Really, what else can be said?

In Week 13, the Minnesota Vikings had a game that they entered as a double-digit favorite against a Jacksonville Jaguars team that had lost 10 straight games. On paper, it looked like an easy victory.

But that’s not the Vikings way.

Despite generating five turnovers on defense, the Vikings needed overtime to put away one of the NFL’s worst teams, eventually prevailing by a final score of 27-24 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

The visiting team got on the board first in this one, as they went down the field after the opening kickoff and got a 28-yard touchdown pass from Mike Glennon to rookie Laviska Shenault Jr. that was deflected by Kris Boyd into the receiver’s hands. A missed extra point from former Viking Chase McLaughlin left the lead at 6-0.

After the Vikings did nothing on their first possession, McLaughlin added to the Jacksonville lead with a 22-yard field goal to make the score 9-0. It looked like they might be on the way to adding more points midway through the second quarter, but rookie Cameron Dantzler got his first NFL interception by taking the ball away from a Jaguars’ wide receiver to stop the drive.

Minnesota took advantage of the turnover, getting into the end zone on a 3-yard pass from Kirk Cousins to Adam Thielen. Dan Bailey, returning the earlier Jaguars’ favor, missed the extra point, but the lead was still cut to 9-6.

Minnesota got the ball to start the second half, but it didn’t matter much, as Cousins’ first pass attempt of the half was intercepted by Jacksonville linebacker Joe Schobert and returned 43 yards for a defensive touchdown. The extra point from McLaughlin gave the visitors a 10-point lead at 16-6.

Cousins shook off the pick-six on the next possession, as the Vikings got into the end zone behind. . .C.J. Ham? Yes, the fullback caught a short pass from Cousins and rambled into the end zone for the score. Dan Bailey connected on the extra point, and the deficit was back to three at 16-13.

After forcing a Jaguars punt, the Vikings went on an 8-play, 90-yard drive to take their first lead of the day. The drive ended with a 20-yard pass from Cousins to Justin Jefferson for the score, a catch that gave the rookie over 1,000 yards receiving on the season. Unfortunately, Dan Bailey missed another extra point, but the Vikings still had the lead at 19-16.

The Vikings’ defense then generated another turnover, as Jordan Brailford force Glennon to fumble the ball away and fell on the ball in Jacksonville territory. It looked like the Vikings were poised to add more, as the first play of the fourth quarter was a first-and-goal from inside the Jaguars’ 1-yard line, but Dalvin Cook fumbled on the exchange with Kirk Cousins and the Jaguars recovered, leaving the lead at three.

The Vikings then got some points from their defense, as Brailford combined with Ifeadi Odenigbo to sack Glennon in the end zone for a safety and two more points for Minnesota, extending the lead to 21-16 early in the fourth quarter.

The Vikings then got another takeaway courtesy of Cameron Dantzler, as he stripped away a reception by Chris Conley and got the recovery to stop another Jacksonville drive. That drive resulted in a field goal for Dan Bailey, a 48-yarder that pushed the lead to eight at 24-16 with just under four minutes remaining in regulation.

With just over a minute remaining, the Jaguars got into the end zone again behind rookie running back James Robinson, who went over from a yard out to make the score 24-24. The Jaguars were then forced to go for the two-point conversion, and Glennon found Collin Johnson to tie the game at 24-24 with 1:08 remaining.

The Vikings got into position for Bailey to attempt a 51-yard field goal to win it in regulation, but he pushed the attempt wide to the left and the game went to overtime.

After the Vikings punted it away to start overtime, they got their fifth turnover of the day as Harrison Smith got another interception of Mike Glennon to give the Vikings the ball in Jacksonville territory.

After a healthy dose of Dalvin Cook, the Vikings got Bailey into position for a 23-yard field goal attempt, and he put it through the uprights to give the home team a 27-24 victory that was much more difficult than it needed to be.

