We've finally gotten to see some real football for the 2013 NFL season, as the Minnesota Vikings took on the Houston Texans at the Metrodome on Friday, August 9, 2013.

The scoreboard at the end of the game showed the Texans defeating the Vikings by a score of 27-13, but we all know that the scores aren't really relevant in the pre-season. . .it's more about getting players ready to play in the regular season. As you'd expect, we saw some players from both teams that looked like they were ready to go, some that could use a little more work. . .and, quite frankly, some guys that are probably going to be selling insurance here in a few weeks.

But, we have plenty of great pictures of the game available for your viewing pleasure. You can scroll through them below. We hope you enjoy them. . .hopefully we'll be doing this for every game the Minnesota Vikings play in 2013. (And we'll effort for less of a delay between the end of the game and the posting of the pictures, too.)

So, the first pre-season game of the year is in the books, and there's a few things to discuss. Ted already has the Stock Market Report up, and I'm sure that Arif will be in with some significantly more detailed takes from his perspective in the press box (which was awesome) later on, but these are my thoughts from the first game of the year.

I'd like to point out that I was attempting to do these during the game, but we had a power outage over here in the early part of the fourth quarter, and I've been in the dark. . .literally and figuratively. . .since then. I'll have to go back and watch the last part of the game later.

-It's hard not to be impressed with what Cordarrelle Patterson did in his first game on an NFL field. The 50-yard kick return to start the game was quite nice, and he also added four catches for 54 yards. A lot of those were against backups, sure, but he showed a lot more polish as a receiver than I think a lot of folks expected. Once he develops something with Christian Ponder, I think he's going to be just fine.

-Speaking of Ponder. . .yes, he threw an interception on his second pre-season pass, after throwing a nice completion on his first one. It wasn't a perfect pass by Ponder, certainly, but it was a catchable ball for Jerome Simpson. If you're scoring at home, Jay Cutler threw an interception on his first pre-season attempt. . .not that it has any bearing on Ponder or the Vikings. I'm just saying is all.

-I also understand that it's not going to stop the Ridiculous Internet Overreaction™ about the play, but that's my take on it.

-Not sure about the decision to pull Ponder after two plays. I get only wanting to play him for one series, but you would have to think that series would be more than two plays. I thought he should have gotten the second drive as well, but hey. . .I'm not Leslie Frazier, what the heck do I know?

-Nice job by Zach Line on his touchdown reception. As PA pointed out numerous times on the broadcast, he had more all-purpose yards at SMU than Eric Dickerson (but not Craig James), so he has some ability with the football. Will it be enough for him to make the team? We'll have to see.

-Matt Cassel's interception was a bit on the ugly side, to be certain. I'll have to go back and see if Cassel's arm was hit as he threw, but the pass was thrown in such a manner that John Carlson had no shot at it). Cassel looked alright other than that. . .probably not as good as his numbers (12/19 for 212 yards) would indicate.

-Bobby Felder had an up-and-down night, giving up the Texans' first touchdown to DeAndre Hopkins on a play where he actually had pretty solid coverage. He also made a couple of nice plays in goal-line defense in the third quarter that forced the Texans to settle for a tying field goal. Then he got caught in no man's land on the Texans' second touchdown.

-It's going to sound like a cliche, but Michael Mauti just looks like an NFL middle linebacker. As we've said before, if the guy stays healthy, he was an absolute steal where the Vikings got him.

-Sharrif Floyd had a decent night with a tackle for loss and a batted pass (somehow, what with those short arms), before leaving with a knee issue. He's not going to miss any practice time, according to the reports, so his being held out the rest of the game was strictly precautionary.

-Stephen Burton made a pretty solid case to make the team as a receiver, as he had a huge catch-and-run from Matt Cassel to set up the Vikings' first score. I'm not sure how many receivers the Vikings are going to have on the final roster, whether it's going to be five or six. You have to think Greg Jennings, Jarius Wright, Cordarrelle Patterson, and Jerome Simpson are locks, which is going to leave guys like Burton, Joe Webb, and others fighting for one or two spots (to say nothing of what potentially happens if the team wants to activate Greg Childs at some point).

