The Vikings lost what turned into something of an old-school defensive battle that resembled an NFC Central division game from the 1970s. The Vikings lost the game in the trenches, as the offense struggled to get their run game going, while Kirk Cousins was under pressure nearly every drop back after the first drive. Meanwhile, while the Vikings defense held the Browns to just 14 points, they also allowed them to possess the ball for over 35 minutes. And, if not for a truly awful performance from Baker Mayfield, the Browns may have won by a bigger margin. As it was, the game came down to the last play, on which the Vikings fell short, as did the officiating crew, who missed an obvious defensive pass interference penalty.

Be that as it may, it was a hard fought but fairly dull game against a Browns team that has a pretty solid roster, with few weak spots outside of quarterback. The Vikings defense, with some assistance from Baker Mayfield, did a good job of keeping the Browns out of the end zone. If not for a questionable holding call on Eric Kendricks, on a 4th and goal stop, the Browns may not have gotten in all afternoon.

Offensively, this was easily the best overall defense the Vikings have faced, and may face the rest of the season. The offensive line wasn’t quite up to the task, and after the first drive, were getting pushed back consistently the rest of the afternoon. And with the offensive line struggling, so too did Kirk Cousins and the rest of the Vikings offense.

With that, let’s look at individual performances. Not a lot that stood out today, but here goes.

Blue Chip Stocks

Justin Jefferson. While it was a tough day for the Vikings passing game, JJ still managed 6 receptions on 7 targets for 84 yards and a TD- most of those receptions were tough catches too.

Patrick Peterson. Peterson has had a better start to his Vikings career than he gets credit for, and against the Browns Peterson allowed just a 52.1 passer rating when targeted.

Danielle Hunter. Hunter led the team with 7 pressures including a sack, facing a tough matchup in Jack Conklin most of the time.

Everson Griffen. Griffen had 5 pressures including a sack on about two-thirds of the pass rush snaps as Hunter. Griffen has done well the past couple games, which is good because D.J. Wonnum has not.

Solid Secondary Offering

Cam Dantzler. He didn’t get the start, but he played most of the game in relief of Bashaud Breeland, who was sick. He had been listed as questionable with an illness earlier in the week. Dantzler did pretty well in coverage and also had some good plays in run support. There’s been some drama with Dantzler stemming from what seems to be his dissatisfaction with Breeland being brought in and displacing him as a starter after a very good second half to his rookie year. Dantzler appears to be working back into Zimmer’s good graces, and hopefully his performance against the Browns will lead to his regaining his starting job over Breeland, who has yet to have a good game.

Earnings Warning

Offensive Line. The OL went backwards, literally and figuratively, against the Browns. It was a tough matchup, but the Browns defensive line won it convincingly. Kirk Cousins was under pressure just about every drop back after their first drive, and that pressure weighed heavily on the offensive performance. Equally, they weren’t able to open many holes in the running game, creating a good number of unfavorable down and distance situations.

D.J. Wonnum. Wonnum hasn’t really been effective against the run or pass, not only in this game, but so far this season. I’m not sure what happened to Wonnum playing outside linebacker- the Vikings experimented with him in that role in preseason, but haven’t noticed him much in that role since the season started. In any case, Wonnum is t pulling his weight.

Thoughts on 1-3

The Vikings are now 1-3 and two games behind the Packers at 3-1 in the division. Looking back at the Vikings early schedule, the Vikings have faced the most explosive offense in the 4-0 Cardinals on the road, and played them closer than the Rams did at home. The Browns were a top AFC team as advertised, and again the Vikings played them close. Even the Bengals are 3-1 and have a top defense. And the 2-2 Seahawks had the 2nd ranked offense in DVOA. Bottom line, this wasn’t as easy an early schedule as expected preseason. It may also be that a couple games later in the schedule won’t be quite as tough- SF and Pittsburgh for example, and maybe even Baltimore due to injuries. The problem is that the Panthers, Chargers, and Cowboys look like tougher matchups now too.

Mike Zimmer remained as confident as ever that he has a good team this year in his post-game press conference, saying he’s been doing this for 27 years and knows when he has a good team. The issue at 1-3 is that they don’t have much time to get the kinks out and start stacking wins. Apart from this Browns game, the offense has been one of the best in the league. The defense, after taking some time to get things together- and facing the most explosive offense in the league, has held two top ten offenses in Seattle and Cleveland to 17 points or less.

But they need to put it all together and also win the close games. Hosting Detroit next week should help right the ship. But after that they’ve got a six game stretch of tough opponents, beginning with Carolina on the road, followed by five in a row after their bye-week. That stretch is where we’ll find out just how good this Vikings team is.