Dalvin Cook didn’t have his best game of the year, though he did eventually end up going over the 100-yard mark. He got 120 yards on the ground, but it took him 32 carries to get there as the Jaguars were keying on him all afternoon.

The passing game was able to get some things done, however, as Kirk Cousins completed 28-of-43 passes for 305 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He did have the ugly pick-six, but for the most part had a decent game. He was also sacked four times by a Jaguars’ defense that had an NFL-low 11 sacks coming into this week’s action.

Justin Jefferson had his fifth 100-yard game of the season, catching nine passes for 121 yards and a score on the afternoon. That 100-yard game ties him with Anthony Carter for the most 100-yard games for a Minnesota Vikings’ rookie with five. Adam Thielen caught eight passes for 75 yards and a touchdown in his return.

The victory gets the Vikings back to .500 at 6-6, and they have three of their final four on the road, starting with a trip to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next week. The Jaguars fall to 1-11, having loss 11 straight after their opening week victory, and they will host the Tennessee Titans next Sunday.

It wasn’t necessarily pretty, but the Minnesota Vikings got themselves back to even on the 2020 season with a 27-24 overtime victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars at U.S. Bank Stadium. Thank you to everybody that got their coverage of this week’s game right here at The Daily Norseman!

The Vikings have taken the lead and are looking for more

Everybody hold four fingers up above your head, because we’re going to the fourth quarter at U.S. Bank Stadium with the Minnesota Vikings leading the Jacksonville Jaguars by a score of 19-16.

Jacksonville started the second half by putting the kickoff well out of bounds and gave the Vikings great field position at their own 40. Unfortunately, it didn’t matter, as Kirk Cousins’ first throw of the second half was a pick-six by Jaguars’ linebacker Joe Schobert, who took it 43 yards for a score. Chase McLaughlin hit the extra point and the Jaguars suddenly extended their lead to 16-6.

The Vikings got it back on their next possession, however, as Cousins shook off the interception and got the Vikings into the end zone, courtesy of a 12-yard pass to C.J. Ham to get the Vikings back to within three at 16-13 after the Dan Bailey extra point.

The Vikings are still trailing, but it’s closer now!

We’re at halftime in this interconference matchup between the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Minnesota Vikings, and the good guys still trail the bad guys by a score of 9-6.

The Vikings started the second quarter with the ball, but once again did nothing with it and punted it away. Jacksonville, as they’ve done all day thus far, marched the ball down the field and looked like they might add more points, but rookie Cameron Dantzler picked an outstanding time for his first NFL interception, taking one away from a Jacksonville receiver to end the Jaguars’ drive.

Minnesota had an opportunity at a two-minute drive, but they did nothing on offense after forcing a Jaguars’ punt at the two-minute warning and punted away.

The Vikings’ offense has been pretty brutal in the first half, save for the one touchdown drive. Kirk Cousins has been sacked twice by the team that came into this week with the fewest sacks in the NFL. He’s completed 10-of-15 passes for 83 yards and the touchdown to Adam Thielen.

Dalvin Cook has been the Vikings’ leading receiver thus far, gaining 37 yards on four catches. Thielen has three grabs for 29 yards and a touchdown in the first half, while Justin Jefferson has been held to just two catches and 12 yards so far.

The Vikings’ rush offense hasn’t done much, either, as Cook has managed just 21 yards on eight carries. Cousins also has a 10-yard scramble for the Vikings.

Minnesota will get the football to start the second half, and they’ve got some work to do, as they trail the 1-10 Jaguars by a score of 9-6 at U.S. Bank Stadium. Come join us for the third quarter of play from Minneapolis!

The Vikings are trailing the Jaguars after one

The first quarter is in the books from U.S. Bank Stadium, and the Minnesota Vikings trail the Jacksonville Jaguars by a score of 9-0.

