On The Real Forno Show - The Vikings win again in yet another comeback with a dramatic 61-yard field goal by Greg Joseph. Did you have any doubts?

On this The Real Forno Show - The Minnesota Vikings might as well be the new cardiac kids as they let things go down to the wire with the New York Giants by a score of 27-24. They did so on the leg of Greg Joseph, who kicked a franchise-record 61-yard field goal to win the game.

Vikings WIN! Vikings WIN! Vikings WIN! This turned into one of those games where whichever team had the ball last was going to win. The NFL loves that.

On the Final Score today…

The Whiteout is in full effect and your Minnesota Vikings are coming off of their big emotional comeback victory last week, and for most of this game seems a little dull. It is at the end of the third quarter and they trail the New York Giants 13–10 after opening the game with a 10–0 lead, the Vikings' defense looks to be returning to its old self, and that’s not a good thing. But they did get some key plays. Will the defense step up in the fourth quarter? For the most part. Will this be another comeback win for Kirk Cousins? It was, making 8 for this season and tying the NFL record. Does Justin Jefferson get enough catches to break the hundred-yard mark again? He did for 133 and another record. We’ll find out! And we did. Greg Joseph was “G-money” nailing the 61-yarder as time ran out to win. Join us in those final two minutes. Hopefully, we cheer on a victory and don’t have to vent today [we don’t] on Christmas Eve. Your Vikings now have a 12-3 record so let Vikings and holiday cheer begin!

Same thing that happens every weekend

Coming into Saturday’s game at U.S. Bank Stadium, the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants were first and second in the NFL in one-score games. So, we should have expected as much in Week 16, and that’s precisely what we got.

It took a 61-yard field goal from Greg Joseph with no time left on the clock, but the Vikings got yet another one-score victory on Christmas Eve by holding off the Giants by a final score of 27-24.

After both teams punted on their first two possessions, the Vikings got into the end zone first, courtesy of a 12-yard touchdown pass from Kirk Cousins to T.J. Hockenson to give the Vikings an early 7-0 lead.

On the Giants’ next drive, they pushed into Minnesota territory but rookie Brian Asamoah made the biggest play of his young career, stripping the ball from Giants’ tight end Daniel Bellinger after a catch and scooping it up himself for a big turnover.

The Vikings turned the turnover into points, as Greg Joseph connected on a 40-yard field goal to push the lead to 10-0 with just under ten minutes left in the half. The Giants responded with their first points of the afternoon, as Daniel Jones connected with Isaiah Hodgins for a 7-yard touchdown to make it a 10-7 game with just over four minutes left in the first half. That was the score when the two teams went into halftime.

New York tied things up on their opening drive of the second half, getting Graham Gano into position for a 44-yard field goal. He connected, and that tied things at 10-10 just under four minutes into the second half.

The Giants then took a lead on another 44-yard field goal from Gano, making it 13-10 with four and a half minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Minnesota took the lead back early in the fourth quarter on the second touchdown catch of the day for T.J. Hockenson, a beautiful 15-yard pitch-and-catch from Cousins for the score. Greg Joseph’s extra point was good, and the Vikings were back on top by a score of 17-13 less than a minute into the fourth quarter.

It looked like the Giants might march back down the field and pick up more points, but a Giants’ drive into Minnesota territory was stopped cold by Patrick Peterson, who intercepted Daniel Jones deep in Minnesota territory to get the purple the football back. The Vikings’ offense then faced a 4th-and-2 from the Giants’ 44-yard line, and Kevin O’Connell kept the offense on the field. Unfortunately, Cousins’ pass for Justin Jefferson fell incomplete for a turnover on downs.

New York got within a point on another Gano field goal, this one a 55-yarder that cut the score to 17-16 with 6:24 left in the contest. After the Vikings were forced to punt it away again, Minnesota’s special teams came up huge when Josh Metellus blocked a Jamie Gillian punt with the Vikings recovering at the New York 29-yard line.

The Vikings cashed in on the blocked punt thanks to the best wide receiver in the NFL, as Cousins found Jefferson from 17 yards out to make it 24-16 with three minutes left in regulation.

