As many of you know, I've been pretty vocal of my support of Christian Ponder over the course of this season. At this point, I may be the only person on the planet (outside of Samantha Steele) still supporting him. I've looked for excuses, I've looked for reasons, I've looked for glimmers of hope. . .really, I have.

And after today. . .well, I can't do it any more.

This doesn't mean that the Vikings' wide receivers aren't still awful. . .for the most part, they are. But I just don't understand how things can continue to go the way they've gone. Yes, I know that not much was expected this season from the Minnesota Vikings, and part of me is ecstatic that this team is a .500 team even after a loss like this one. But there comes a point where what was expected becomes less and less important and the time comes to focus on what the team is capable of.

The Minnesota Vikings had a very winnable game in front of them this afternoon at Lambeau Field against the Green Bay Packers. They had a lead at halftime. They held Aaron Rodgers to a good game. . .not a great game, but a good game. More importantly, they had Adrian Peterson going absolutely freaking bonkers again. Peterson had the third 200-yard game of his career, carrying the ball 21 times for 210 yards and a career-long 82-yard touchdown run. He had runs of 48 yards and 23 yards that put the Vikings within striking distance of a touchdown.

And on both of those runs, within two plays, Christian Ponder threw ugly interceptions to kill all of the Vikings' momentum. The second one came on the final play of the third quarter, after which the Packers went on an absolutely soul-crushing drive. . .one that spanned seventeen plays and took exactly eleven minutes off of the clock. By the time the Vikings got the ball back, there was just four minutes remaining and the Vikings were down two scores. Or, in terms of this current Vikings' offense, it was over.

Because of that drive by the Packers, Peterson didn't get a single carry in the fourth quarter of play. Yes, the guy averaged seventy yards per quarter for the first three quarters of the game, and because of the situation didn't get a carry in the fourth quarter of play. The Vikings' offense needed to rack up a bunch of garbage time passing yardage just to keep from having another sub-100 yard passing performance. As it was, Ponder wound up 12-for-25 for 119 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.

Because of the ineptitude of the passing game, the Vikings' defense. . .which generally performed pretty admirably for most of the afternoon. . .was again overextended, staying on the field for 38:30 of the game's sixty minutes. That's a minute longer than they were on the field for against Chicago. No team can afford to do that, particularly a team like the Vikings that relies so much on the running game and long, sustained drives.

The thing that just boggles the mind about Ponder's performance is this. . .never mind how awful the Vikings' receivers are or the play calling or anything like that. If you have a running back that's averaging ten yards per carry. . .yes, a first down every damn time he catches the ball. . .and that defenses are committing extra defenders to stop on pretty much every down and distance, how are you not absolutely destroying people through the air? How are there not guys running wide open and free on every play, and how are those people not being found? You would think that this pass offense would be getting better over the course of the season. . .but instead it seems to have gotten worse.

Now, I still don't think Joe Webb is the answer, either. But, at this point, I'm not sure if it can get worse. I really don't. I don't know if the Vikings would have been better served to keep a veteran like Sage Rosenfels on the team to talk with Ponder about stuff or what it is, but if this is the best we're going to get out of Christian Ponder. . .then it might be time to just cut bait.

It kills me to say that. . .really, it does. I wanted Ponder to be the guy that the Vikings developed for the long term and carried this team for a decade or more at the quarterback position after years of stop-gaps and temporary solutions. Part of me still wants it to happen. But, at this point, I'm just not sure it's going to be the case. But the Minnesota Vikings' pass offense needs to get better. . .not just for the remainder of this season, but going forward into 2013 as well. Is it going to get better under the continued direction of Christian Ponder? I'm really starting to think that it won't.

This 2012 season was supposed to be about the development of Christian Ponder, and it would be one thing if we actually knew what we had going forward. But, to this point, we have a team that's gone 6-6 under Ponder's direction. . .and, in many cases, it's been as much in spite of Ponder as it has been because of him. I don't think that he's going to get benched any time soon. . .Leslie Frazier just indicated as much in his post-game press conference. . .and if that's the case, the Vikings have a good chance of going into 2013 the same way they went into 2012. . .with questions about the quarterback position.

The rest of this team is good enough to win. . .they've proven that over the course of this season. If Christian Ponder doesn't somehow show some marked improvement over the season's final four games, the rest of the team will be going forward with a new leader.

It was a crazy third quarter at Lambeau Field, to say the least. But as we move to the fourth quarter of play, the Minnesota Vikings now trail the Green Bay Packers by a score of 20-14.

The quarter started with Mason Crosby kicking the ball out of bounds to give Minnesota the ball at the 40-yard line, and a long run by Adrian Peterson gave the Vikings the ball deep in Green Bay territory. Unfortunately, Christian Ponder rolled to his right on second-and-8 and looked for Michael Jenkins in the end zone. However, the ball wound up in the hands of Morgan Burnett for an interception, and the threat was squelched.

The Packers turned that into a 47-yard field goal by Mason Crosby to make the score 14-13. On Green Bay's next protection, Aaron Rodgers was intercepted by Harrison Smith on what can charitably be called an ugly flea-flicker pass. The Vikings couldn't take advantage, however, and the Packers started near midfield.

Four plays later, James Starks went into the end zone from 22 yards out for a Green Bay touchdown to make the score 20-14. It was just the Packers' third rushing touchdown of the season.

After a huge penalty on the Packers put the Vikings deep in Green Bay territory again, Christian Ponder threw another interception to Burnett on the final play of the third quarter to end another scoring threat.