The visiting team got the ball first in this one as the Vikings won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. Jacksonville proceeded to march the ball straight down the field with just about no resistance, as they concluded their drive with a 28-yard touchdown pass from Mike Glennon to rookie Laviska Shenault Jr. to get the early lead. Former Vikings practice squad kicker Chase McLaughlin missed the extra point, leaving the lead at 6-0.

Minnesota couldn’t generate anything on their first possession and punted it away. Jacksonville then added to their lead courtesy of a 22-yard field goal from McLaughlin to extend their lead to 9-0 with about six minutes remaining in the quarter.

The Vikings have gotten the ball back, and as we move to the second quarter, they’re looking at a 2nd-and-3 from their own 28-yard line.

Let’s do this!

We are one hour away from the penultimate home game of the 2020 NFL season for your Minnesota Vikings, as they will play host to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 13 NFL action. Three of the Vikings’ final four games are on the road, and they need to win this one and their Week 15 matchup with Chicago just to break even at U.S. Bank Stadium this year, so hopefully they can get that done.

Here’s everything you need to know about today’s game.

Date and Time: Sunday, 6 December, 2020, noon Central time

1) Don’t get cocky, kid - The Vikings come into this one as double-digit favorites at home, a situation they’ve found themselves in a couple of times over the past few seasons. Those situations have not gone terribly well for the Vikings. This is a game that they should win, but they’re not a good enough team at this point to assume that they can win just by showing up. They need to come out with fire and get things going early.

2) Open up the offense - The Jaguars’ defense is pretty bad against both the pass and the run. Adam Thielen will be back in the lineup this week, and Justin Jefferson continued his great rookie season last week in Thielen’s absence. The Vikings have enough weapons where they shouldn’t have to lean on Dalvin Cook quite as much as they have, but this team needs to come out aggressive.

3) Keep improving on special teams - Against a team like the Jaguars, the Vikings can’t afford to give up extra possessions and give them an opportunity to stay close. Special teams can give Jacksonville the opportunity to do just that, so the Vikings’ specialists need to be smart in their returns and make sure tackles when the purple are kicking or punting to keep from giving the Jaguars more opportunities.

Other than that, here’s hoping that today is the kind of game that we rarely see from our favorite football team. . .a game that they should win that they actually go out and win without any drama or last-minute insanity. We’ll be back here when it’s over to talk about it.

Who will be watching this one from the sidelines?

We’re just about ninety minutes from kickoff at U.S. Bank Stadium, and the Jacksonville Jaguars and Minnesota Vikings have released their inactive lists ahead of today’s matchup. Let’s take a look at who will be sitting this one out for both sides, starting with the visiting team.

Jacksonville Jaguars

LB Dakota Allen

LB Kamalei Correa

TE Tyler Davis

DE Reggie Gilbert

QB Jake Luton

CB Sidney Jones IV

The Jaguars had listed five players as being out on their injury report, but placed two of them (tight end Ben Ellefson and defensive tackle Davon Hamilton) on injured reserve on Saturday. All three of the players that the Jaguars had listed as questionable are active for today’s contest.

Now, we move on to the home team.

Minnesota Vikings

CB Dylan Mabin

RB Alexander Mattison

S Curtis Riley

WR Tajae Sharpe

TE Irv Smith Jr.

OL Olisaemeka Udoh

DE D.J. Wonnum

Smith and Wonnum were both declared out on the final injury report, and Mattison was downgraded to out after his appendectomy on Saturday. The Vikings didn’t have anyone else with an injury designation on their final report, so it’s pretty much the usual suspects on the inactive list for the purple this week.

Those are your inactive lists for the Vikings and Jaguars, folks. We’ll have the first discussion thread for today’s game dropping at the top of the hour, 11:00 AM Central time.

Let’s make sure you can follow all the action

We are just hours away from getting back to NFL football for this week, as the Minnesota Vikings and Jacksonville Jaguars will be kicking things off from U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis in Week 13 action. As always, we want to ensure that you have the ability to follow along with all of the action, so we’ll be putting everything you need in one convenient place.