-I'm happy to report that when James Vandenberg came into the game and everyone was making the easy Varsity Blues references, I was making Dawson's Creek jokes. That was about the time the power went out. Maybe that's a sign. Or the powers that be just didn't want me to watch James Vandenberg, I don't know.

That's about everything I've got at the present time, folks. I'm sure there will be more to talk about over the next couple of days.

The Minnesota Vikings kicked off their final season in the Metrodome against the Houston Texans on Friday night. No, I don't care that the Vikings lost 27 - 13, thanks for asking.

Ahhhhhhhhhh, it's good to have football back, isn't it?

Yes, it was only the first pre-season game, and yes, it got sloppy when the third and fourth string guys were in, but football is back, and it was good to be able to watch it, even if it was on an Internet feed that was choppy and somewhat pixelated at times.

Either way, welcome back:

Welcome back,
Your dreams were your ticket out.

Welcome back,
To that same old place that you laughed about.

Well the names have all changed since you hung around,
But those dreams have remained and they're turned around.

Who'd have thought they'd lead ya (Who'd have thought they'd lead ya)
Here where we need ya (Here where we need ya)

Yeah we tease him a lot cause we've hot him on the spot, welcome back,
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back.

Your Texans SMR follows.

Blue Chip Stocks:

The First Rounders: Xavier Rhodes was held out as a precaution because he tweaked a hamstring earlier in the week, but Shariff Floyd and Cordarelle Patterson more than made up for it. They both look like the real deal, and Patterson seemed to be a much more polished pass catcher than scouting reports and stories from camp lead me to believe. His opening kickoff return was electric, and he flashed some serious playmaking potential. It's way too early to start chirping 'Percy Who?', but Patterson looks to be the real deal.

Michael Mauti: It was hard to watch most of the fourth quarter, but the only guy that really stood out consistently on the Vikings defense was Mauti. He made some solid plays, and looks like a textbook Mike linebacker. Because of the camera angles and terrible Internet picture, I never was able to spot him in pass coverage, but this kid looks like the real deal, too. His tackle on the goal line of Dennis Johnson was textbook, as he stood the runner up and stopped him cold, then drove him backwards for no gain. LOVED that play. Loved. It.

Special Teams: Blair Walsh was money. P Jeff Locke pinned the Texans inside their 10 twice, and boomed his other punts. Cordarelle Patterson had a great kickoff return, and the coverage units looked good. If this kind of play is to be the norm, special teams will win a game or two for the Vikings in 2013.

The New Uniforms: I love the new uniforms. Love. Them.

Solid Investments:

The Quarterback Situation: This is not a defense of Christian Ponder, nor is it a demand to start Matt Cassel. This is, however, a big thumbs up to the Vikings quarterback depth compared to this time last year. If Ponder falters, I think the Vikings will be in capable hands with Matt Cassel. I'm not saying that either of these guys will light up the NFL, but I am saying that we probably won't see games of under 100 passing yards again. In retrospect, it seems apparent that the Vikings didn't play Webb when Ponder slumped last year because they knew he would do what he did in the playoffs. I am confident that if Ponder falters in 2013, the Vikings won't hesitate to pull him for Cassel. As they should. But I hope they won't have to.

Stephen Burton, WR: Burton's spin and run that turned into a 65 yard reception on 3rd and 15 was a big time move, and something he hasn't really flashed a lot in his time in Minnesota. With so few spots open, things like that could be the difference in whether or not a guy makes a roster or doesn't.

Gerald Hodges, LB: Hodges made some plays on defense with the third team, but he wasn't as consistent as Mauti seemed to be. Still, I thought overall it was a nice evening for him.