But, because this is the Vikings, they couldn’t make it easy and the Giants once again pushed down the field and into Minnesota territory. Then, on a 4th-and-2 play from the Minnesota 27-yard line, Saquon Barkley busted through and the seas parted for a 27-yard touchdown run to make it 24-22. The Giants then got the necessary two-point conversion, as Jones found Bellinger for the score to tie things at 24-24 with two minutes remaining.

That was all the time the Vikings needed, as the offense got Greg Joseph into position to attempt a 61-yard field goal with seconds left on the clock. Joseph lined up the kick and absolutely drilled it, setting a new Vikings franchise record and giving the Vikings a 27-24 victory.

There were a lot of stars in this one. Both Jefferson (133 yards) and Hockenson (109 yards) went over the 100-yard mark and accounted for all of Kirk Cousins’ touchdown passes, as Cousins threw for 299 yards on the afternoon. A lot of players made big plays in big situations and it was just enough to move Minnesota’s record in one-score games this season to 11-0 and keep them ahead of the San Francisco 49ers for the #2 spot in the NFC playoff field.

Minnesota’s record moves to 12-3 with the win, and they’ll travel to Lambeau Field next weekend for their second game of the year against Green Bay. The Giants move to 8-6-1 and will host the Indianapolis Colts next Sunday afternoon.

The Minnesota Vikings give us another gift on Christmas Eve, as they defeat the New York Giants in the regular-season home finale by a score of 27-24 at the buzzer. Thanks to everyone that got their coverage of this week’s game right here at The Daily Norseman!

The good guys now trail, but they’re threatening

It is once again that time where I ask you to raise four fingers way above your head, as we’ve reached the fourth quarter of the regular-season home finale from U.S. Bank Stadium with your Minnesota Vikings now trailing the New York Giants by a score of 13-10.

The Giants got the football coming out of the locker room and put together a solid drive. . .solid enough to allow Graham Gano to connect on a 44-yard field goal to tie things up at 10-10 less than four minutes into the third quarter.

The Vikings got the ball out to near midfield on their next possession, but the offense stalled and Ryan Wright punted it away with the Giants taking over at their own 20 after Ryan Wright’s first touchback of the season. Daniel Jones once again led the New York offense down the field but a sack by D.J. Wonnum eventually ended their drive and forced the Giants to settle for another Graham Gano field goal attempt, this one a 44-yarder to put the Giants ahead for the first time on the afternoon, 13-10, with four and a half minutes left in the third quarter.

Minnesota got the ball back and got the ball out near midfield in two plays, and as we move to the fourth quarter of play are looking at a 1st-and-10 from the Giants’ 20-yard line as they try to respond.

We’re into the final quarter of football at U.S. Bank Stadium for this regular season, and the Vikings trail the Giants by a score of 13-10 but are in a position to get some more points. Can the Vikings close their home slate with a victory? Come join us for the fourth quarter and find out!

The good guys still lead, but by fewer points

We’ve reached halftime of the 2022 regular-season home finale for the Minnesota Vikings, and the purple lead the New York Giants by a score of 10-7.

The Giants started the quarter with the football at the Minnesota 39, but rookie Brian Asamoah stripped the ball away after a reception by New York’s Daniel Bellinger and then scooped it up for a big turnover!

The Vikings turned the turnover into points, but only three of them as a sack of Kirk Cousins led to a 40-yard field goal by Greg Joseph to make it 10-0 with just under ten minutes left in the second quarter.

The Giants responded with their first points of the afternoon, as Daniel Jones found Isaiah Hodgins for a 7-yard touchdown on the ensuing drive. Graham Gano was good on the extra point, and with a little more than four minutes to go in the half the Vikings’ lead was reduced to three at 10-7.

The Vikings punted it away on their next possession, with an initially ugly punt by Ryan Wright getting a nice bounce and roll, going out of bounds at the 9-yard line. As the two-minute warning approached, Jones found Hodgins again on a long pass to get the Giants near midfield. The Vikings’ defense stiffened, though, and the Giants were forced to punt once again.

The Giants committed a pass interference penalty to put the Vikings into position to potentially attempt a Hail Mary at the end of the half, but Kirk Cousins was sacked for the second time on the afternoon to send this one into the locker room at 10-7.

