Looking back at the most important plays from the 20-7 win over Detroit.

Let’s be honest: the Vikings’ 20-7 victory over the hapless Lions on Sunday was pretty boring.

There were 13 punts and only five scoring drives. The two teams combined for a paltry 4.06 yards per play. Walt Anderson’s notoriously flag-happy crew called twelve accepted penalties. The Lions didn’t even have their usual lead to blow! Sunday was the first game of the 2019 season where the 3-9-1 Lions didn’t have the lead at some point. The Vikings built a decent first half lead and then kept Detroit at arm’s length like an older sibling letting their little brother harmlessly flail away at them. David Blough looked every bit of the third-string quarterback that he is and the Lions never seriously threatened to make it a contest. The only intriguing facet of the final 30 minutes was whether Detroit was going to cover the spread. (Most books had the line at 13, which means that even the gambling was boring because it was a push.) A win is a win is a win, but Sunday’s win was a special kind of snooze fest.

Let’s be honest: that boring 20-7 victory over the hapless Lions on Sunday may have been just what this team needed to start the stretch run. The past four Vikings games were heart-pounding battles that game down to the final moments. Players and fans alike have had their nerves ground to a pulp since the calendar turned to November. With three crucial games remaining and realistic postseason scenarios that range from a first round bye to missing the playoffs altogether, a ho-hum win at home should be A-OK for the Vikings faithful.

Let’s be honest: it might be pretty difficult to cobble together five big plays from Sunday. But that’s what we do in this space the day after each game, so we’ll forge ahead and scrounge for significance.

Play 1: Vikings ball, 1st & goal at the Detroit 9. First quarter, 5:52 remaining. K.Cousins pass short right to O.Johnson for 9 yards, TOUCHDOWN.

Each defense held firm through the first three drives of the game. The Minnesota defense got two much-needed three and outs to start the contest on either side of the stalled opening Vikings drive. The Vikings got the ball for the second time with less than five minutes gone and marched 82 yards for the game’s opening score.

Minnesota didn’t even face a third down on their 10-play drive that featured two penalties and two injuries for the Lions defense. Olabisi Johnson made a nice leaping grab on a Kirk Cousins pass to the end zone and the Vikings were in business.

The Lions finally started moving the ball and found their way to Minnesota territory for the first time on the next drive. But a defensive star made sure it didn’t end in points.

Play 2: Lions ball, 3rd & 8 at the Minnesota 40. First quarter, 2:33 remaining. (Shotgun) D.Blough sacked at DET 46 for -14 yards (D.Hunter).

Danielle Hunter had already tallied a sack on the third play of the game. He doubled his fun on this crucial third down late in the first quarter.

Hunter breezed past the chip block and Blough ran directly into his path for a 14-yard loss to force a punt in a one-possession game. The Lions’ backup certainly didn’t do himself any favors on some of Detroit’s negative plays, but it was nice to see the Minnesota defense step up after some rough recent performances.

The Vikings had the ball for most of the first ten minutes of the second quarter, running 19 plays to the Lions’ three after Hunter’s second sack. However, they were only able to muster three points out of the two drives. Minnesota punted from the Detroit 39 after a ten-play drive to start the second quarter. The Vikings had to settle for a Dan Bailey field goal after a false start penalty prevented them from going for it on 4th & 1 deep in Lions territory. The Lions had done next to nothing for most of the first half, yet they were trailing by only ten and driving late in the second quarter with a chance to make it a one-score game.

Play 3: Lions ball, 3rd & 2 at the Minnesota 15. Second quarter, 1:16 remaining. (Shotgun) D.Blough sacked at MIN 27 for -12 yards (D.Hunter).

Hunter the hat trick hero.

Blough didn’t find anything right away on the third down pass—Eric Kendricks read his eyes and stepped in front of Kenny Golladay in the middle—so he scrambled out to buy some time with Hunter in pursuit. The rookie quarterback had time to throw the ball away as Hunter and Linval Joseph were in pursuit, but instead took the sack for a loss of twelve yards. A 33-yard chip shot attempt became a more difficult 45-yard attempt due to the sack.

