The purple throw away a golden opportunity

Everything was trending the Minnesota Vikings’ way going into their game against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. The Cowboys would be without their starting quarterback and the Vikings were coming off of a bye week in front of what promised to be a raucous home crowd.

But, this is Vikings football.

The Cowboys, behind Cooper Rush. . .who had not thrown a pass in the NFL since 2017. . .did just enough to beat the Vikings on Sunday Night Football by a final score of 20-16 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

The Vikings got on the board first in this one, taking the opening kickoff and marching it 75 yards, concluding the drive with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Kirk Cousins to a wide-open Adam Thielen. Greg Joseph hit the extra point and the Vikings found themselves leading 7-0 just over three minutes into the contest.

The Cowboys had an opportunity for points on their first drive, but Greg Zuerlein pushed a 43-yard field goal attempt wide to the left to keep the visitors off the scoreboard.

Early in the second quarter, Cooper Rush (starting in place of Dak Prescott) threw a pass over the middle that was tipped by Harrison Smith into the hands of former Cowboy Xavier Woods for an interception to stop a potentially promising drive.

The Vikings could not turn the turnover into points, and the Cowboys finally got on the board on the next drive with a 38-yard field goal from Zuerlein to make it 7-3 with just over six minutes left in the half.

Minnesota took advantage of some Dallas errors on the subsequent drive, including an offside penalty on a punt that gave them a free set of downs. The Vikings then got a big fourth-down conversion from Cousins to Thielen to put them into Dallas territory. Unfortunately, they only mustered a field goal as Greg Joseph connected on a 44-yarder to make it 10-3.

Dallas got into the end zone right away in the third quarter, courtesy of a 73-yard touchdown pass from Rush to Cedrick Wilson that saw him just run away from Mackensie Alexander on a blown coverage. Zuerlein was good on the extra point, and just like that the game was tied at 10-10.

Minnesota took the lead back with just over six minutes left in the third quarter on a 41-yard field goal from Joseph to make the score 13-10. At the end of the quarter, the Cowboys tied it back up again on a 39-yarder from Zuerlein to make it 13-13.

The Cowboys began to march again in the fourth quarter, but Woods made another big play as he came in on the blitz and hit Cooper Rush to cause a fumble that Anthony Barr recovered at the Minnesota 48-yard line.

The Vikings proceeded to go backwards on the ensuing drive because of penalties, giving the ball back to Dallas with about nine minutes left to play.

Minnesota finally got back into the red zone thanks to a raft of Dallas penalties late in the fourth, but the drive stalled out and the Vikings settled for a 24-yard field goal from Joseph to take the lead back, 16-13, with just under three minutes remaining in the contest.

That was too much time for Cooper Rush, who led the Cowboys down the field and got them to a first-and-goal at the Minnesota 4-yard line. Rush then hit Amari Cooper for a touchdown and the Cowboys took their first lead of the night with just 51 seconds remaining, 20-16.

The Minnesota Vikings lost to a Dallas team with their backup quarterback, and they richly deserved it. We’ll just leave it at that for this one.

Everything is tied going into the final quarter

Everyone put four fingers way up above your heads, because we’ve reached the final fifteen minutes of play at U.S. Bank Stadium with the Minnesota Vikings tied with the Dak Prescott-less Dallas Cowboys at 13-13.

Dallas got the ball first coming out of the locker room, and they got into the end zone for the first time on the evening courtesy of a 73-yard touchdown pass from Cooper Rush to Cedrick Wilson. It was as bad as I just made it sound. Greg Zuerlein was good on the extra point and less than a minute into the third quarter the game was tied at 10-10.

The Vikings punted after their first possession, giving the ball to the Cowboys at their own 16 after the punt. Dallas responded with a three-and-out, punctuated by a sack from Everson Griffen, the second of the game for the Vikings.

Minnesota took the lead back on their next possession, as Greg Joseph connected on a 41-yard field goal to put the purple back in front, 13-10. The Cowboys pushed into Minnesota territory again on the next possession on a trick play where Cedrick Wilson hit Ceedee Lamb for a big gain, but the Vikings got a big stop on 3rd-and-8 to bring out the field goal unit. Dallas brought Zuerlein out once again, and he connected from 39 yards out to tie things back up again at 13-13.

As we move to the fourth quarter of play, the Vikings are looking at a 2nd-and-12 from their own 23-yard line.

Can the Vikings beat the almighty Cooper Rush and move to 4-3 on the season? How angry will we be if they don’t? Come and watch the conclusion of this one with us and find out!

It’s still a seven-point lead for the good guys

It’s halftime in this Sunday Night Football contest, and the Minnesota Vikings lead the Dallas Cowboys by a score of 10-3 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

The Cowboys had the ball to start the second quarter, and Cooper Rush got things going by throwing a pass over the middle that was tipped by Harrison Smith into the hands of the former Cowboy, Xavier Woods, for an interception to end that drive.

The Vikings could only manage one first down on the subsequent drive and punted it back to Dallas. Dallas got on the board on the ensuing possession, as Greg Zuerlein punched it through from 38 yards out to cut the Minnesota lead to 7-3 with just over six minutes left in the half.

Minnesota looked like they were stopped on the next drive, but the Cowboys jumped offside on the punt and gave the Vikings a free set of downs. Then, the Vikings went for it on 4th-and-inches from their own 45-yard line and Kirk Cousins hit Adam Thielen for a big 32-yard gain just before the two-minute warning. The drive stalled out and the Vikings settled for a 44-yard field goal from Greg Joseph to make it 10-3 with 1:44 left in the half. That’s how the half ended as the Cowboys couldn’t muster anything on offense before the half, but they’ll get the ball coming out of the locker room.