Zack Line, RB: That 61 yard TD reception was almost all individual effort the last 10 or 15 yards, because you can't stop Zack Line, YOU CAN ONLY HOPE TO CONTAIN HIM. Is he the 2013 Audie Cole? Time will only tell, but plays like that only help a guy.

Junk Bonds:

Travis Bond, G: He got owned on the Vikings first FG drive, three times by my count. Man, not very good.

DeMarcus Love, T: Speaking of putting your name out there but not in a good way, it's been a rough 2013 for Love so far. First came the announcement that he was being suspended four games for PED use, and then he had a holding penalty that cost the Vikings a decent gain in the second half. It's like he's trying to get cut.

James Vandenberg, QB: In 2009, as a freshman at the University of Iowa, Vandenberg made his first start against Ohio State, in Columbus, with the Big Ten title on the line. He damn near pulled off the upset with one hell of a game, and I thought he was going to be an NFL quarterback someday. He is not, in fact, going to be an NFL quarterback. I was wrong.

Buy/Sell:

Buy: Bobby Felder's goal line pass defense. In the third quarter, Felder had two straight pass break ups down on the goal line, and it forced the Texans to kick a field goal.

Sell: Bobby Felder's pass defense the rest of the game. He gave up a TD to DeAndre Hopkins on a pass he was in position to break up, and on said field goal drive, he was primarily responsible for the Texans getting into a first and goal situation.

Buy: Bradley Randle. Although Line had the big TD catch, Randle played well, and had an all around better game. He ran with confidence, and looked better in blitz pickup than Adrian Peterson ever has. Just sayin'...

Sell: The sloppy play in the second half. The good news is that the Vikings seem to have decent depth two deep at most positions. The bad news is that other than Mauti and Hodges, the three deep sucks balls. WOO WAIVER WIRE!!

Buy: Matt Cassel's play. Overall, a good job. His numbers were 12/19, 212 yards, 1/1, and he made some very nice throws, both downfield and checking down.

Sell: The Interceptions. Can't have 'em. The Vikings were very good at not turning the ball over last season, and if the Vikes are going to make another playoff run they'll need to win the turnover battle, plain and simple.

Don Glover Quote Of The Week:

Me: Dad, you want to come over and watch the game on my computer?

Dad: Oh, God no. My eyesight is terrible. I'd probably get a headache while going blind watching future insurance salesmen on your damn computer screen. I'll watch it Sunday.

You see my friends, Don Glover has no use for 'computers', 'the Internet', and 'Live streaming', thank you very much. He will watch the game on Sunday afternoon at my house when he comes over for dinner, after I DVR it Saturday night.

Overall, I can't say I was disappointed in what I saw from the first and second string guys, regardless of the final score. Both Cassel and Ponder threw a pick, and fairly bad ones at that, and that stuff needs to be cleaned up, and we didn't see a lot of regulars, like Adrian Peterson and Jared Allen, but for the most part, the rookie class played very well.

There's a lot to build on, but a lot of positives to take away from this game. The most important one being is that no one got seriously hurt, and we move onward an upward for next week.

SKOL, and welcome back, football.

Well, since the first half thread is over 700 comments, let's move to a new thread for the second half.

The highlights of the early going for the Vikings were a 50-yard kick return by Cordarrelle Patterson to start the game, after which Christian Ponder threw two passes to Jerome Simpson. One went for a 15-yard reception, the other went off of Simpson's hands and to a Houston defender for an interception. Ponder was pulled after that. . .yeah, I don't understand, either. . .and Matt Cassel took over.

The Vikings' first touchdown of 2013 was scored by. . .Zach Line? Yes, Zach Line, on a 61-yard pass from Cassel that saw Line break numerous tackles en route to the end zone. Line is one of those fringe type of players, so that's something that can only work in his favor, I would think.

The Texans responded with a 34-yard touchdown pass from T.J. Yates to rookie DeAndre Hopkins. Bobby Felder actually had pretty decent coverage on the play, but really mistimed his jump and allowed the rookie to come down with it.