Matt Prater is usually automatic indoors, but he pushed the attempt wide right.

Instead of possibly going into halftime at 10-3, the Vikings had just over a minute and two timeouts to try and get points of their own before the break.

And that’s just what they did.

Play 4: Vikings ball, 1st & 10 at the Detroit 47. Second quarter, 0:37 remaining. (Shotgun) K.Cousins pass deep right to S.Diggs pushed ob at DET 3 for 44 yards (D.Slay).

The Vikings called their second timeout with 37 seconds remaining after Stefon Diggs got them just across midfield with a third down grab. The next play was a textbook Diggs deep catch.

Cousins delivered a perfect pass down the right sideline, and Diggs showed why he’s such a dangerous deep threat. With Darius Slay in close coverage, Diggs left some space along the sideline and stepped out laterally right before the ball arrived to create separation. It’s one of the many subtle things that puts Diggs among the very best route runners in the NFL.

Slay later argued that Diggs pushed off right before the ball arrived, but no offensive pass interference was called. Two plays later, Dalvin Cook waltzed in for a touchdown and the Vikings had a commanding 17-0 lead at the half.

The first two quarters weren’t exactly thrilling, but they were an adrenaline rush compared to the third. The second half started with five straight punts before the Vikings came up with the first takeaway of the day.

Play 5: Lions ball, 1st & 10 at the Detroit 43. Third quarter, 4:33 remaining. D.Blough pass deep middle intended for K.Golladay INTERCEPTED by H.Smith [E.Griffen] at MIN 36. H.Smith to MIN 36 for no gain (K.Golladay). MIN-X.Rhodes was injured during the play.

Number 22 now has 22 career interceptions.

Harrison Smith leaped up to snag Blough’s errant pass intended for Golladay. Xavier Rhodes was collateral damage and didn’t return to the game after colliding with Smith on the play. Rhodes and Mike Hughes played only 29 snaps each, which allowed Holton Hill to get a season-high 27 snaps. Before Sunday, Hill had played only 15 defensive snaps since returning from his eight-game suspension.

The Vikings took the remainder of the third quarter with their ensuing drive, resulting on a 50-yard Bailey field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter. The Lions finally got on the board with a Golladay touchdown just before the two-minute warning, but most of the final quarter was simply playing out the stretch. Again, this one won’t wind up on any “game of the year” lists, but the Vikings accomplished the task at hand and head to Los Angeles with a 9-4 record.

The process was not respected, and I am not sitting up straight

In last week’s SMR I lamented about being on the road, and how you just always feel a bit out of sync. You get out of your routine, sleeping in a soulless hotel room, driving a rental car, and eating restaurant food. It gets to be a drag. But at some point you get to go home and you can get back into your routine.

The first normal thing you experience is getting back in your truck and driving home. You don’t need to dial up the GPS to figure out where the hell you’re going, you go right to your radio station, and your truck syncs up with the phone so you can bang your music as loud as you want if you feel like going that route. Once you get in the front door, you dump all your dirty clothes in the hamper, throw on some comfy sweats because business casual on the road just sucks...and all is right with the world. You get to sit in your chair, you don’t need to figure what damn channel ESPN is so you can watch the Vikings game, and there’s a nice cold beer in the refrigerator with your name on it.

Ahhhhhhhhh, home.

And that’s kind of how I thought the Vikings game went today against Detroit. They got home from the road, got comfortable, and got back in to their familiar groove. Yeah, it may be boring sometimes, but sometimes you need boring to balance out the hectic.

Nothing beats coming Home, Sweet Home, am I right, Mötley Crüe?

Stefon Diggs, WR: Diggs was the go to guy for Kirk Cousins today, and his beautiful, 44 yard sideline grab right before halftime set up a short touchdown run by Dalvin Cook that put the Vikes up 17-0. He didn’t score a touchdown, but he was the team’s leading receiver today, hauling in six catches for 92 yards. On the season, he’s up to 997 yards, and will end up with his second straight 1,000 yard season with his first catch next week. Oh, and we’ll come back to the 44 yarder later, but just appreciate this toe drag catch against Darius Slay, Jr., one of the best CB’s in the game:

Harrison Smith, S: Smith had a really solid day. He had two passes defended, one tackle for loss, and had another interception. The pick came late in the third quarter, set the Vikings up with a short field, and Minnesota converted Bailey’s 50 yard field goal to push the lead to 20-0.