Stay tuned.

It was awfully ugly after the first drive

The first seven and a half minutes of the Minnesota Vikings’ afternoon against the Cleveland Browns were as good as anybody could have hoped for. The fifty-two and a half minutes that followed? Not so much.

The Vikings scored on their opening possession of the game and then generated almost nothing on offense the rest of the way, falling

The Vikings struck first in this one, as they took the opening possession and marched down the field, taking up half of the first quarter to do so. The drive ended on a 12-yard strike from Kirk Cousins to Justin Jefferson, with the extra point from Greg Joseph making it 7-0 Vikings midway through the first quarter of play.

The game then remained scoreless until late in the second quarter. The Browns, who had failed on a fourth down deep in Minnesota territory earlier in the game, appeared to fail once again on an incomplete pass. However, a holding penalty on Eric Kendricks extended the drive, and the Browns took advantage with a 1-yard touchdown run from Kareem Hunt. The Browns got the two-point conversion to take an 8-7 lead, and also managed a 48-yarder from former Vikings’ practice squad kicker Chase McLaughlin to take an 11-7 lead into the locker room at halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter of play, the Browns extended their lead with another McLaughlin field goal, a 53-yarder to make it 14-7 with just over six minutes remaining in the game. On the first play of the ensuing drive, Cousins threw his first interception of the season as a deep shot for Adam Thielen was intercepted by Greedy Williams in Cleveland territory. It was the first interception for Cousins in 226 attempts, which stands as the franchise record.

The Vikings forced a punt from the Browns and moved into Cleveland territory at the two-minute warning. On 4th-and-3 from the Cleveland 33, the Vikings provided pretty much no protection for Cousins and he was taken down on the play for a turnover on downs. Cleveland ran out the clock and that pretty much did it for the afternoon.

The Vikings’ offense was just brutal after the opening drive, particularly on the offensive line, as they just let Cousins get pressured all afternoon. That led to the worst offensive performance of the year for the purple, as they fall to 1-3 on the season.

Minnesota concludes their three-game homestand next week by hosting the Detroit Lions, while the Browns will travel to the west coast to take on the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Vikings fall to the Browns by a final score of 14-7 in Week 4 of the 2021 NFL season. Thank you to everybody that got their coverage of this week’s game right here at The Daily Norseman!

The purple still trail after a scoreless third quarter

Everybody hold up four fingers, because we are heading to the final fifteen minutes of play at U.S. Bank Stadium with the Cleveland Browns leading the Minnesota Vikings by a score of 11-7.

There was no scoring in the third quarter, as both offenses have struggled quite a bit. I’m not sure why the Vikings have completely abandoned the idea of pass blocking since the first drive of the day, but they appear to have done just that. Since the opening drive, the Vikings have only had the ball for about seven minutes of game time, which is not a recipe for success.

The Vikings need to get something going here on offense if they want to extend their winning streak to two games. Don’t forget that, following the game, we will be offering not one, but two live post-game shows. Vikings Report with Drew and Ted will be offering up their live show with Drew, Ted, and Chris, while our friends from Climbing the Pocket will have a live post-game show for your viewing pleasure as well.
Can the Vikings get their second win of the year, folks? Let’s watch the fourth quarter together and find out.

The good guys now trail going into the locker room

We’ve reached halftime in Minneapolis, and your Minnesota Vikings trail the Cleveland Browns by a score of 11-7 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

The Browns started the quarter facing a 3rd-and-4 from the Minnesota 6-yard line as their first possession of the game carried over. Baker Mayfield’s pass on third down fell incomplete, and the Browns decided that they’d go for it on fourth down. Mayfield dropped back to pass, and he was taken down by Everson Griffen for a sack to force a turnover on downs!

The two teams then exchanged three-and-outs, and the Vikings pushed into Cleveland territory for the second time. They faced a fourth-down situation of their own, and Cousins’ pass for Thielen fell incomplete.

Cleveland then responded with another long drive and pushed into Minnesota territory, finding themselves at first-and-goal from the 5 at the two-minute warning. The Browns wound up facing 4th-and-goal from the 2, and it looked like the Vikings had made another stop when Mayfield’s pass fell incomplete, but a holding penalty was called on Eric Kendricks to give the Browns a fresh set of downs. They took advantage of what was a garbage penalty call on a 1-yard run by Kareem Hunt. A penalty on the extra point attempt gave the Browns the confidence to go for two, and they converted to take an 8-7 lead.