Blair Walsh added his second field goal to give the Vikings a 13-10 lead, and a long attempt to end the half by the Texans fell short, so that's where we stand after 30 minutes of action.

We'll have more on the game after it's completed, but that's where we stand right now.

Enjoy the second half, everybody! And, since I forgot it initially, here's Arif's Twitter feed from the Metrodome press box.

Just like last year, here are the ground rules for the Game Threads:

-Thou shalt not promote illegal feeds of today's game, or I shall kick thy arse to the curb until the game is over. Thou hast been warned.

-Thou shalt make an attempt to keep the swearing to a minimum. Understandable that it will slip occasionally, but do try to limit it. (And, really, it's pre-season, folks.)

-Thou shalt not feed the trolls. Rather, thou shall simply point them out, and they shall be banished to the fires of Mordor. Or Wisconsin. Whichever we feel is more harsh at the time.

-Thou shalt not engage in racist, sexist, or other such insulting rhetoric. Somebody disagreeing with you does not make them racist or sexist. It means they disagree with you. Talk it out like adults.

-Thou shalt not bait the fans of other teams into trolling.

-Basically, thou shalt not be a jackwagon in the game thread.

SWEET MOTHER OF WALTER CAMP, IT'S TIME FOR FOOTBALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!

Yes, even though most of this game will be played by guys that are going to be selling insurance or something in just a few weeks, it's football. And, more importantly, it's Minnesota Vikings football. It doesn't get a whole lot better than that.

We'll see whether we need new Open Threads for each quarter, each half, or whatever. It's all going to depend on the amount of traffic we get here.

So, what am I looking for tonight?

1) No injuries - The Vikings have quite a few guys that aren't going to be playing tonight. Don't expect to see Adrian Peterson, Jared Allen, Greg Jennings, Xavier Rhodes, Desmond Bishop, and some other guys out there tonight. The biggest thing is to just come away from this game with no significant injuries.

2) The passing game - This is the thing I think all Vikings fans are waiting to see. Will Christian Ponder and company put together a good enough passing game to complement one of football's best rushing attacks? I don't know how much of an answer to that we're going to get tonight, but it might be a start at the very least. The Texans' secondary is very, very good. We'll see what our favorite football team can generate against them through the air.

3) The bottom of the depth chart - The first cutdown date across the National Football League isn't until August 27, after the third pre-season game (when teams have to drop their rosters from 90 to 75), but the process will start tonight. Who will be the Vikings' fifth (and/or sixth) receivers? Who will be the backups on the offensive line? How about the defensive line battles? Which undrafted free agents have the best chance of sticking with the team? We'll start getting answers to those questions tonight, too.

We're about an hour away from kickoff here, ladies and gentlemen. Grab your beverage of choice and hang out with us. Here's the feed from Arif, who is up in the press box at the Metrodome.

The old saying goes that you can't tell who's who without a program. But, for those of us that are going to be watching tonight's pre-season opener on television and don't readily have access to a program, we need a way to recognize who the guys on the field from about the second quarter or so onward are.

Have no fear, because we have you covered. Here's the full roster for the Minnesota Vikings going into this evening's tilt with the Houston Texans, sorted in numerical order. Greg Childs is not listed, as he is on the Physically Unable to Perform List at the present time.

Enjoy, folks! We're a little more than two hours away from kickoff.

In just about 24 hours, the Minnesota Vikings and Houston Texans will be kicking off their pre-season opener at the Metrodome. As is our wont, we've exchanged questions with our friends at SB Nation's site for all things Texans, Battle Red Blog, and here are their answers to the questions I sent their way. (Once they post the questions I answered for them, I'll update this post with the link.)

1) These two teams saw each other down at Reliant Stadium last December, towards the end of the 2012 regular season. What are the biggest changes that Vikings fans will notice about the Houston Texans when they come to town tomorrow?