Dan Bailey, K: A week after missing an extra point, Bailey was nails today. He hit both his extra points and made both field goal attempts, and one of those was a 50 yarder he drilled.

Danielle Hunter, DE: Hunter was in full beast mode today. He set the tone on defense with a sack on the first series, which was record setting:

He had three sacks total, and the third was crippling for Detroit. It killed a 14 play drive, and knocked them out of gimme field goal range. It was third and two from the Vikings 12, but Hunter got to Blough for a 12 yard loss, making the field goal attempt from Matt Prater 45 yards instead of 29. Prater wound up and threw the best knuckleball I’ve ever seen, something that would baffle Mike Trout and buckle his knees. Unfortunately for Prater, though, he was kicking a football, not throwing a baseball, and it sailed wide right.

No, you read that right: Matt Prater missed a field goal against the Vikings.

The offensive line: The Vikes offensive line really seems to be gelling and coming together, and that’s a real positive sign heading into the final three games. I thought Cousins had all kinds of time to throw the ball today. Just look at the protection on the VIkings first score, the Bisi Johnson TD catch:

That’s a textbook pocket, and that’s what the o-line did most of the afternoon. They opened enough daylight for the Vikings run game to be decent, and only gave up one sack. I’m very encouraged with this unit moving forward, and a particular shout out to Garrett Bradbury and Pat Elflein, who are really coming on strong.

Solid Investments

Mike Hughes, CB/PR: After a few rough games, I thought Hughes played pretty well, both as a cornerback and on punt returns. He had a couple nice punt returns and a pass breakup on the day.

Kirk Cousins, QB: Cousins wasn’t spectacular today, but he was efficient and made a couple spectacular throws. He ended the afternoon 24/30 for 242 yards, one touchdown, and most importantly, no turnovers. For a guy that’s been rightfully criticized for his turnover problem, he’s only thrown four interceptions and lost three fumbles all season. And heck, his last two picks were throws that literally bounced off the hands of intended receivers. You can’t get much better than that, kids.

Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison, RB1 and RB2: Cook and Mattison combined for 108 yards rushing, and the Vikings did a good job of spelling Cook with Mattison to reduce wear and tear on Cook for the stretch run. Neither guy was extra special today, but they got the job done and moved the chains. Mattison had the highlight of the day between the two though:

Junk Bonds

None: I’m having a hard time coming up with someone who had a game so bad it was a junk bond. So I’m going to enjoy the win.

Buy/Sell

Buy: The defensive effort today. I was kind of concerned heading into this game. Rookie David Blough put over 280 yards passing on the Bears defense last week, and Mike Zimmer has a maddening habit of playing a fairly vanilla defense to start a game, allowing young QB’s like Brandon Allen of the Broncos to light up the VIkes like a Christmas tree. Today, the defense set the tone, blitzing and hurrying Blough from the first series, and completely stonewalling a top 10 NFL offense until the game was well decided.

Sell: Offensive penalty on 4th and 1 from the Lions four. In the second quarter the Vikings had a nice drive going, moving from their 35 to the Detroit four. On 4th and one, Mike Zimmer decided to go for it, and Dalvin Cook appeared to get two yards and a first down, setting up a first and goal. But the offense wasn’t set, they were called for an illegal procedure penalty, and Minnesota had to settle for a field goal. Against a better team on a different day, that could have been potentially huge.

Buy: Two minute drive to end the half. After the Prater missed knuckleball, the Vikes took over on their 35 with 1:06 and two timeouts left before halftime. What ensued is what I would argue might be the best two minute drive of the Zimmer era. A combination of great play calling, exceptional use of timeouts, and perfect execution on a big play got the Vikings close to the end zone:

Again, note the great protection for Cousins. It was a great throw, great catch, and two plays later Dalvin Cook walked in, giving Minnesota a 17-0 lead into the locker room.