After the Vikings’ offense went three-and-out, the Browns appeared to be ready to run out the clock and go into halftime, but Hunt gained 33 yards on a 3rd-and-20 play to give the Browns life. Former Vikings’ kicker Chase McLaughlin came on to attempt a field goal from 48 yards and he hit it to extend the lead to 11-7. That’s how they went into the locker room at halftime.

The Vikings’ offense has struggled a bit since the first drive of the game. Unfortunately, the Browns will get the ball first coming out of the locker room.

The good guys are in the lead but the bad guys are threatening

We have made it through the first quarter at U.S. Bank Stadium, and your Minnesota Vikings lead the Cleveland Browns by a score of 7-0.

The Browns won the coin toss and chose to defer to the second half, meaning that Kirk Cousins, Dalvin Cook, and the Vikings’ offense got the football first. The Vikings put together a great drive, mixing Cook in with a series of nice throws from Cousins to push to a fourth-and-1 play from the Cleveland 9-yard line. C.J. Ham converted the first down to make it a goal-to-go situation, and a pass from Cousins to Justin Jefferson was taken off the board because Cousins had crossed the line of scrimmage before throwing the ball. A couple of plays later, however, Cousins found Jefferson again, and this one counted for a 12-yard score. Greg Joseph hit the extra point, and after a drive that took up half the first quarter, the Vikings had a 7-0 lead.

Cleveland then got the ball and put together a long, impressive drive of their own. The Browns converted multiple third downs on the drive, both through the air and on the ground, and as we move to the second quarter of play, the Browns are looking at a 3rd-and-4 from the Minnesota 6-yard line. Each team only had one possession in the opening quarter.

After a quick first quarter at U.S. Bank Stadium, the Vikings lead the Browns by a score of 7-0, but Cleveland is threatening. Come on in and join us for the second quarter of play!

Chris’ Prediction: Vikings 31, Browns 27

Three Keys

1) Keep playing disciplined - After a dozen penalties in the season opener against Cincinnati, the Vikings have been flagged just seven times in the past two games combined. As a result, the offense and the defense have looked significantly better. Imagine that? The Vikings need to continue this trend to keep themselves on schedule against a very good Browns team.

2) Keep Kirk Cousins upright - The Browns have a very good pass rush, led by Myles Garrett, who set a Browns’ team record last week with 4.5 sacks. With Rashod Hill struggling a bit at left tackle, the Vikings might have to take some steps to help him out with protections to keep Garrett away from Cousins and keep the offense clicking the way it has the past two weeks.

3) Keep the crowd in the game - Last week, it was pretty easy to see that the home crowd did help the Vikings out quite a bit, despite them allowing Seattle to march down the field on the opening possession. The Vikings need to do things to keep the crowd rowdy in this one in the hopes that they can help to disrupt the Browns on both sides of the football.

As always, we will have a brand new Open Thread up at the start of each quarter, so be sure to keep your eyes open for that and keep the discussion moving along accordingly.

With that, the Vikings have a chance to get themselves back to even with a victory in this one. Hopefully we’ll all be back here in about three hours to celebrate the start of a winning streak for our favorite team.

Who is sitting this one out?

We are ninety minutes away from kickoff at U.S. Bank Stadium, and both the Minnesota Vikings and Cleveland Browns have published their inactive lists for today’s game. Let’s take a look at who will be sitting this one out, starting with the visiting side.

Cleveland Browns

G Michael Dunn

OT Chris Hubbard (triceps)

CB Greg Newsome II (calf)

DE Ifeadi Odenigbo

DT Tommy Togiai

No huge surprises on the inactive list for the Browns. Hubbard and Newsome had already been declared out. All of the starting offensive linemen that they had listed on their injury report are active, including starting center J.C. Tretter and left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr.

And there won’t be an Ifeadi Odenigbo revenge game. Okay.

And now, on to the home team.

Minnesota Vikings

LB Anthony Barr (knee)

CB Kris Boyd (hamstring)

G Wyatt Davis

DT James Lynch

DE Patrick Jones II

WR Ihmir Smith-Marsette (toe)

QB Kellen Mond

For the Vikings, Dalvin Cook and Christian Darrisaw are both up today. Darrisaw will reportedly play on the field goal unit as they ease him in following his injury, but Rashod Hill will continue to be the primary left tackle. Michael Pierce is also up, and his presence is going to be important against Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt in this one.

Those are your inactive lists for today’s contest, ladies and gentlemen. Our Discussion Thread for the first quarter of action will hit the site at approximately 11:00 AM Central, and we hope to see you there!