I think I'm just about off the Christian Ponder train. This is unacceptable. Adrian Peterson has 210 rushing yards, and. . .ugh, I can't even talk about it.

Fifteen minutes of football left at Lambeau Field, and the Vikings are down by six points. Can they come back and get the win? Let's find out.

Going into the locker room at halftime at Lambeau Field, the Minnesota Vikings lead the Green Bay Packers by a score of 14-10.

No, that's not a misprint or anything.

The Vikings pretty much owned the second quarter of this one after getting dominated in the first stanza. The Vikings got on the board with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Christian Ponder to Kyle Rudolph. It was a pretty nice throw by Ponder, who went 5-for-5 on that drive, with four of the completions going to Rudolph. That score made it 10-7 in favor of the Packers.

The Vikings took the lead over Green Bay for the first time in. . .well, a long damn time. . .thanks to the National Football League's best running back. On a 3rd-and-1 play for Minnesota, Adrian Peterson took a handoff around the right side of the formation and, thanks to some awful tackling by Green Bay, wound up flying down the right sideline for an 82-yard touchdown run to make the score 14-10 in favor of Minnesota.

Peterson currently has 126 yards on 13 carries to go with his touchdown. This is his sixth straight game of 100 yards rushing or more, giving him the franchise record in that category. He entered this game sharing that record with Robert Smith.

So, things haven't been a complete disaster thus far for the Vikings, which is a lot more than most of us expected, I think. Can the Vikings keep it up going forward? Well, there's only one way to find out.

The Minnesota Vikings haven't gotten a whole lot going on offense, and they can't seem to stay onside on defense after fifteen minutes against the Green Bay Packers. Other than that, things are going fine.

The Vikings won the opening coin toss and deferred to the second half, giving the Packers the ball first. Aided by a couple of offside penalties, the Packers found the end zone on a 32-yard touchdown pass to James Jones. A.J. Jefferson had pretty good coverage on Jones on the play, but Jones just outjumped him for the ball.

After a three-and-out for Minnesota, the Packers mounted another scoring drive, this one ending with a 30-yard field goal that Mason Crosby banked in off of the left upright to give the Packers a 10-0 lead.

Adrian Peterson got it going for the Vikings on the second possession, and went over the 8,000 career yard mark for his career. Only four players in NFL history have reached that mark in fewer games than the 85 it took Peterson to get there. A couple of nice completions to Kyle Rudolph and Jerome Felton have the Vikings moving, and they're into Green Bay territory at the 24-yard line, looking at 2nd-and-7.

Oh, and the troll that finally found the site after 13 weeks? He's been flushed. DISCOUNT DOUBLE FILTH, YEAH!!

Anyway, the second quarter is here. . .join us, won't you?

Once again, the ground rules for the Game Threads:

-Thou shalt not promote illegal feeds of today's game, or I shall kick thy arse to the curb until the game is over. Thou hast been warned.

-Thou shalt make an attempt to keep the swearing to a minimum. Understandable that it will slip occasionally, but do try to limit it.

-Thou shalt not feed the trolls. Rather, thou shall simply point them out, and they shall be banished to the fires of Mordor. Or Wisconsin. Whichever we feel is more harsh at the time.

-Thou shalt not engage in racist, sexist, or other such insulting rhetoric. Somebody disagreeing with you does not make them racist or sexist. It means they disagree with you. Talk it out like adults.

-Thou shalt not bait the fans of other teams into trolling.

-Basically, thou shalt not be a jackwagon in the game thread.

As you can see from my score prediction, I'm not terribly optimistic about this afternoon's contest. My score prediction might be significantly closer than the final score actually winds up being.

Whether or not the Vikings can manage to get any sort of passing attack going today will be the key. Adrian Peterson's going to get his, as he looks to go over 100 yards for the sixth consecutive game (which would set the franchise record that he currently shares with Robert Smith). We know that Adrian Peterson is going to get his. But the Vikings need to get something done through the air today to have a shot in this one.

The Packers are missing a lot of key components, including Charles Woodson and Clay Matthews, which helps the Vikings' cause. However, the Vikings are again without Percy Harvin, which definitely does not help theirs.

Hopefully the Vikings will put up a decent showing this afternoon, and possibly pull off the upset. Hopefully you'll all be here for this afternoon's festivities.

SKOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL VIKINGS!!!!

No huge surprises on the list for the Vikings. It would have been hard for the team to dress Harvin after he didn't even make the trip to Green Bay, so there he is on the inactive list.

Now for the hosts, the Green Bay Packers.

As previously mentioned, the Packers are missing a lot of key components, and almost all of them are on the defensive side of the ball. Whether or not the Vikings' offense can take advantage of that remains to be seen.

There are your inactive lists for both teams leading up to this afternoon's match-up, ladies and gentlemen. The Game Thread will be up in about 20 minutes.

If you're viewing this game via the DirecTV Sunday Ticket package, the game will be on Channel 705.

Radio Info: If you don't have access to a television, you know the drill. . .find the Vikings Radio Network affiliate in your area. For those of you with satellite radio, on the XM side you're stuck with the Packers feed on Channel 229. If you have Sirius, you can find the Vikings' feed on Channel 106, and the Packers feed (though I don't know why you'd want it) on Channel 86.

Weather Info: Things are going to be downright seasonable in Green Bay for this one, with temperatures at game time sitting in the mid 40s and winds coming out of the west at 8 to 10 miles an hour.

And that pretty much does it for all the relevant game day info. The inactive lists will be up about an hour and a half before game time, and the first quarter Game Thread will be up about an hour before kickoff.