Sell: Not stepping on the gas pedal to open the second half. Yet, the Vikings didn’t really do anything with that momentum coming out of the half. It seemed like Minnesota went into ‘kill the clock mode’ as opposed to ‘go for the throat’ mode, and part of me understands it. You have a big lead, the Lions have shown zero life on offense, and Minnesota was in complete control of the game. Yet we’ve seen first hand how tenuous 17...or 20...point leads can be.

A weird bounce, a turnover, or a busted play could completely turn the game around, and now what was a game you had in the bag is very much NOT in the bag. For example, on the Vikes first drive, a makeable third and five went to waste when Cousins threw a deep, low percentage pass to Alexander Hollins. Punt. On their second drive, the third and seven call was a run to the left by Dalvin Cook that went for no gain. Punt. The defense remained stout throughout, and the Lions got nothing going until the game was pretty much over, so it wasn’t a big deal. Still, for as much as Mike Zimmer preaches the importance of closing the first half with points and bookending that with points to open the second half, the lack of urgency there was weird.

Buy: Benching Rhodes to start the game. I like the move to bench Xavier Rhodes early in the game. The stat sheet says Rhodes started, but it looked like Mike Hughes started in his place, and played a good part of the first half. Rhodes did play, and it seemed like he responded. I liked it because it sent a message to the defense that they needed to play better, and it appears that the defense got the message loud and clear, as they played as well as they have in two months.

Sell: Walt Coleman’s officiating crew. What a joke of a crew. Their inability to correctly call the most basic of plays is balanced out by their penchant for throwing a flag just as the game is getting into a rhythm. Ticky tack penalties, a blown call that caused Zimmer to throw a challenge flag to overturn, when the side judge was literally looking at the drop happen? It was just a terribly called game.

Buy: This was a boring game. No, it won’t be the NFL Game of the Week, and yeah, it was kind of a snoozefest, but it’s a win. And it’s nine wins for the Vikings on the year, and one game closer to a playoff spot. I’ll happily take it.

Sell: Exciting losses are better. I would rather watch a boring win than sit through an exciting loss, like we saw happen between the 49ers and Saints.

And, again, it has to do with his age

Earlier this year, Minnesota Vikings defensive end Danielle Hunter put his name into the NFL record books by collecting more quarterback sacks before the age of 25 than any defender in NFL history. On Sunday, during the Vikings’ 20-7 victory over the Detroit Lions, Hunter set another record for sacks, and this one is pretty impressive, too.

With his first sack of David Blough on Sunday afternoon, Hunter became the youngest player in NFL history to collect 50 quarterback sacks.

(Incidentally, he was also the youngest to reach 51 and 52 career sacks, too.)

Hunter is currently 25 years and 40 days old. He broke the record that was held by Robert Quinn, who recorded his 50th sack at the age of 25 years and 167 days. When Hunter set the record for sacks before the age of 25, it was Quinn’s record that was broken then, too.

With his three sacks on the day, Hunter now has 12.5 for the season and a total of 52.5 for his career.

Congratulations to Danielle Hunter on putting himself into the record books once again!

It wasn’t a blowout, but it didn’t need to be

The Minnesota Vikings played the first of their three NFC North divisional matchups to finish the season at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday, playing host to the 3-8-1 Detroit Lions. It looked on paper to be a blowout, but it turned out just to be a regular, ordinary win.

Paced by an outstanding defensive performance that harassed rookie quarterback David Blough all day, the Vikings got everything they needed from their offense to defeat the Lions by a final score of 20-7.

The Vikings got on the board first, courtesy of a nine-yard touchdown pass from Kirk Cousins to rookie Olabisi Johnson, with Dan Bailey’s extra point making the score 7-0 early. Johnson’s first NFL touchdown came against the Lions in Week 7, and the nine-yard reception was his second.

That was all of the scoring for the first quarter of play, as the Vikings’ defense put the clamps on rookie quarterback David Blough and the Detroit offense. Midway through the second quarter, the Vikings pushed themselves to a 4th-and-1 at the Detroit 4-yard line, and appeared to get the first down on a Dalvin Cook run, but Garrett Bradbury was whistled for a false start.
After a missed field goal from Matt Prater, the Vikings added to their lead before the half.
The third quarter was relatively quiet until the Vikings generated the game’s first turnover, as Harrison Smith intercepted David Blough. Minnesota was able to turn that drive into more points, as Dan Bailey hit a 50-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter to push the Minnesota advantage to 20-0.