We’re at halftime at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday Night Football, and the Vikings lead the Cowboys by a score of 10-3. Come on in and join us for the third quarter of play!

We’ve made it through the first quarter of play from U.S. Bank Stadium, and your Minnesota Vikings lead the Dallas Cowboys by a score of 7-0 on Sunday Night Football.

The Cowboys won the toss and deferred to the second half, giving the Vikings the football first for this one. The first big play of the night came from Tyler Conklin, who beat former Viking Jayron Kearse down the right sideline and caught a fade from Kirk Cousins for 31 yards. Cousins then went deep for Justin Jefferson, who drew a pass interference penalty from Trevon Diggs to move the Vikings into the red zone. Two plays later, Cousins found a wide open Adam Thielen over the middle of the field, and he took the ball in for a 19-yard touchdown. Greg Joseph hit the extra point, and just over three minutes in the Vikings had a 7-0 lead.

Dallas, led by Cooper Rush, put together a solid opening drive of their own, pushing into Vikings’ territory before the drive was ended by Eric Kendricks getting the first sack of the evening for Minnesota. Greg Zuerlein lined up for a 43-yard field goal, but he pushed his kick wide to the left to keep the Cowboys scoreless.

Minnesota was forced to punt on the next possession after Cousins missed Justin Jefferson on a wide-open throw that it looked like Jefferson may have slowed down on. The Cowboys got the ball back, and as we move to the second quarter of play they have a 1st-and-10 from their own 48-yard line.

It’s finally here!

Alright, folks. . .we have, officially, waited all day for Sunday Night, and we’re just about ready for kickoff at U.S. Bank Stadium for Week 8 action between the Dallas Cowboys and your Minnesota Vikings. Let’s get you caught up with all of the information you need to know heading into this one.

Chris’ Prediction: Vikings 27, Cowboys 24

Three Keys

1) Limit the Dallas run game - With all of the drama surrounding Dak Prescott and the Cowboys’ quarterback situation, it may be even more important to limit what the Cowboys can do on the ground. They have a very good ground game with Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard carrying the load, and if the Vikings can keep the Cowboys “behind the chains” a bit it will help them to get after either a hobbled Prescott or an inexperienced Cooper Rush.

2) Don’t be scared of Trevon Diggs - The NFL’s interception leader has made a ton of big plays this season, but he’s also given up some big ones because of his aggressiveness. I don’t know who Diggs will primarily be assigned to this evening, but the Vikings’ offense can’t limit themselves because of the Cowboys’ coverage. There will be plays there for the taking this evening and the Vikings will have to make them.

3) Win on special teams - The Vikings have had their issues on special teams over the past couple of games, whether it’s Greg Joseph missing field goals, Dede Westbrook turning every punt return into an adventure, or penalties in the return game. This team can’t have those things going forward. They need to clean up their special teams issues to enhance their chances of winning this one.

With that, let’s get ready for some football and hope that, by the end of the night, our bags have significantly more “treats” than “tricks” in them and we’ll all be celebrating the Vikings’ third straight victory.

It’s the Cooper Rush show

You probably saw it when we posted the inactive lists for tonight just a short time ago, but the week’s biggest drama has officially reached its conclusion.

Dak Prescott, the Dallas Cowboys’ star quarterback, has been deactivated by the Cowboys leading up to Sunday Night Football against the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium this evening.

Prescott suffered a calf strain in the Cowboys’ victory over New England in Week 6, and even the bye week wasn’t enough to get the Cowboys’ training staff completely comfortable with starting him tonight against Minnesota.

That means that Cooper Rush will get his first NFL start this evening. Rush is in his fourth season in the league and has thrown just three passes, completing one for two yards, and has not thrown a pass in a regular-season game since his rookie year of 2017.

It looks like the Vikings’ run defense is going to have to have their big boy pants on tonight, as I’d expect Mike McCarthy to feature a heavy dose of Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard against a Minnesota defense that will once again be without Michael Pierce.

Once again, Dak Prescott is inactive for the Cowboys for tonight’s game against the Vikings, giving Cooper Rush his first NFL start tonight on Sunday Night Football.

Who will be sitting this one out?

We’re just ninety minutes away from kickoff at U.S. Bank Stadium, and both the Dallas Cowboys and the Minnesota Vikings have released their inactive lists for this week’s contest. Let’s take a look at who will be sitting this one out for both sides.

Dallas Cowboys

G Matt Farinok

WR Simi Fehoko

DE Azur Kamara

S Israel Mukuamu

QB Dak Prescott (calf)

After all of the drama throughout the course of this week, Prescott will officially sit this one out for the Cowboys. Cooper Rush will make his first NFL start, having not thrown an NFL pass since 2017, with Will Grier as his backup. I have a feeling that the Cowboys are going to try to run a lot tonight.

Minnesota Vikings

G Wyatt Davis

DE Patrick Jones II (knee)

QB Kellen Mond

DT Michael Pierce (elbow)

LB Chazz Surratt

WR Dede Westbrook (ankle)

Pierce and Jones both out, as expected. Westbrook is also a scratch with his ankle issue after being listed as “questionable.” No word on who will be returning punts for the Vikings as a result of his absence.

Those are your inactive lists for tonight’s game, folks. We’ll have our Open Thread for the first quarter of this one dropping at approximately 6:20 PM Central time.
