tyree Jackson, but the Bills haven’t done a whole lot to move the ball outside of one drive.

We have just one half of action remaining in the preseason, folks, and the Vikings lead the Bills in Buffalo by a score of 10-3. Come join us for the last half of preseason action in 2019!

The last preseason game starts shortly!

Less than one hour from now, the final game of the 2019 NFL preseason will kick off, as the Minnesota Vikings and the Buffalo Bills will take the field at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park. The starters aren’t going to play in this one, but that doesn’t mean that there won’t be some interesting things happening this evening.

Here’s everything you need to know about tonight’s contest.

Time: Thursday, 29 August, 6:00 PM Central

Location: Ralph Wilson Stadium, Orchard Park, New York

Television coverage: KSTP-9 in the Twin Cities, and a host of other local affiliates throughout the Upper Midwest that you can see right here. The NFL Network replay will start at 3:00 AM Central time on Friday, or approximately five hours after the live airing concludes.

Radio Coverage: Vikings Radio Network, SiriusXM App Channel 819

Line: Nope

Prediction: The score really doesn’t make any difference, although a 4-0 preseason would be sort of cool, I guess.

Three keys

1) No significant injuries - While we know that the starters aren’t going to play tonight, but there are still going to be some key backups for the Vikings that will play at least a little bit. Hopefully the Vikings can get out of this one healthy.

2) Can we get the damn kicking situation figured out, please? - We’re about 48 hours away from the final roster cutdowns, and we still don’t know who’s going to be handling the majority of the special teams duties for this team. Austin Cutting is set as the long snapper, but we still don’t know who’s going to kick, punt, and hold for this team. Where does Kaare Vedvik fit into things? Will either Matt Wile or Dan Bailey be unemployed in two days? Will Chad Beebe continue to serve as the holder? It’s way too late in the preseason to not have the answers to these questions, and hopefully they’ll get answered tonight.

3) Will the Vikings keep three quarterbacks? - It would appear that Kyle Sloter is going to get the majority of the snaps for the Vikings tonight, and he’s been one of the hot topics of conversation surrounding this team all preseason. Can Sloter make a strong enough case tonight to force the Vikings to keep three quarterbacks on the roster?

The preseason ends on Thursday

In less than 24 hours, we’re going to be talking about everything we saw in the final preseason game for the Minnesota Vikings, as they travel to upstate New York to take on the Buffalo Bills. We’re not going to see the starters in this contest, but we are going to see a lot of guys that are fighting for spots at the bottom of the depth chart making their final cases. The roster cutdown to 53 is Saturday at 3:00 PM Central, so the players that will be playing are going to do everything they can to prove they belong with the big club or, at the very least, the practice squad.

So, how can you keep track of all the action?

Television Info

This game is going to be kicking off a little earlier because it’s happening out east, so kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM Central time. The flagship station for Vikings preseason football, KSTP-9 in the Twin Cities, will be carrying this one, as will the following local network affiliates:

KMSP (FOX/9 - Minneapolis, MN)

WDIO (ABC/10-13 - Duluth, MN)

KETV (ABC/7 - Omaha, NE)

If you’re near one of the following cities, you’ll be able to catch the game with the Bills’ announcing team, which is the pairing of Andrew Catalon and Steve Tasker.

WKBW (ABC/7 - Buffalo, NY)

WROC (CBS/8 - Rochester, NY)

If you can’t see the live broadcast of this one, you’ll want to set your alarm clock or DVR so that you can catch the re-broadcast on the NFL Network at 3:00 AM Central on Friday.

Radio Info

If radio is your preferred medium, you can listen to the game via the Vikings Radio Network. Just click on the link there to find the affiliate in your area.

If you’re going to be using satellite radio. . .well, unfortunately, you’re out of luck, as it doesn’t appear that Sirius or XM is going to be carrying the Vikings’ feed for this one. You can find the Bills feed on Channel 83 on both Sirius and XM. Of course, if you’re using the SiriusXM app, the Vikings have a permanent home there on Channel 819.

Referee Info

Football Zebras informs us that the officiating crew for Thursday’s game in Buffalo will be headed up by Shawn Smith. Smith is in his second year as a head referee, and the Vikings saw him once last year, as his crew handled the Vikings’ 37-17 victory over the New York Jets.

Weather Info

This is the only Vikings’ preseason game that had the potential to be affected by weather, and it looks like the winds could be a bit of a factor. Weather Underground is showing temperatures at kickoff time in the low 70s, but the winds will be coming out of the southwest at between 15 and 20 miles/hour, so it’s going to be a little breezy in Orchard Park.

Streaming Info

It’s still “free trial” season for NFL Game Pass, so if you can’t view the game any other way, that’s always an option. You could also look into Fubo.tv.

As far as other streams are concerned, do NOT. . .and I mean not in any way, shape, or form. . .promote illegal streaming sites on The Daily Norseman. Not in the comments, not in the FanPosts, not in the FanShots, not in the Game Thread, not anywhere. Don’t even hint at them. Trust me on this. If you’re that determined to watch the game via an illegal stream, do a Google search and find it on your own. And feel free to not blame us for any ill effects your computer or device might suffer as a result.

That should be everything you need to know for Thursday night when the Vikings and the Bills close out the preseason at Ralph Wilson Stadium. We’ll have our Open Thread up and running before kickoff, and we hope that a lot of you will join us here for all the action!