Despite being down by twenty points in the fourth quarter, the Lions showed a pretty surprising lack of urgency until the clock got down to about five minutes left in the game. Then they went to a no-huddle offense and pushed into Minnesota territory, finally capping the drive with their only points of the day just before the two-minute warning. Blough managed to find Kenny Golladay for a 10-yard score on a 4th-and-5 play to deny the Vikings’ defense a shutout on the afternoon, with Matt Prater’s extra point making the score 20-7.

The Vikings recovered the ensuing onside kick, but the Lions got the ball back and put together a drive into Minnesota territory once again. Their last-ditch attempt to get into the end zone again was thwarted, however, by an interception in the end zone by Andrew Sendejo. The Vikings went into the victory formation and walked out with their ninth win of the season.

Kirk Cousins had an efficient performance, completing 24-of-30 passes for 242 yards and a touchdown. He completed passes to ten different receivers. . .eleven if you count a deflected pass that wound up in the hands of rookie center Garrett Bradbury. Stefon Diggs led the way with six receptions for 92 yards.

The run game didn’t get a whole lot going on the afternoon, as Dalvin Cook picked up 62 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. Alexander Mattison had a solid performance in relief, carrying the ball 14 times for 46 yards.

The Vikings move their record to 9-4 on the season, and will play their final road game of the 2019 regular season next Sunday, hitting the road to take on the Los Angeles Chargers. The Lions fall to 3-9-1 on the year, and will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next Sunday.

It’s still a 17-0 lead for the purple

There’s just one quarter left from U.S. Bank Stadium, and the Minnesota Vikings still hold a 17-0 lead over the Detroit Lions.

The Vikings got the ball coming out of the locker room, but were forced into a three-and-out by the Lions’ defense. The Vikings’ defense responded with a three-and-out of their own. To be honest, there really wasn’t a whole lot of offense to speak of for the first half of the third quarter, as each team punted twice.

The most excitement that the early part of the quarter brought us was a deflected pass that somehow wound up in the hands of center Garrett Bradbury for a loss of yards. (Not intentionally, mind you.) Technically, he became the 11th different Viking to catch a pass from Kirk Cousins this afternoon, which is. . .something, I guess.

Following the punt after the Bradbury “completion,” the Vikings forced the first turnover of the game, as David Blough was intercepted by Harrison Smith at the Minnesota 36!

As we move to the fourth quarter, the Minnesota offense had picked up some yardage, but are currently looking at a 4th-and-7 from the Detroit 32, which likely means Dan Bailey will open the fourth quarter with a field goal attempt.

Fifteen minutes left from U.S. Bank Stadium, folks, and the Minnesota Vikings have a 17-0 lead over the Detroit Lions. Hang out for the rest of the game and see if the Vikings move to 9-4.

It’s now a three-score lead for the good guys

We’re at the half at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, and the Minnesota Vikings lead the Detroit Lions by a score of 17-0.

The Vikings started the second quarter with the ball, and managed to push all the way down to the Detroit 39. Rather than attempt a 56-yard field goal on 4th-and-8, the Vikings punted the ball away. Fortunately, the Vikings’ defense was able to force another three-and-out from David Blough and company as Bo Scarborough was denied on a 3rd-and-1 carry by Shamar Stephen and Stephen Weatherly.

Minnesota took over at their own 35-yard line for their next possession, and quickly got into Detroit territory once again. The drive got all the way to the Detroit 4-yard line, where the Vikings faced a 4th-and-1 after C.J. Ham was denied on 3rd-and-1. The Vikings elected to go for it, and appeared to have a first down. . .but Garrett Bradbury was called for a false start to make it 4th-and-6. The Vikings then elected to call on Dan Bailey, and he connected from 27 yards out to extend the Minnesota lead to 10-0.