That’s how we stand after thirty minutes of football at U.S. Bank Stadium, as the Vikings lead the Giants by a score of 10-7. Come on in and join us for the third quarter of play, folks!

The good guys are up by a touchdown

We’ve made it through the first fifteen minutes of action from U.S. Bank Stadium on this Christmas Eve with your Minnesota Vikings leading the New York Giants by a score of 7-0.

The Vikings got the football first in this one, and Kirk Cousins led the offense onto the field at their own 25-yard line after a touchback. The Vikings got the ball to midfield on a nice run by Dalvin Cook, but the offense stalled from there and they punted the ball away with the Giants starting from their own 24.

The Giants got the ball to near midfield and wound up punting as well. On their second possession, the Vikings. . .had to punt it away again. The Giants started their second possession from their own 33-yard line.

New York proceeded to go three-and-out on a drive that started with a sack of Daniel Jones by Danielle Hunter. Minnesota’s offense took over at its own 16-yard line for their third possession. This possession went much better for the Vikings, starting with Justin Jefferson getting the yardage he needed to set the team’s single-season receiving yardage record. It ended pretty nicely, too, with Kirk Cousins finding T.J. Hockenson for a 12-yard touchdown! Greg Joseph hit the extra point and it was 7-0 with a little more than three minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Congratulations to the NFL’s best wide receiver!

We knew that it was coming, but it’s good that it’s finally out of the way.

With his 25-yard catch in the first quarter against the New York Giants, Minnesota Vikings’ wide receiver Justin Jefferson has set a new franchise record for most receiving yardage in a season. Jefferson is now at 1,648 yards, surpassing the record that Randy Moss set in 2003 with 1,632 yards.

Jefferson set this mark in just 15 games, so there won’t be any sort of an asterisk on this record, which is nice. Now, Jefferson has 2 3⁄4 games to obliterate the record and make it his for a long time.

Jefferson is still looking for the first 2,000-yard season by a receiver in NFL history, and catches like that one will certainly help.

Congratulations to Justin Jefferson on setting a new Minnesota Vikings’ single-season receiving record!

Let’s get the home finale started!

We’re just an hour away from kickoff at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, where our Minnesota Vikings will host the New York Giants in the team’s last regular-season home game of the season. Let’s get you all of the information you need to be prepared for this one.

Date and Time: Saturday, 24 December 2022, noon Central time

Location: U.S. Bank Stadium, Minneapolis, Minnesota

Television Coverage: KMSP-9 in the Twin Cities area, FOX affiliates around the country, DirecTV Channel 712

Radio Coverage: Vikings Radio Network, SiriusXM Channels 82 and 227 (Vikings feed), SiriusXM App Channel 820

Line: Vikings -4, Over/Under 49.5

Chris’ Prediction: Vikings 27, Giants 20

Three Keys

1) Strive for consistency - This team has struggled all year to put a full game together for four quarters. The Giants are a playoff-quality opponent (and the Vikings might even see them in the postseason), and they can’t afford to have those sorts of lulls against quality opponents. They need to find a way to be more even throughout the course of the game so they don’t have to make things quite so exciting.

2) Get after Daniel Jones - Jones is having his best season, but he’s still prone to making some bad decisions. In the second half of last week’s game, we saw the Vikings’ defense get more aggressive than we’ve seen them for most of the season, and that’s the sort of tenor they need to have in today’s game as well. This team needs to get pressure on opposing quarterbacks and today will give them a good chance to do that.

3) Get special teams back on track - The special teams for the Vikings last week were uncharacteristically (at least for this season) bad, giving up big returns and a blocked punt for a score. In games between evenly-matched teams, special teams can make all the difference, and the Vikings need to get themselves back on the right track after a rough week last week.

There you have it, folks. You’re up to speed and ready to go for this afternoon’s game. We’ll have a new Open Thread popping up at the start of each quarter, so keep your eyes open for those and move the discussion along accordingly.

Enjoy today’s game, everyone. . .and here’s hoping that, in about three hours or so, we’ll be able to celebrate finishing the home slate with an 8-1 record.