The biggest change would probably be their health. J.J. Watt is 100% after finally letting his elbow heal, Brian Cushing is 100% after his ACL tear in week 5 of last season, Brooks Reed is 100% after his groin strain last Thanksgiving, and Jonathan Joseph is 100% after two sports hernias and a hamstring strain in 2012. The four most important pieces on this defense are finally back and ready to hit people, and I expect the Bulls on Parade to remind people this year why the Texans defense was ranked so highly in 2011. While the starters might not even play a full quarter, seeing our boys test themselves against the likes of John Sullivan, Matt Kalil, Kyle Rudolph, and Adrian Peterson should be a treat. What happens when an unstoppable force meets and immovable object? Good television, that's what.

2) Houston's first pick, Clemson wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, is someone that a lot of Vikings fans (myself included) were high on going into the 2013 draft. What's the buzz about him in this year's camp? Is he the guy that can complement Andre Johnson?

Texans fans were pretty much resigned to the fact that Hopkins (and Arthur Brown) would not make it to us at 27 prior to the draft, so seeing him in a Texans uniform is a dream come true. I still don't know how we got him, but he has easily been the most impressive rookie in training camp thus far. Twitter is littered with reports of Hopkins destroying our defensive backs in every drill, and considering that Johnathan Joseph and Kareem Jackson are arguably the best corner tandem in the NFL that is quite a feat. Many BRB faithful got to see Hopkins with their own eyes during open practices, and by all accounts he was just as amazing in person while catching everything thrown his way. Expectations literally could not be higher, and I really can't wait to see him and Harrison Smith (who I would like to add got robbed for DROY) square off twenty yards down field.

3) The Vikings have had their issues at quarterback, to say the least. Oddly enough, there appears to be a bit of grumbling from some of the Texans' faithful about their quarterback, Matt Schaub. From an outsider's point of view, it appears that Schaub has been a pretty solid quarterback. In my best Seinfeld voice, I have to ask. . .what is the deal with Matt Schaub?

It really depends on who you ask. There is a perception in a lot of fan bases that elite quarterbacks are easy to find. They aren't. We tried. We got David Carr. Matt Schaub is the upper middle class three bedroom house of quarterbacks. Is he a penthouse in the city with a rooftop pool? Nope. Is he enough to keep us happy while our ritzy beach mansions (Watt, Foster, Cushing, Johnson, etc) win us a Super Bowl? Definitely. The bottom line is that there are a lot of teams out there that I'm sure would take Matt Schaub over what they have in a heart beat (I'm sure some of your own readers would take that deal as well). He's not Drew Brees, but he doesn't need to be. All Schaub has to do is execute a play action fake and hit a wide open Andre Johnson for enough 20 yard gains until Kubiak starts feeding Foster in the red zone. He does those things just fine, so I'll take it.

4) Give us a guy that's under the radar on the Texans' roster that Vikings fans should keep an eye on in the pre-season opener?

Brandon Brooks at right guard. He got taken in the third round in 2012 despite not even getting a combine invite because of his physical freakishness (A sub 5.00 forty at 346 lbs on top of 36 on the bench) and had a lot of development to do before getting on the field. When Brooks finally did drop the weight and earn some snaps he was simply phenomenal, and going in to camp at an even lighter 325 lbs a lot of fans wanted to see what he could do as a starter. All accounts from practice has Brooks trading wins and losses with J.J. Watt, even frustrating Watt to the point of shouting obscenities after reps. If he can anger J.J., then he must be doing something right. I am eager to see if he gets any snaps against Kevin Williams, who is as good a barometer as you're ever going to get from the defensive tackle position.

5) Is J.J. Watt actually human. . .or is he, like Adrian Peterson, some sort of alien life form/cyborg?

I hope he isn't, because if he is actually a man then I suddenly feel a lot worse about myself. How can you be that talented, physically gifted, humble, and nice at the same time? It's just not fair, man.

Thanks to Brett Kollman from BRB for taking the time to answer these questions.