Detroit then managed to get a drive into Minnesota territory for the second time, and received aid from several Vikings’ defensive penalties. At the two-minute warning, the Lions were at the Minnesota 29-yard line, and wound up picking up slightly more yardage before Danielle Hunter made his presence felt again. He sacked Blough for a huge 12-yard loss, and the Lions were forced to bring on Matt Prater for a 45-yard field goal attempt. . .that he pushed wide to the right! That gave the Vikings the ball at their own 35-yard line with just over a minute left in the half.

Minnesota took advantage, courtesy of a 3-yard touchdown run from Dalvin Cook. The run was set up by a huge 44-yard pass from Cousins to Diggs that nearly went for the score by itself. Dan Bailey added the extra point, and the Vikings extended their lead to 17-0.

The good guys lead after a quarter at U.S. Bank Stadium

We’re through one quarter of play at U.S. Bank Stadium, and your Minnesota Vikings lead the Detroit Lions by a score of 7-0.

The Vikings won the toss and chose to defer to the second half, giving the visitors the football first. The first drive was outstanding for the defense, with two deflected passes (one by Harrison Smith and one by Shamar Stephen) followed by a sack of David Blough by Danielle Hunter. That sack made Hunter the youngest player in NFL history to accumulate 50 sacks.

Minnesota got into Detroit territory on their first possession, but wound up having to punt. After forcing another three-and-out from the Lions’ offense, the Vikings once again pushed into Lions’ territory, and got the first points of the game on the board. The Vikings got to first-and-goal courtesy of a personal foul penalty on Lions’ rookie linebacker Jahlani Tavai, and from there Kirk Cousins found Olabisi Johnson for a nine-yard touchdown! Dan Bailey connected on the extra point, and the Vikings led 7-0 with just under six minutes left in the quarter.

Detroit did manage to push into Minnesota territory on their next possession, but it was snuffed out by another sack by Hunter, this time dropping Blough for a huge 14-yard loss to force another punt. As we move to the second quarter, the Vikings are looking at a 3rd-and-4 from their ow 34-yard line.

We’re through the first quarter of play at U.S. Bank Stadium, and your Minnesota Vikings lead the Detroit Lions by a score of 7-0. Come join us for the second quarter!

Let’s get back to it, folks!

It seems like this has been the longest “short week” ever, doesn’t it? It’s officially over now, though, as we’re less than an hour away from kickoff of Week 14 in the National Football League, featuring the Detroit Lions coming to U.S. Bank Stadium to take on your Minnesota Vikings in an NFC North showdown.

Here’s everything you need to know about today’s game.

Date and Time: Sunday, 8 December, 2019, noon Central time

Location: U.S. Bank Stadium, Minneapolis, Minnesota

Television coverage: KSTP-9 in the Twin Cities, FOX affiliates around the country, DirecTV Channel 712

Chris’ Prediction: Vikings 34, Lions 17

Three Keys

1) Get after David Blough early and often - Just like the last time the Vikings played at home, a team is coming in as a double-digit underdog with a rookie quarterback making his first road start. I would love to see the Vikings take a much different tack with Blough. . .who looked alright on Thanksgiving. . .than they did in that game and just blitz him from every angle all the time. There’s no reason to lay back and give him time to pick you apart. Get after this kid and make him regret his life choices.

2) Get off to a fast start - The Lions’ defense is bad. They’re terrible against the pass and they’re not exactly great against the run. In the last game between these two teams, the Vikings got down early and had to battle back. This time, they need to be the aggressors, even if that means not deferring on the coin toss if you win and just stuffing it down Detroit’s throat. You’re the better team, and you’re in your house. . .act like it.

3) Get Monday night in the rear view mirror - The Vikings lost a tough one on Monday night, and now they have a stretch where they play all of their division opponents at home over the next four weeks. While the odds are good that they’re going to make the postseason, they aren’t there yet, and they need to keep that in mind as they take the field this afternoon.

That should be all of the information you need for this one, folks. Remember, as always, we put up a new Open Thread at the start of each quarter, so keep your eyes open and move the discussion accordingly.

With that, let’s all meet up here again in about three hours or so to celebrate the Vikings moving to 9-4, shall we?