Television Info

This one will begin, as it should, at that greatest of times for an NFL kickoff, that being noon Central time on Sunday afternoon. In a bit of a shift, this game will be on CBS, which is WCCO-4 in the Twin Cities, and the game will be called by Beth Mowins and Jay Feely. This marks the first time that a woman has ever done the play-by-play for a Minnesota Vikings’ game, so that’s kind of cool. Almost as importantly, it means that we won’t be subjected to a third straight week of Cheatin’ Ass Jonathan Vilma trying to pronounce people’s names.

If you’re unsure of whether or not you’re in the local broadcast area for this one, here’s the usual map from the folks at 506 Sports. The Jaguars/Vikings game is represented by the orange area.

If you’re using your DirecTV Sunday Ticket package for this game, point your receiver towards Channel 707.

For our men and women in uniform overseas. . .well, let me put it like this. There are 15 games in the National Football League this week. Whether live or on a replay, the American Forces Network will be broadcasting 14 of those 15 games this week. Guess which one is missing.

Yep. . .sorry, folks.

Radio Info

Once again, the Vikings Radio Network and all of its affiliates will be bringing you live broadcasts of every Vikings game for 2020. If you’re traveling around an area where there’s an affiliate or you just prefer the radio to the television, check out their site and find the affiliate in your area.

For those with satellite radio, you can find the Vikings feed for this contest on either Sirius Channel 81 or XM Channel 226. If you’re using the SiriusXM app, the Vikings’ permanent home there can be found on Channel 820.

Referee Info

Based on the information provided by the folks at Football Zebras, the officiating crew for this week’s game will be led by Land Clark. If that name doesn’t sound familiar, that’s because he’s in his first year as a National Football League referee, and this is the first game he’ll call that involves the Vikings.

Weather Info

Once again, the game’s going to be indoors, so the elements will not come into play. Since there won’t be any fans at the stadium, travel and tailgating won’t be an issue either. But, so we have it on the record, our friends at WeatherNation are calling for a pretty nice December day in the Twin Cities. Temperature at kickoff will be in the mid-30s with a light wind out of the northwest.

Streaming Info

With this game being broadcast on CBS, you can stream it through CBS All-Access. Otherwise, I believe a lot of the cord-cutting services offer some sort of streaming option, and there’s always NFL GamePass if you don’t have any of those. Heck, you can even get Sunday Ticket on your PlayStation or XBox, if nothing else.

In the spirit of the legendary Bob Casey, there will be no illegal streams here on the Daily Norseman. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO illegal streams here on the Daily Norseman. Promoting such things is grounds for an immediate and permanent ban. Don’t be one of those troll accounts that we get here every so often that we ban across the entire platform.

That should be all of the relevant information you need to follow all of the action from U.S. Bank Stadium this afternoon between the Minnesota Vikings and the Jacksonville Jaguars. As always, the Game Threads will start flowing approximately an hour before kickoff, so we hope to see you here then.

But it’s for a good reason

With the Minnesota Vikings getting ready to face the Jacksonville Jaguars at U.S. Bank Stadium in less than 24 hours, there’s late word of a pretty significant change to the running back depth chart for the purple.

According to Close, Personal Friend of The Daily Norseman Tom Pelissero™, backup running back Alexander Mattison had appendicitis and underwent successful surgery. That’s the good news. The bad news is that he is now, obviously, out for Sunday’s contest against Jacksonville. That means that, if anything should happen to Dalvin Cook tomorrow afternoon, it’s going to be the Mike Boone show. Ameer Abdullah could see some carries out of the backfield as well.

In addition, the Vikings have elevated two players from the practice squad for tomorrow’s game in defensive end Eddie Yarbrough and tight end Brandon Dillon. This will be the second time being elevated for Dillon, who will serve as the third tight end with Irv Smith Jr. still on the shelf for this week.

More coverage of this week’s game coming soon as we get closer to kickoff in Minneapolis.
